Hello everyone.

Well, instead of running when I get my ankle healed up, I was thinking of taking up mountain biking. Can anyone recommend good manufacturers? I'm looking at Diamond Back, Mongoose, Giant and Cannondales. I'll also need to know what size frame to get. I'm 5'10".

I'm partial to Specialized. The rule of thumb is you should have 1-2" space while standing over the bike. This determines frame size.

Here's a good link it's metric, but you'll get the idea.
I've spent most of my life golfing - the rest I've just wasted.

Hey you should get a Gary Fisher... I had one for 2 years straight, and it never broke, but then sadly it got stolen. They are great bikes, if you are 5'10" then you should probably get around a 19" frame, but if you go to any mountain bike shop they will size you up for free when you purchase a bike from them.

Thanks all. I have seen Gary Fisher bikes on craiglist. I'm just looking to buy used, don't want to plunk down about a grand on a new bike. But have seen some good stuff there.

Well, first you need to decide what kind of mountain biking you are going to get into. Are you mainly going to be doing cross country mountain biking, downhill/ freeride/ shore (technical downhill) biking, or Cross mountain biking (mix of XC and DH, such as the Trans-Rockies).

If you are looking to the XC side of mountain biking and are a novice biker, most bigger compaines will have a lower level XC bike that will be perfectly satisfactory for you. For example, the Specialized Hardrock/ Rockhopper is a decently priced XC bike that would be more than enough bike for a beginninger/ novice. Also look at Norco, Giant, and Trek.
Gary Fischer is owned by Trek, so they are basically rebranded Treks, depending on the model.

As for sizing, it is a personal thing. My dirt jump bike is very small, but i like the feel, wheras my XC bike is bigger for the feel on the trails.

I raced for 6 years.....I have ridden almost everything at one time or another. I would buy Specialized w/o question.

i agree with larlev. i used to mountain bike off and on, mostly trails in the nearby canyon but also did some downhill up at mammoth mountain. I had a specialized hard rock for a little while and that was a good hard tail for medium trail riding in my area. if you want a good full suspension bike, specialized has a few good options. GT also has some good full suspension bikes. My neighbor had one and it was a great ride. And last but not least, KONA. I rode a KONA Stinky for a while. Its a downhill bike but its not as bulky as the other downhillers IMO, so it works fine on trails too.

First and foremost, more important than brand or components, is to get a bike that fits you. You could have the most uber-zoot bike made, but if you aren't comfortable on it you won't ride it.

Second, I'll second that you need to determine how you intend to ride it. General riding, cross country (XC), downhill (DH), big huck (jumps)? These are different styles that require different bikes. If you aren't sure what you want to do, get a nice general bike (fork only, not full suspension) and ride it everywhere. You'll be better informed on how you ride when you go to upgrade.

Third, it's hard to go wrong with any of the major brands (Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, Trek, etc). I've owned lot of bikes, including at least one of each of the aforementioned. All were excellent bikes, albeit with a slightly different character. My current bike is a Marin Eldridge Grade, steel frame, Manitou fork, full XT, hydro discs. It's superb!

My ankle is almost healthy enough to the point where I've been more and more seroiusly hunting craigslist.

I hear you on tthe comfort. A member at my club is a big road biker and mentioned a good local store where I can get on bikes and check proper heights. Haven't gone yet, but, I'm 5'10", a little shorter than a buddy of mine that rides a 20" frame.

How I want to ride... Oddly enough, mainly on streets, but I do want to keep off-roadablily open as I do have a nice mix of road and trails right by my place. And my friends ride too.

Sounds like you want a general XC bike, rigid tail most likely. I'm 5'9" and I prefer a 17.5-18" bike. Height is secondary to inseam and torso length. Get fitted (kinda like clubs, eh?) and it will be a much more enjoyable bike.

Well, like mentioned I've been searching around craigslist for a while now and this bike stood out to me. So, I went and met the owner, got on it and it felt great size-wise, looked to be in pretty great condition. So, I plunked down $360, asking price was $400, and now its mine... Cannondale F400. I'm excited to take it out! It came with some nice extras. Road light, rear light (which I'll probably take both off) the seat pouch, and a computer.

haha, I thought you might get a kick out of that (seeing your avatar). That's my 1966 912, I've had it for a little over a year now. Come to think of it, that's another fine craigslist purchase. It was a bit of a bear when I frist bought it, the previous owner but these crazy Dellorto carbs on it that gave my mechanic a handful trying to figure out, and its still a bit of a chore to get it past first gear. I am constantly thinking of selling it, until I get in and take it for a ride, not the fastest, but super fun to be in.
