How To Drive The Ball Farther

I am always looking for ways to hit the ball farther. Recently I have been working on doing some wrist exercises specifically dumbell wrist curls to make my wrists stronger and I seem to have gained a few extra yards as of late. What are some tips that have worked for you to increase your driving distance? Thanks.

I'm curious as to why you'd want to increase your muscle strength in your wrists? Won't this restrict the release, or do you have a different approach?

Make sure you shift your weight and hold your lag slightly longer.

For some reason, when a lot of people join this forum they find that they start hitting it a lot further, usually upwards of 280 yards.

I've actually lost about 20 yards in the last 6 months due to being busy at work and then not having enough energy to work out in the evenings.

When I was working out I was doing lots of wrist curls and sit ups. So try those two and see if it makes any difference...

I don't think STRENGTH has anything to do with it. I consistantly get out driven by a 92-year-old man that plays out here. In fact, he has one of the longer drives of the group I play with (I'm a newbie, so I guess my distances don't count... but he consistantly drives further than just about everyone else).

I would assume the most imporant thing is a good swing and contacting the ball well. Strengh is last on the list.

I agree. Tension free hands and wrists will allow the club to whip/snap through the ball better and increase your distance. Of course making contact with the sweet spot helps too.

I've gained just a few yards by swinging a weighted club over the past couple of years. I believe length results from a combination (not in equal parts) of strength, flexibility, mechanics, and solid contact.

I find I get the furthest drives from relaxing my wrists and arms, and getting a good coil/uncoil in the swing. If I catch a good one in the center of the club when everything comes together I can get some great distance.

That's when I'm trying to keep it in the fairway. I pretty much hit it 400 yards.

I hit 280 with my 3 wood.

You hit the 3 wood 400 yards??? 1) In your dreams? 2) down a hill? 3) With 50 m.p.h. winds behind your back? How are you able to do this when the pros can't even get 350 with a driver?

I'm a former competitive bodybuilder and powerlifter. Strength means very little, trust me. You want no tension. I try to feel like I'm letting go of the club at impact. The trick is flexibilty and timing. Core strength helps a little and forearm strength helps a little out of the rough but it's not where your power is at.

It takes a while to learn, I was benching 500+lbs and hitting the driver 200 yards. Once I quit competitive lifting and worked on stretching (I still train, but not as heavy), I gained yardage. I'm about 280 with 300 there if I go after it.
It was quite embarassing weighing 240lbs, wearing XXL shirts and getting outdriven by a skinnny, 50 year-old man...:)

When I really want to hit the ball as far as I can, the main thing I think about is taking a swing about parallel and keeping my head still throughout the swing. I tend to unfocus when I try and kill the ball, but by taking a decent swing(never past parallel) and keeping my head still I seem to have good success. I never really try and kill the ball on the course, because I tend to swing short and slow. Also, working out is not going to increase your distance much if at all. There is a kid at my range that drives the ball on average about 300-310 and he is one of the skinniest kids I know. It's a proper weight transfer and proper swing mechanics that will get you to drive the ball extremely far.

The main variable is clubhead speed (assuming good contact) so you have to figure out what affects clubhead speed most? Weight transfer? Strength? Timing?

I dont know what you guys do but I drive the ball like a single digit handicap. Main points that allow me to have incredible distance and control is very lose set up. I don't care about my backswing. I take it very slow keeping my head on the ball. When I get to the top I fire my hips very hard and try to get them past left of the target. I do have a glitch in my swing that I think makes it all work so well for me. When I start taking my club back I move my body about one inch back also at the start of my swing while still maintaining a good focus on the ball which allows me to stay back behind the ball and launch it. I shift my body weight but still stay behind the ball. Most important is to swing hard and loose. It is impossible to hit good drives when trying to steer the ball. Oh and make that loose practice swing and apply it to the actual drive. I hate seeing that really loose swing in practice and then everyone tightening up when its time to drive.

To stay fit. He wasn't bulking up. And he did relatively little weight lifting - he did situps to work on his core muscles, and a lot of aerobics. Minimal weight lifting, and the weights he did lift were low weight with many reps. Helps tone muscles rather than just build them.

Speed is more important than strength. A golf club isn't that heavy.

yes but the bigger your upper arms and upper body, the more clubhead speed you can generate.
