I am going to golf galaxy tonight and plan on buying a new putter and was looking for suggestiong on what putters to try. I am definitely looking at the TM Spider and one of the Rife putters. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Looking for a mallet style as well.

Try em all! Ping's Crazy-E, the Odyssey 2 Balls & the Marxmen, the Scotty Futura's.. there are a lot of good mallet putters out there. Don't forget about the Hogan's by Bettinardi are nice as well... so many to choose from.

Good luck! Pete

I hear/read that the SC Red X is one of the better "players" mallets available. On the lower end, im fond of the karsten ping c67 myself. It might be the only mallet style putter i'll consider using.

Just get a croquet mallet :)

I just got a Newport 2 Studio Select about a month ago and love it. I know it's not what you are looking for but I thought I'd just throw that out there.

Be sure you allow yourself plenty of time. I went through this process a few weeks ago myself. Went to my favorite golf store and spent about an hour and a half on the practice green. I tried every putter they had. The ones that seemed promising got laid aside for a kind of playoff. I also took my old putter with me so that I could evaluate the new ones against what I was used to. Obviously, a practice green in a store is not the same as the greens you will play on at the course so it's important to hit a few with your old putter to get a feel for the green before you start. Anyway, several of the putters in the store were not as good (for me) as my old putter. The ones that worked better got laid aside and then I compared those against each other. The one I ended up buying is a Mitchell Brass Cup Mallet. I love it! It took me several rounds to get used to it. Judging speed was the biggest challenge. Now that I'm starting to settle in with it I'm putting better than I've ever putted in my life. I've made several long par savers that would have been bogeys or even double bogeys with my old putter. If there's a better feeling in golf than draining a long putt to save par I don't know what it would be. Birdie, maybe?

I just went through this process with my wife. When you're testing the putters, don't forget to see how they handle mis-hits. I'm convinced if you hit any putter properly on the right line, the putt will go in. What happens when you hit off center? Or when the putter is moving slightly out of line? What kind of feedback do you get and how much does the putter twist?

These were all important questions we asked ourselves when evaluating putters. We went to Golf Galaxy 3 times for a total of several hours before she made a decision (we were also testing out drivers). She went with the Rossie style because she's not a fan of the mallets. I'm not ready for a new putter yet, but I like the mallet style.

Spend the extra money and go through their putter fitting to make sure whatever you end up buying fits you. If possible, have one of their PGA pros watch you putt and then does the putter fitting.

Also, check to make sure your current putter is set up with the correct lie/loft/shaft length for your physical and putting stroke characteristics. You might find out that your current putter is fine after any necessary adjustments.

I got an Odyssey Sabertooth White Hot XG for my birthday. Its pretty heavy which is good and the soft insert on the face has helped a lot with my control. I would definitely advise looking at the sabertooth (or any odyssey's for that matter), the only drawback is the price.

I just spent majority of the day at my local golf store going through all the putters they had. I had a Cameron Detour that I loved the feel of but was having lots of problems controlling distance and aiming. I tried out all sorts of putters from every company and ever price range. I wanted to make myself like the new Cameron studio selects and was fully prepared to spend the money on it. I walked out with one of the new Odyssey White Hot Tour #5 for $150. I kept going back to this putter and really am pleased with the control and feel of it and I spent half of what I was prepared to. I guess these are brand new this year, my store just got them in last night. Great Putters!!!

I tried out a few putters today, I immediately discovered that I much prefer a face-weighted putter instead of a toe-weighted one, which is what my current putter is. I really liked the Odyssey two-ball CS, which is a compact two-ball alignment putter with center shaft, but I surprised myself with a Ping Piper. I just couldn't seem to miss putts from about 8 feet, which is my 'trouble area'. Unfortunately my local pro shop only has a few different putters to try and there aren't any big stores nearby.

I'm on the hunt for a new putter with face weighting and little or no offset, 34". I really want to try some of the YES! putters but there's nowhere nearby to try them out. I don't want to order one without trying it first since a putter is the most individualized club in the bag.

I went with the TM Spider, I tried a lot, including the black series, odysseys, yes putters, and the Rife 2 bar hybrid which came in 2nd place on my list. I just loved the Spider and the look of it (yes, a shocker, i know). Thanks for all the help.

That looks really nice... like a nicer version of what I've been gaming for the past 7 years..
