Ron has great tempo and timing and I've read that his results are excellent! He's truly swinging naturally, and not hitting. I'd like to eventually obtain his level of fluidness and tempo in the future. However, I'd prefer to swing through with a little push from my back knee and leg during the downswing. If you look closely, it appears that Don locks his right knee and stiffens his right leg. And it's almost as though it's pulled through passively. Am I seeing things correctly? Would this be an issue if hitting from thicker grass where you'd need more power? Perhaps not, I don't know.

To answer your question, I believe that his teachings and methods seem effective in that he obtains great results using a tension free and fluid swing.

Regards,

Mark

I have heard some say that with his method you will experience a loss of power and distance. I just for the life of me can't seem to understand that kind of thinking. I have very little rotation, but because of my size I am able to consistantly poke it out there 280-290 yards with little or no effort and with a shoulder turn that never gets past my chin. Sure I am told that with a bigger turn and wider arc I could gain 30-40 yards, but why. I am setting myself up for a swing that I can one day walk onto a course for a Monday qualifier and excute it just as I would any other day. Sure I play with guys that would blow it past Tiger, but most of the time there swing never holds up the entire 3-4 days. So while I'm carding scores in the 60's, all they really have to talk about is there 76 and the (1) downhill par 4 that they drove, and (3) putted.......

His swing sure looks smooth, but dang does he ever 'peek'. It's almost as though the first thing he does is turn his head to look at his target, which almost always spells disaster for me.

I thought the same thing at first. He explains it

here.

I have taken lessons from Ron and played golf with him a couple of times. He has more than enough power. I couldn't question his ability to generate club head speed when he hit my 6 iron 205, right over the pin on a par-3.

Much like Couples or Els, his swing appears very smooth and easy, but the mechanics are near perfect. The timing between the core rotation and release of the hands causes his club to "unload" at the perfect time in the arc. I have stood and watched him hit balls at the range and can hear and see the phenomenal acceleration through impact. It looks effortless and easy to do, but it takes a lot of work to get there. Ron's swing is all about timing. He wants the head and body to flow through the hitting zone and doesn't want the head staying back to be restrictive.

I, on the other hand, take the approach where I believe that it's important for the head to stay back as a way of an anchoring point for the upper body. If you keep the head back, the upper torso and shoulders will rotate through better when lead by the hips.

Have you seen an improvement in your game using his methods. I go to the range everyday and can vouch for his swing fundamentals.

I got my handicap down to a 6.4 with a lot of bad habits, so it is taking a while to undo those things. I have improved my swing considerably working with Ron. The improvements come in small increments at first, but the more I "get" the easier subsequent changes become.

I still struggle with keeping my arms, especially the right arm and hand, relaxed, and using the core rotation to generate the power. SubPar

I think the video had some issues the first day. It worked - didn't work - then worked again.

Anyway, the kid's got talent!

I came across his site somehow this morning and I have watched every single video! Wow, this guy makes a lot of sense, I can't wait to try some things he advocates. He has wonderful presentation skills, as well.

He really is a great instructor. It is strange to play with him and see how effortless his swing is. He gets a lot of distance and spin with a swing that seems too relaxed to produce the result you are seeing.

Perhaps the most unusual yet effective thing he promotes is the idea of simply dropping the club with relaxed arms and grip pressure, allowing the body rotation to generate the speed. He often says if he could get people to feel how relaxed his arms are during the swing they wouldn't believe it. That technique combined with good mechanics and ball striking is what I am looking for. I can get the relaxed arm thing, but the timing and ball striking are still not there for me. SubPar

Does he take his eye off the ball and look at the target before impact? Looks like it.

I tried his techniques a little last year and had pretty good success until I got down to my 5-iron. I even went so far as to email Ron about it and he offered to give me a free lesson if I was ever in the area. But I decided to stick with the "traditional" swing, mostly because Ron's doesn't have much of a track record (as far as I could find.)

His head starts early. He does not teach the head move much unless someone needs it or wants to learn it. I have a problem keeping my shoulders rotating at impact. When I do a little of this head rotation it takes my eyes off the ball and I hit better shots because my shoulders follow my head.

Not sure what track record you are looking for, but if you are talking about the head rotation, Annika Sörenstam and David Duval offer a pretty good testimony for that. There are dozens of pros who turn their heads to varying degrees, but you have to watch their swings in slow-mo to see it.

Ochoa is the queen of head turn. She said she developed it at a young age trying to keep her head behind the ball. Watch one of her driver sequences. Looks like she got hit with a left hook during the downswing.
