since I just moved I am looking for new courses in my area. the 8th hole on the course i played this morning has an hour glass green with the pin tucked in the front right. I caught my approach thin and ended up on the back right part of the green.

not even thinking about it, i took my 60 degree wedge out and hit a flop shot. apparently an 80 year old ranger was watching and gave me a good talking to. "he said-- i don't know who you think you are, but we don't do that around here." (I wanted to say, "chip well", but thought better of it). He then said, "I should throw you off this course now. We don't like you show off types here. And you guys (pointing to the others in my group) should have done something"

One of the guys I got paired with (who knew the guy) said something to him and then he walked away.

What's in the bag:

Wow!? "Show-off"? That seems strange..... what is wrong with hitting a flop shot? Now the real question, did you make the putt?

That's ridiculous. This ranger is probably to old to see and thought u were on the green... lol i odn't know what else to say to that. Elder golfers at the last course i had a membership at is the reason why i left as they treated you like poop. No respect for any teenager no matter how nice or how respectful you tried to be. That was the majority of them anyways, sad to leave there but just brings more courses to play at.

Sounds like one of the bitter old people I come across at my course all the time. That's a little extreme though

you hit a flop shot from the green which is legal and probably the right play, but the ranger was probably just concerned about you tearing up the greens. Most of the rangers I encounter take their jobs way to seriously and make threats that they dont have the authority to see through.

In my freestyle:
Driver: 10.5* G5 with UST V2
F.W. wood: 16* retro raylor with Aldila HM-40 Tour Gold
Irons: i5 3-pw. Stiff cs lite shafts
Wedges: 8620 51*, 56*, and 60* Putter: classics 1 34""Life is tough. It's tougher if you're stupid." -John Wayne

I would not blame someone for playing that type of shot when the architectural design of the hole makes it a viable option. I would simply hope he didn't tear up the green, or at least did his best to repair any damage.

i was on the green. hitting a flop shot from the green is legal. and necessary in this case.

It's sad that there are so many people out destroying courses that the ranger must assume you are up to no good when he sees you pull a LW out on a double green.

Oh I didn't read that you were on the green as well. That is a good play, but some people are very protective of the course.

But again, there is no rule against it.

taking a big divot out of a green, why not? everyone should take divots out of a plush carpet green

They will beat their swords into golf clubs and their spears into putters. Nation will not take up sword against nation, nor will they train for war anymore. Old Tom Morris 2:4

To be fair, if I saw some one taking big swings at a ball on the green in my course I would probably lay them out on the spot, without hesitation.

I know you didn't mean to but it could easily be interpreted as taking a divot out of the green, this sort of act of lack of respect for a golf course annoys me.

I am not an old geezer btw! I'm 17.

Now, in this conversation does 'on the green' actually mean 'on the fringe' or are we actually talking the short grass ?

Maybe the ranger should've waited to see if he actually took out a divot before he called him a show-off and threatened to kick him off the course

I'm siding with the ranger, Iv'e seen Lefty do it on occasion, but he's playing for 7 figures. I would have a problem with it if it was at my course or any course for that matter. Iv'e seen divots on greens, I thought they were the actions of a drunk a hole missing a putt.

Yep, I always hit my 60 degree perfect, no divots for me also.
