Before you look at my handicap and say "no no no! are you crazy you cant hit blades!" Im just gunna lay it out for you and then based on that try and help me out.

Right now i have Titleist 775 CB Irons with regular flex NS-Pro 100 shafts. I went playing with my dad and his 3 handicap friend and he noticed that i wasn't have good control with my irons. He said the reason was the i was using too whippy a shaft and that i would need a stiff flex in them.

So we went down to Golfer's Warehouse after the round and tried some irons with stiffs in them. I tried some irons and i hit them, and they felt great. He said with the way that he sees my hit the ball that i could maybe hit blades. So i get the swing speed monitor and bring it over and use contact tape to see if i can handle hitting blades full time. I hit a Titleist 695 MB 3 iron dead square 5 times in a row @ an average of 100 mph each swing.

I liked them so much i demoed a 5 iron and was hitting it great. The only mishits that i had with it were a few pushes. My question is do you guys think that i should make the jump to start playing blades full time or if i should just get my 775's reshafted, because right now they are about the same price either way.

Not all Golf Simulators are true. Try a set of blades on the course first before you even look into buying them. The Mat and the Grass are two completely different things.

I was thinking of going to blades also until I found the Titleist AP2's.

I would never have graphite in my irons, but that said I just switched from Callaway Big Berthas to Titleist 695 CB's and the distance control is so much better. The big lawn instruments tended to jump sometimes while the 695's are money on distance. Anywho get what you hit best but I think Blades are more look then anything.

I have about the same cap as you and I play black cg1 cleveland blades steel shaft. The last set I played prior was the Tommy Armour 845 silver scot. I have no problem hitting the blades as my iron play is much better then an average 15 handicap. It has been my strong suit since I started golf. If you are confident with an iron in your hands then blades won't be a problem. I can move the ball around very simply. My father plays cavity backs and I have a hard time trying to hit those which is the funny thing.

i tried them on the grass at my coures and even though i pick the ball clean with them im still getting good trajectory and distance.

And i would never use graphite shafts either, i just cant stand the feel of them. I need steel iron shafts.

I would not get your current irons re-shafted. I believe the heads were probably weighted to work with graphite shafts--if you stick steel shafts in their you might seriously mess up the balance and swing weight.

Just pick up a used set of MP-14's, 33's, 37's or some Hogan, Titleist blades. You can find decent used sets for $100 to $200 on Ebay.

Keep your current irons and just play around with the blades for a while. The nice thing about forged blades, is even if they're used, you can still get them bent to fit you and you won't have spent tons of money.

Start by playing with just the PW-7iron or something. If you like them, switch over to the blades. But if you hit your current irons ok, DO NOT re-shaft or trade them in--just keep them in the closet until...? Trust me, I've done this and still kick myself when thinking of all the great iron sets I let go for nothing.

Also, if you re-shaft, you'll still be wondering what it feels like to play blades and I bet you'll still want blades eventually anyway.

Happy hunting!

Yeah i use cavity backed too and I love them

We seem to be about the same skill level (Mid 80's on 18) but my ball striking with my longer irons is the worst part of my game(short game is my forte') but if u can hit 5 bladed 3 irons in a row with good control and solid, I say trade up and get em!

Perhaps a few posters didn't realize that NS PRO 100s are STEEL shafts made by Nippon and they are great shafts too!

Yah they are steel shafts...i was wondering why people were talking about graphite shafts. I went again to Golfer's Warehouse and now i might need an extra stiff flex because i was hitting around 100 mph with a 6 iron there.

If you buy new clubs, you can sell your old ones. You can't do that if you get them re-shafted. Or did you factor that into your pricing?

I'd get the new clubs. Maybe not the blades, but new clubs of some kind. Other clubs you might like from Titleist include the ZB, the AP2, and even the AP1. For the AP1, you might not want the stock high-launch shafts.
Not all Golf Simulators are true. Try a set of blades on the course first before you even look into buying them. The Mat and the Grass are two completely different things.

If he hits them solidly, that doesn't matter much on the simulator. Solid contact is solid contact.

Perhaps a few posters didn't realize that NS PRO 100s are STEEL shafts made by Nippon and they are great shafts too!

Indeed. I wondered where all the "graphite shaft" comments were coming from.

I have two options for what i can do:

1) I can get my current 775CB's reshafted with stiff shafts and keep the forgiveness that comes with those cavity backs. With buying new shafts, grips, and the labor cost involved the total price is looking at about 300+. 2) Or i can trade in my 775's for about $250 and use the store credit to but the old demo set of the 695 mbs which are at $550. So either way I'm looking at around 300 dollars. Now im wondering whether i should stick with the forgiveness of the cavity backs or should i upgrade to the blades, which i have the capability to hit, but demand more from my game.

Unless it was on carpet. I can hit darn near anything solid on a swing mat. If you haven't played them in grass, you might want to do that first.

Yeah try to hit them on the driving range on grass and i would say trade up, from the looks of it you wont need the control of cavity backs

Make yourself a deal to get a new set when you break 80 or when your HDCP gets belw 10. Placebo effect can cost you thousands before you realize your a 15 for a reason. I Went thru 2-3 sets of forged blades before I had a talk with myself.

    • I agree with @klineka & @DaveP043 above.  When a new member first joins the club they cold be told that they are not eligible for tournaments until they have an established HCP.  As you said, it only takes a few rounds.  If they do not to post HCP that was their choice and choices have consequences.  If playing in the tournament is important to them then they should step up and establish an HCP.  Maybe they miss the 1st tournament, is that a real big deal?  And if it is a "Big Deal" to them then they had the opportunity to establish the HCP. As for not knowing how to report for HCP I assume your club has a pro and they should be able to assist in getting the scores reported and I suspect out of state courses may also have staff that can assist if asked.

    • Cool here's my tweak, "If a player’s ball lies in the general area and there is interference from exposed tree roots or exposed rocks that are in the fairway or 1 club length from the fairway the tree roots and exposed rocks are treated as ground under repair. The player may take free relief under Rule 16.1b.[But relief is not allowed if the tree roots only interfere with the player’s stance.]
    • I would never do the extended warranty on the $50 slow cooker.  I also routinely reject the extended service plans on those toys we buy for the grand-kids.  I do consider them on higher cost items and will be more likely to get one if the product has a lot of "Electronic Tech" that is often the problem longer-term.  I also consider my intended length of ownership & usage.  If my thought is it would get replaced in 2-3 years then why bother but if I hope to use it for 10 years then more likely to get the extension. I did buy out a lease about a year ago.  Just prior to the lease end date the tablet locked up and would not function.  I got it repaired under the initial warranty and would not have bought it out if they had not been able to fix it since IMO once electronic issues start in a car they can be hard to track down & fix.  They did fix it but when I bought out the lease I paid up for the extended warranty the would cover electronic failures because my intent is to keep that car for another 8-10 years and I just do not trust the electronics to last.  Last week the touch screen went black and was unresponsive.  It reset on the 2nd time I restarted the car but that is exactly how the last malfunction started.  I fully expect to have a claim on that on repair under the extended warranty.  I do not recall the exact cost to fix last time since I did not pay it but I think it was @ $700-$800 and I suspect that will be higher next time.
    • Have you looked at Model Local Rule F-9 Relief from Tree Roots in or Close to Fairway?  You could extend this to cover exposed rocks.  The rule is recommended to be used only for areas relatively near the fairway, a player who hits a shot 20 yards in the woods doesn't really deserve relief.   Players can always take Unplayable Ball relief, they're not required to play it from a rock or a root.  Of course, they hate to take the penalty stroke too.
