I know people are tending to make a big deal out of a seemingly innocuous comment, but what do you think about Tiger's comments regarding the Stanley Cup?

http://sports.aol.ca/article/Tiger-W...-Final/248488/

I'm not a huge hockey fan, but as a Sharks supporter and a fan of all sports, I think this flippant comment was uncalled for. Especially since golf is in the same category (not quite one of the 3 major sports in America, on par with hockey and NASCAR). I know people over at ESPN are pretty p*ssed about it.

Tiger is like that though, unless It has to do with golf, he really doesn't wanna talk about it.

In reality, he has a semi-good point.

Why make the season go from September/October (whichever one it is) All the way until June? It's too much, People are into baseball (like tiger said) and other sports, when Golf comes around for us golfers, who really watches T.V during the day When the Afternoon games are on?

They make the NHL season way to long, Have it start early August and run Until Beginning of May.

Most athletes don't knock other athletes. I think Tiger might not be a hockey fan but more people watch hockey than golf in North America, so pffft.

I have more to say on the topic, but I'm cutting myself off here.

I'd have to aggree myself that it is uncalled for... being a hockey fan and player for 10 years, its not great to hear one diss a sport that they probably have never played.

He could have been a little more PC with his answer but he chose not to, and just gave his opinion, which obviously is not a very good one, hockey has a very large following. Truth be told, many people feel that way about golf.

That quote was pretty amusing. He knocks hockey but he wants to talk about the Dodgers? The Dodgers? This ain't 1988.

I doubt anyone's upset that he doesn't care about the result. As for not many people watching it... do they? I really don't know. Hockey isn't on my radar, although I would like to get into it, as a fan, time permitting. I do intend to take in a game... whenever they are. I actually have an NHL hat and I wear it more off the course than any other hat; my only other sports hats are U.S. Open hats. And my favorite sports video game as a kid was Blades of Steel on the NES.

But, other than Tom Leykis on the radio and a friend who tried getting a group of us together for a Kings game, I've never heard anyone even discussing hockey around here. And a So Cal team won the Stanley Cup at some point in the not-too-distant past. But I did hear golf discussed around here, even before I cared at all about golf. Before I had ever played, ever hit a ball, ever owned a club, when I thought it was a stupid little game that I'd never want anything to do with, people I knew who also had my then-feelings towards golf knew that "some Indian guy (sic) beat Tiger Woods" and what the green jacket meant.

It's probably different in parts of the country that actually have a winter season, though.

Like I stated in the Hockey thread in the sports section, the ratings for game 5 the other night were the highest since the 2002 Finals. That means they were the highest since the strike cut out the 2004-2005 season. That's good news for hockey fans, and the young talent in the NHL is pretty promising. In fact, it's as promising as any other North American sport at the moment.

I don't follow the NHL religiously, but I have the utmost respect for those guys. I can't ice skate worth a damn, so that makes me respect them even more. They can do things I can't imagine doing, and that makes the sport pretty cool as far as I'm concerned.

Tiger didn't necessarily have his facts straight, but once again, he doesn't really have to give a rat's you know what about hockey if he doesn't want to. Eldrick doesn't cut many corners when it comes to giving an opinion on something, and that's respectable.

cmon now don't cut yourself off here, we both agree that Hockey is well watched over Golf in NA and is a great game, and even though his comments don't bother me much, they are stupid on his part...

Eh, I think he could have been a little less brash with his comment, but I don't care. I don't like hockey either and don't know a single person who watches it or even follows it for that matter.

There are more people watching hockey over golf in North America? This is a serious question for what it's worth. I can't imagine more people have been watching the Finals as opposed to The Masters or Players. I guess there may be more throughout the season because of all the team's involvement, but that's still debatable I would think.

I'd be interested to see some numbers though. I could be dead wrong.

Um, we actually have a Central Hockey League team here in OKC as well as another in Tulsa :P I love people who think it's some kind of scene out of Tombstone down here. You know, we actually drive cars, have running water, have air conditioning, and I have never been on a horse, or seen a steer :)

I just don't care for hockey, and don't know anyone who does. That's all. Baseball, Basketball and Football is all I need for my sports viewing pleasure, and of course golf, but we're talking sports ;)

    • A bit of background. The Southern California Golf Association (SCGA) runs an annual event known as "Team Play." It is a wildly popular match play competition where Men's Clubs across the region put together teams of 20+ golfers together to compete against other clubs in a 16 vs. 16 match. In any given year, approximately 80-100 clubs will participate. Each club is grouped into "pods" of 4, and will play 6 total matches - one home and one away match against the other 3 clubs. The winning club from each pod advances to the Team Play Playoffs - a single elimination format - until a winner is crowned.  Antelope Valley Country Club just advanced to the championship match for the 3rd consecutive year. They won the championship in both 2022 and 2023.  Based on my review of the match history from the past 3 years (linked below), they have won 21 consecutive team matches. Keep in mind, these are handicapped matches, so this is not just a case where a group of sticks bands together to dominate the poor amateurs other SoCal clubs. Even if these guys are grinders who never quit, play their best under pressure and routinely putt the lights out, the law of averages still say that a streak of that nature is mathematically impossible.  Is there any plausible explanation beyond institutionalized sandbagging throughout the club? • Interesting that Scottie is #10 on the all time money list and he's been on the PGAT for 4 years. Of course, purses are bigger now, but  neat to look at non-the-less.  The list of top 18 money winners in PGA Tour history has plenty of surprises This list is updated through the 2024 RBC Heritage. To add, Scottie won 4.5 million at the Players, Jack played 44 seasons and won a little of 5 million on course.
