I am currently using a 50* PW and 55* SW that came with my set, 2004 Callaway Big Bertha irons. I get around fine with these wedges, but they are rather large and clunky as they were included in a max game improvement set. I've started to wonder whether I would see benefits by going to better wedges such as the Callaway x-tour wedges.

I am just not sure if the possible benefits are worth spending the extra dollars. Any opinions here?

I bought 2 xtour wedges (the Phil Mickelson wedges) 52d and 58d on ebay for a total of about $125. I dumped my old 60d Titleist Wedge and 60d custom sandwedge.

My PW is 47d.. 50d seems kinda high for a PW?

I was a 10 hdcp shooting about 84-86 on average (136 slope course). After I got my 2 new wedges I play to about 82-84 and lowered my hdcp to an 8.

The 58 plays very well out of the sand and the turf.

I get so much more control with the 52 (consistenly 80-100) and the 58 (10-60 yds). I had struggled with the 90-100 yard range.. these new Mack Daddy (MD) grooves give so much more control.

It's totally worth the price.. and again on ebay you can find them for under $70 each.. and sometimes sold in sets.

Get a 58, and prob a 54, since your PW is 50... otherwise dump you PW and get the 58,54 and 50.

good luck!

I think the benefit of better wedges is the bounce of the club.. There are soo many bounces options nowadays anybody can find the wedge that suits how they react with the turf

"People think the size of the head is most important. Wrong. It's getting a quality shaft. test different shafts to see which goes the straightest. Also, more degrees of loft on the head is better than less. Eleven degrees is about right."

Its just as you said, better wedges are less clunky and are specifically desiged just to do what they do, unlike your callaway set which has all sorts of extra stuff built into them. They are usally forged, with makes them have softer feel and better control.

THE WEAPONS CACHE..

I love my wedges... I've replaced my PW and SW that came with my set... so ive got a 47*, 53*, 56*, 60*. Im thinking about putting in a 50 as well to close that 47 to 53 gap... I do have a spot for one more club...

But then again i love buying clubs... Its sorta like a hobby... actually getting out and playing is just what i do when im not looking at new clubs... Just Kidding... well sorta...

But IMO buying wedges is money well spent... especially how cheap used ones are... I got my 53 for 9.99 at the local golf shop... and it looks brand new except for a scratch on the back.

It is a confidence boost......seeing as how golf is 90% mental, good wedges(even bad wedges that you thought were good) could make a difference.
