I just recently started experimenting with using a couple hybrids, 3i and 4i. I went out to the range with them, and had a heck of a time with topping balls. I made sure I wasnt pulling my head out. Do you guys usually put the ball forward, middle, or back in your stance when you are hitting a hybrid club? Thanks for any tips!

I play my hybrids perhaps a half ball forward than i would a 7i. The standard position for a long iron I suppose. If you're topping you're most likley swinging up on the ball from the top of your backstroke.
THE WEAPONS CACHE..

Pure guess, but are you playing them like a 3- or 5-wood? You could be standing too far from the ball, reaching out to it. Hybrids are generally meant to be set up to more like an iron. You're not really hitting down on them, but it's not a long sweep, either. Keep the ball position front/back same as a mid-iron and make sure your arms are hanging naturally. Lastly, don't overswing! Let the club fall into place and do the work.

Nothing in the swing is done at the expense of balance.

I have the same problem with topping my hybrids, and when I do get good contact I usually make a wicked slice. I think it may be due in part to them not being properly fitted for me and my swing, but I know I can't blame the clubs.

I would try moving it back, if you have it way forward that is. When I first tried a hybrid I was inclided to set up like a 3 wood. I was told to imagine that I had a 5 iron in my hand, and that has worked pretty good for me.

do you feel like you are reaching for it at all?

On all standard shots, I place the ball one or two inches from my left heel. Driver, 5 iron, wood, hybrid, wedges... all in the same spot.

Are you swinging the same with it as your irons? I don't see why not too... If I can swing all the clubs the same, my setup can be the same.

I just think it's a lot easier this way.

Edit: What I'm mainly trying to say, is that if you are swinging the same and you can't hit the hybrids, that means something is wrong wrong with your swing. Changing the ball position may superficially fix the result (you may be able to hit it solidly now, straight even), but it does not fix the cause. You should be able to hit each club with the same standard swing.

I think my problem may lie in the fact that I was addressing the ball like some mentioned above, like I had a fairway wood in my hand. I will try using the same stance I use with my irons tomorrow and see how that works out. Thanks guys!

To the guy with the wicked slice, I used to do that as well with just about all my clubs, especially my driver. Slightly closing the club head did wonders for me, and I even have a slight draw sometimes now.

I have found that I get OK contact with my hybrids if I really just ease up on the swing and focus on good ball contact, and let the club do the work. The problem is that most of the time I am using a hybrid, I am in trouble, and I have a tendency to try to murder the ball to get it up on the fairway.

I do tend to set up with it like it's a 5 wood, while I know I should set it up like it's a 5 iron; But the lie angle is wrong for either style, and I still tend to slice them because I can't seem to get my swing quite right. Maybe my wrists don't release fast enough, I don't know.

I can't wait to pick up a couple of properly fitted hybrids.

I went through this same thing and i found myself trying to hit it to hard so i move the ball where i would play my 5iron in my stance and just take a nice easy swing...that seemed to help me
