Well, in two weeks I'm going to play Arcadia Bluffs, often touted as the best public and arguably the best (public or private) course in Michigan. Golf Digest lists it as #10 public in the US. Everyone I know who has played it has said the same thing... ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! I am staying at Garland Resort and playing the Reflections course at Garland the next day and then comming back home.

Anyone been to either or have comments?

here are some links to the places and an article on Arcadia Bluffs...

Haven't played it. Read great things about it. I'll be in Michigan in August and hopr to play Arcaia. There are so many excellent courses in Northern Michigan it's hard to choose just one or two. Post a report and some photos when you get back.

There are definately a lot of courses to choose from... thankfully I have been fortunate enough to play several of them... but not Arcadia yet. Since I am moving away from MI... I figure I'd better play it now.

I will post some photos when I get back for sure... I wish I hadn't forgot my camera at Pine Needles earlier this year.

Well right now it's only $75 until May 11th... then it goes up to $130 and eventually $180. Still not too bad considering the price of Pebble Beach, Whistling Straights, and some of the other big names.

I played it last October and it was amazing!! I waited for the fall rates ($75) and it was totally worth it. We ended up catching a nice day, so that was just a bonus. I recommend those who have a chance to play it to play it.

Have you played any other "big name" courses and if so, how did it compare. Did you take a caddie or a cart? I would rather walk the course, but my mother is comming so I'll probably have to ride, thus no caddie.

Has anyone been overseas to compare the course to a true Scottish or Irish links?

I really haven't played any big name courses other than Arcadia, but I have played very good ones in Michigan. Some that come to mind is The Red Hawk, The Grande, The Dream, The Nightmare, Hawk's Eye (Tom Izzo has his annual outing there, The Chief, and Yarrow. The courses I named are all really great courses, but Arcadia blows all of them out of the water. The time we went to Arcadia, they didn't have caddies available. We ended up just riding a cart. Looking forward in going again sometime in the near future.

Yes...bring your wallet (green fees) and exta balls (I lost them in the tall grass, off course on the beach, etc.

Then again I expect that with my game. It is a neat course, one to experience for sure.

Putter: Odyssey Dual Force 2 Rossie or Tommy Armour EFT Series Model 6

You will not be disappointed in the course, but I hope you're not opposed to playing in some inclement weather. Also, I'd make sure to make your tee time as close to noontime as possible.

Good deal... like you, I have not played a bunch of big name courses. I have played Pine Needles (NC) and Shepard's Hollow (MI) which are in the top 50 public, but nothing that gets as much press as Arcadia. I have also played a couple of the courses you mentioned and thought they were fantastic... so if Arcadia blows them away... it should be a real treat.

Enough with the bad vibes... the weather will be perfect!

Seriously though, I know how Northern Michigan in May can be, I'm just hoping for the best, and will take mediocre. I already played Pine Needles in brutal cold this year back in February, so what the heck. Plus you can't beat $75.00. My tee time is 12:30, so just after lunch, which should be about the warmest time of day. I know that in early May I can expect anything from 80 degrees and sunny to 40 degrees and sleeting, so I am prepared. I can cancel up to 48 hrs, so if it is going to be awful, I will just wait till another time. As long as it's not raining I could really care less about the cold though... sunshine would be nice, but as long as it's not raining and cold, it will be a good time.

    • Hit my tee shot just into the penalty area and barely found it. Swung hard just in case I hit it. It was slightly downhill with a heavy tailwind. I don't actually hit my 9i 170 yards.
    • Right. The difference between being 120 out and 70 out for me (this is the important part) is negligible and not worth putting other risks into play off the tee.   Ok the argument against driver is that my shot cone is comically large. It puts every possible outcome into play. You can't see the green from the tee so there's a good chance I'd have to wait for it to clear which would slow down play. That's the third tee right in the middle of the firing range there. I really don't want to wait just to hit a terrible shot and I especially don't want to injure somebody. Yea I have no problem playing out of the rough short of the bunker if I'm just going to lay up short of the bunker, but I absolutely need to avoid flaring it right into the penalty area if I'm going to be laying up in the first place. As a general strategy I understand where you're coming from. But since we're specifically talking about me (this is a shot I'm going to have to hit on Saturday), I think the cost is fairly marginal. I hit the ball 8' closer on average from 50-100 than I do from 100-150 from the fairway and rough and the green success % difference is 4%. Bunker might as well be a penalty drop. Based on the data,  Here's my SG:A data compared to a 10: I honestly don't know how to use SG for decision making. That's why I was mostly looking at proximity to hole and green success rate for comparison. I mostly use SG as a way to track my progress. All good. Like I said, I appreciate the discussion. It makes me think. If I didn't want to see alternative/opposing viewpoints to my own I just wouldn't post anything. You should post it! In your own swing thread, of course. It's been a fun exercise.
    • Played my first 2024 round at Pierce Lake. Boomed my first drive down #10 fairway, then slowly slipped into mediocrity. 83 (69.6/131). The high point was going 2 of 4 on sand saves. My sand game is pretty marginal but today I must have discovered the secret for a couple hours.
    • day 34. Technique practice. Became too quick and outcome oriented. need to slow down and work on technique again.
    • Day 534, April 18, 2024 Practice before lessons today. Priority piece. No sim this time. 🙂
