I have always felt uncomfortable with a ball in front of me when I get to the top of the swing. It triggers a hitting impulse causing fat or thin shots. Something I can't quite overcome even after three years of trying.

Practice swings are smooth and fluid just don't put a ball in front of me.

Any suggestions other than leaving clubs in the closet ?

Go play (3) rounds of invisible tee golf. Put only a tee in the ground and swing, then visualize where the ball went. Then proceed to your next shot and so on. You will soon realize that the ball is merely an object that gets in the way of your swing....

Yeah, the only thing that would get in the way of my swing would be the straight jacket by about the 5th hole. Oh well, at least I would have birdied every hole to that point...

Well played. Nicely done.

On a serious note, I have the same problem. I have a tour-caliber swing with no ball. Put the ball down, and it becomes a lot of effort to swing.

See, a scratch golfer would have thrown some eagles in there....

I know lots of 30 handis with great swings, but until you take the ball out of your swing you will never realize the potential of that "tour caliber swing"...

I have never heard of this as a drill, just something that I have done many, many times. And my home course always let me go for free. And it works great on the range as well. But for some reason the on course make believe golf if you will, works wonders.

And if it improves your game, just send $25 to my paypal account..

I don't know if this will work for you, but it worked for a friend of mine who was struggling with this problem. I would have him warm up on the range hitting a few wedges to get his rhythm going. Then I would have him start his swing from the top of his backswing. This forced him to start his downswing smoothly. It's hard to do at first, but stick with it. After he did it for awhile, I had him go back to taking full swings. What it got him doing was making a smooth transaction from the backswing to the downswing. Most average golfers have a habit of trying to hit the ball from the top of their backswing. This helped him to store up his power until he needed it, at the ball and through it.

Here's another tip that worked for a different guy. I told him to hit a ball and finish his swing and pose for a few seconds. I wanted him to concentrate on a nice finish. If you watch the average golfer, they hardly ever finish their swing because they're hitting at the ball. If you watch low handicappers or the pros, you'll notice they always finish their swings, and in balance.

Hope this helps in some way.

Practice bring the club to the top and stopping. When you get to the top, relax, loosen your hands, take a couple of pumps towards the ball. Then take a swing with a long transition at the top.
