Prov1 vrs. Prov1x - What's the difference?

I am going to get serious about my game and I'm a decent golfer, about a 10 handicap. My question is what's the difference between the Prov1x and the Prov1 in terms of short game playability (This is where I'm looking to be better than the rest).

I thought the X was for higher swing speeds which would mean the ball is softer (and takes a higher swing speed to compress the ball).

Yes you're way off

The v1x is four-pieced ball and as I remember it is a bit harder than v1 with less spin

Sorry to be a buzz kill guys, but there a quite a few threads about this comparison:

in short Pro V1 > softer/higher spin rate in short irons Pro v1x > harder/distance/

Marpr has it in one, but also remember Pro-Vs are not the be all and end all of balls, keep trying different balls until you find a ball you like.

your wrong about the x being non conforming. many tour pros use it. the pro-v1x will fly further than the pro-v1. the pro-v1x will spin more off the tee and more with your irons. the pro-v1x is for a bit faster swings..it flies further, spins less with irons, but has the most spin greenside.

You're thinking of Pro V1(x) X-OUTs. These are balls (V1 or V1x) that have some sort of blemish that occurred during the manufacturing process. They usually have the same playing characteristics as the normal balls, but are sold for a reduced price. They are not submitted to the USGA for review, so are not on the conforming ball list.

Here we go, lets simplify all of the strange misinformation that has gone on in this thread

Pro V1 - Conforming - softer cover which means a little less distance with drives and irons but more control around the greens i.e. more spin.

Pro V1x - Conforming - harder cover (and four piece) equalling more distance but slightly less spin around the greens and on iron shots (really good for people who spin the ball a lot)

Generally both scuff a lot, although the pro v1 is more prone to this. The Pro V1x is more suited either to a high swing speed or someone who wants less spin and a bit more distance.

Unless you want to go into dimple pattern differences etc that is how it is.

Driver - 905r 9.5* with UST Proforce VT Stiff
3 Wood - SQ 3+ 13* with Grafallloy prolaunch blue Stiff
5 Wood - SQ 5* 19 with Aldila NV65 stiff
Irons - MP 67 3 + 5-PW 2deg Up + 1/2" with DG S300 shaft.

I can - it's a thicker cover/casing combo, which is part of why it's softer. Anyway, the casing helps with the durability, is what I've heard.

Also, add to the list that the Pro V1 flies a teeny tiny bit lower than the Pro V1x.

Erik, I've been kicking around the idea of switching to the V1 to get a little more spin in the short game.

The V1 isn't quite as long, or so I'm told. That really doesn't bug me as I'm a fairly long hitter to begin with. What concerns me most about switching is accuracy off the tee. This is a difficult question to answer, but how big a penalty do you think you pay (accuracy-wise) with the increased driver spin?

Hell if I know. I sucked back a Pro V1 on a 20-yard pitch shot (from slightly damp rough) the one time I decided to play it. That was all I needed to see to go back to the Pro V1x.

It ballooned off the tee for me, too. Can't say I've played it enough to know how much more. Try it and see. You should almost always work from the green backwards in fitting yourself to a ball.

I really have to finally ask. Why in the world are people using the phrase "suck back"? It's ridiculous and ignorant sounding. Why not say "spun back"? People get upset when bunkers are called sand traps, but it's kosher to say "sucked back"?
