When I watch golf on TV, I want to see players playing the game.

I do not want to see "human interest" recordings about where a player lives, his children, his hobbies, etc.

I do not want to see replays from past tournaments. I do want to see replays of great shots of that day in that tournament.

I do not want to see commentators sitting in a studio talking to each other.

I do not want to see interviews on or off the course while players are still playing.

I want reasonably even coverage of all players on or near the leader board.

I do not want taped "lessons", taped "rules education", or any other filler in lieu of live coverage.

I do not want history lessons on who designed the course, what changes have been made, etc.

I do want to see a leader board about once every 5 minutes.

I like to see replays of a player's swing after he or she hits a particularly good or bad shot.

I like to see the hole layout, hear what the wind is doing and guesses about what club a player has selected.

Criticism of players (their shots, shot decisions, etc.) should be made only by commentators who have won on Tour, like Johnny Miller; who cares what a broadcast journalist hack's opinion is of something he has never done and never will do?

Can you imagine a Baseball, Basketball, or Football game where over half the TV coverage wasn't of the game?

I couldnt agree more. Golf Channel coverage sucks. 50% is something other than them showing golf in my estimation. And near then end of coverage, in the last 45 min or so. Forget it. You might as well turn it off.

You can do interviews and still show golf.

Please dont show me the commentators, the beginning and end of coverage are the exceptions.

Try to show as many players and different holes as possible.

You can tell me about a player, but you can do it while he is hitting. You dont need to stay on him for 5 min while he is walking to his next shot.

Ok the rules are important but I would rather see someone hitting a shot than 5-10 minutes of a player discussing his options with an official, exception is the leaders on Sunday, when there is more on the line than on Thursday.

I agree on some of your gripes especially even coverage. Heck, if Tigers even in the tourny his group is about all you see. However, some of the other add ons I find entertaining. I don't like it sometimes when they just focus on people putting but dont show enough tee or approach shots.

I could not disagree more. I find their stories, backgrounds, and history very informative. If I wanna see birdies and pars all day then I'll go play (18).... But, I guess on the flip side it has been probably 2 years since I have actually watched a golf tourney.

you better not watch the US Olympic coverage then... 45 minutes of stories, 3 minutes of events.

I sort of like that stuff, just in moderation.

yeah... I like to have a little bit of that stuff, just don't interupt the flow of the tourney. Plus, most GC coverage is on Thursday and Friday when this stuff is appropriate.

Get a DVR it eliminates hours of fluff leaving pure golf. And turn the sound off the graphics tell you all you need to know.

Or watch the European tour coverage.

European Tour coverage is excellent - sometimes it pains me to switch on PGA Tour coverage....there's only so much you can put up with. At least at Augusta there will be no ad's.

My favourite tournaments all year are on BBC - British Open is the best piece of golf tv you'll see. No ad's. Indepth commentary. You see everyone. EVERYONE! If Tiger is in contention, you see as much of him as you do anyone else in contention. If he's not in contention - they show the odd shot, but they don't show him walking down the fairway when Harrington is making eagle to jump into the lead!

    • This is a loooooong winded narrative so if you don't like long stories, move on. 😉 Our senior club typically gets about 25 new members each year. We lose about 25 members each year for various reasons (moved to FL/AZ, disabled, dead, too expensive). Of the new members, usually 20 have an active GHIN handicap. About 5 each year do not have a GHIN handicap. When they join our club, we give each member a state association membership that includes GHIN handicapping services. We play a series of handicapped tournaments over the summer. When we sign up a new member who does not have a GHIN handicap, we attempt to give them an estimated index until they have sufficient scores posted to have an actual GHIN index.  Our first event typically is around May 15 so, in theory, a new member has about 6 weeks to post a few scores. Posting season in the Mitten starts April 1. Inevitably, several of the unhandicapped individuals seem  to either not play until the first tournament or can't figure out how to enter scores (hey, they are seniors). That situation then leads to my contacting the new member and asking a series of questions: a. Did you ever have a GHIN handicap? If yes, which State and do you recall what it was? b. Do you have an alternate handicap through a non-GHIN handicap service or a league? c. What do you think your average score was last year (for 9 or 18) d. What was your best score last year? Where did you play and which tee was used? e. What do you consider a very good score for yourself? Based on their responses I attempt to give them an index that makes them competitive in the first couple events BUT does not allow them to win their flight in the first couple events. We don't want the new members to finish last and at the same time, we don't want someone with a "20" playing handicap to win the third flight with a net 57. In the event some new member did shoot a net 57, we also advise everyone that we can and will adjust handicaps retroactively when it is clear to us that a member's handicap does not accurately reflect their potential. We don't like to adjust things retroactively and in the 8 years I have chaired the Handicap Committee, we have only done it once. So here are the questions to the mob: Any ideas how to do this better? Any questions one might ask an unhandicapped individual to better estimate their index/handicap? Would it be reasonable to have a new player play once (or more?) without being eligible to place in the money?
