A long time ago I used a Bullseye model putter (that I wish I still had, actually, and which SHOULD be hidden somewhere in my parent's basement if I really cared to spend a few hours looking for it). Then I saved my pennies to get a Ray Cook M1-X. That, just last fall, was replaced by a Scotty Cameron Red X. That's been in my bag since.

So, 12 years playing golf, three putters (two by choice, one because it was all I could get), and that's a 1:4 ratio.

Note: If you're figuring your ratio, don't count the number of times you switch, but the actual different # of putters used. If I went back to my M1-X, for example, I'd still be 1:4.

Switching putters can prove to be your undoing. I've been using this Yes! Olivia for a while now and am really starting to enjoy it more. It has the right feel for me after I took it to the Smith custom shop. It had a horrid and hollow ting when I first got it and have put some cotton balls in it to deaden the sound.

I heard of a guy who cut a thin strip of t-shirt and stuffed it in there... it apparently really changed the sound/feel for the better. I'll give that a try. At any rate this little putter is working great. I love my Newport 2 but am fearful of even picking it up as it is so different and can throw my stroke off so easily. I made the mistake of using the Scotty for a while and it messed up my already shaky putting.

You gotta be careful switching up too much. Stick with one and perfect it. I should at least consider staying with one putter per season... but probably won't.

See now, that sounds odd to me. I agree that a different putter can play a little differently - the Futura Phantom Mallet I reviewed was a little "harder" feeling and sent the ball a little shorter, but that's an easy adjustment to make. I've putted with other people's putters in a round and done okay. The key is that my stroke doesn't change - the feel may be a little different so my distance control may suffer slightly for that stroke or two, but my stroke is the same.

I keep the same stroke when I practice putt with the blade of a wedge, too. So what sounds odd to me is something throwing off my "stroke." My stroke is always the same, and that's where I draw 95% of my confidence. The only thing a putter can really change is my confidence in the line and a little bit on distance control... and distance control is something I can adjust pretty quickly.

I have used 2 putters over the past 16 years. The first year I played I used a borrowed Titleist Bullseye. For the last 15 years I've used the same Ping Anser 3. I would love to buy a Scotty but I just can't justify it.

Okay I'm going to throw everyone's numbers out of whack. First I have to say "My name is Everardo and I love putters." I've been playing golf for 2 years and currently own 10 putters, down from 12.
I don't switch putters because I blame my game in fact I've had rounds with less than 30 putts with each putter and I putt well right or left handed.
I just like the look and feel of different putters. I will switch putters for different courses and conditions but really it just comes down to my mood. Of the ones I currently own are:

Right Hand
Ping Specify
Scotty JAT
Scotty Napa
Scotty Mizuno M100
Scotty Red X2
Yes! Sophia

Left Hand
Ping Pal
Scotty Futura Phantom
Scotty Newport 2005

Right/Left Hand
Ping 1A

The 3 that see the most action are the Ping 1A, Newport and M100

You didn't actually vote, though.

25 years & 5 putters
1st - I was 15 years old. I have no idea - some piece of junk beginner putter.
2nd - Ping Pal4
3rd - Zebra
4th - Odyssey 2 ball (belly)
Current - Taylor Made Monza Corza
(You figure out the ratio; I'm an English teacher and not a math teacher.)

On a more interesting note, I heard during the telecast yesterday that Scott Verplank has used the same putter his entire professional career. Now that is amazing to me. Considering the access those guys get to free equipment, I can't believe he has never changed. He has always been a solid putter, so I guess he doesn't want to mess with things, but I still can't believe it. Does anyone else find this amazing?

I'm a sucker for equipment, so if it was me I'd be spending a fair amount of time in the Scotty Cameron custom tour shop if I was a tour player. There is plenty of available equipment I'd avoid if I were a Tour player too... as I avoid as an amatuer. Nickent "pipe" putters come to mind.

The fact the Verplank has used the same putter is understandable in one sense... he found something he likes and has stuck with it. But yeah, its amazing that dispite the available equipment he's hung with the same flatstick. Maybe, like my dad, he sticks with what he knows.

I have probably 25 putters in my garage that I fool around with but I only play with a few of them on the course: a Scotty Pro Platinum Newport 2 Mid Slant, an Odyssey 2-Ball Blade, and an old Deep Face Bullseye. At one point I had the Scotty in the bag for about 5 years straight I think (a mere blink of the eye to some of you).

The Bullseye is good for working on my stroke. It feels great when hit correctly. I think the shaft is on the soft side too. I wish more putter manufacturers offered softer shafts in addition to softer heads.

7 years and 4 putters, It sounds respectable, but I played the first 5 years with one, then the 6th year with a different one and Last year i split time between the Ping Doc 15 and an odyssey 2 ball blade dfx. I had been very against even looking at the doc 15, but after two minutes of putting around with it, I was sold. I think the most important part is confidence and sometimes a new putter just gives someone confidence and for other people it's a matter of the ol'faithful. I work as a apprentice in the local pro shop which helps me afford this on a university students budget.

You could try another brand other than

you know. I'm beginning to think that there is some personal reason everything in your bag is of one company. Do you have a tatoo or something? You did have the Odyssey for 3 years, so it is possible.

Fairways and Greens.

My numbers are a bit skewed, since I've been in the golf business for more than 10 years (plenty of freebies). I have at least 20 putters in my basement, and have given away at least that many after one or two rounds.

I agree with Erik. If your stroke stays pretty much the same, it shouldn't bother you much to switch putters. I think putting is about 90 percent mental, anyway. Sometimes, you just need to look at a different putter to get the ball rolling right.

I keep coming back to my trusty Ping Scottsdale Anser as my mainstay. But I used four putters for multiple rounds this year, including an Odyssey Dual Force 338, an Odyssey White Steel 2-Ball and the MacGregor by Bobby Grace MOI-GT whatever-it's-called.

Played golf for 15 odd years now, on 3 putters total. First one was a mini-golf putter I snatched oops!

Next was a "Fazer" something or other, and just recently I've gotten back into serious golf and have bought myself a Red X2.

    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
    • Slight digression on the way to my point. Back in the day there were a lot of people who said that Tiger won because of “the Tiger effect” where people pushed too hard and made mistakes trying to catch him and fell by the wayside. I thought that was BS. It was just that he was that much better than them. I don’t think anything has changed my mind on that.    The hype about Miles Russell is very limited. I’ve seen nothing about him outside of some fairly hardcore golf websites. But I think that the reason those people are talking about him is because he is very good. Same as Tiger. And like I said he just broke one of Tiger’s records. That gets hardcore golf fans to pay attention.
    • No disrespect felt, but since you did apologize you can disrespect once in the future with no guilt.
    • So do a few thousand others. 😉 Something like 14 players born in any year will have PGA Tour status for 3+ years. What drew you to this? He's not from where you live, right? Family friend?
