Driver face angle: open?close?square?

When I was checking out driver specs, I saw some with face angle close/square/open. I was wondering how does this actually work.
Say with a close or open faced driver, when I'm setting up I will just naturally align the face square to the target. Duh!
Why would people spend $200 more to get a "TP" version of a driver when you can just set up the driver with open/square face?

Am I missing something here?

First off, the TP version is more than just an open face. TaylorMade ships a better shaft, more weights, etc.

Second, a driver with a closed face is different than a driver with an open face. When you set the driver down, it'll rest closed or open. Manipulating it from there will change the loft, the shaft alignment (and thus the grip), and so on.

This was the original HiBore we reviewed resting at address position:

Needless to say, I didn't like how often it sent the ball left... and opening it up not only felt awkward (the sole wasn't designed for that), but it added loft and looked funny at address.

Thanks for the clarification!!
So they actually designed the head with a set face angle.
I really thought the face angle was the result of how they install the head and shaft, maybe with help grip reminder.

Re: Driver face angle: open?close?square?

A lot of club manufacturers change the weighting in the club head in order to manipulate the face angle. Take for example the R7 Draw.

Weighting just shifts the center of gravity, which then switches up the gear effect. Weight in the heel also helps you close the clubface more quickly, while weight in the toe keeps the clubface open a bit longer.

But the face angle itself isn't changed by the weighting... as you swing it (closing the clubface) or the spin it puts on the ball (gear effect) are where weight can affect where the ball goes.

I wish every driver were made square and we all had to learn how to hit them.

Re: Driver face angle: open?close?square?

well we had the thread on the different versions of the tour burner and burner, and basically the diff between the tour burner tp and tour burner was that the tp had an open face whereas the tour burner just had a square face. i think most drivers unless tp or more advanced drivers for better players do have a slightly closed face. even the normal burner has a slightly closed face and the draw version is really closed.
