I'm in a bit of a bind. I broke my driver and I definitely can't afford to buy a nice one at the moment. I can probaby spend about $50 on something right now.

I've seen several Dunlop and Wilson drivers at Wal-mart and K-mart for this price.

Are these a total waste of money??? Or can they get me by for a bit until my finances change a little?

I realize they wouldn't be for sale at these places if they were great clubs, but has anyone had to use a "cheap driver" and had ok success with it??

Thanks

They'r enot a total waste of money. I had a Nike-knockoff driver that I bought at Kmart when I first started playing. It worked fine for me, until the head snapped off about a year after I bought it.

You may be better off buying a used Callaway Steelhead or Taylormade. You can probably pick one up for fairly cheap off of ebay or at Play it Again Sports (or whatever the the "used sports equipment" store equivalent is in PA)

There are some cheap, used Taylor Made r540's...my dad has one from the first seller linked above, got it in only a few days and he loves it. Doesn't want a new one.

If it were me, I would just not play for a few weeks, and the amount you save on green fees, balls, and/or cart fees, you could by a new driver. But even Dicks has some great deals on Adams drivers and a few others around $79

The local Play It Again Sports here will rob you blind, most of their used clubs are like 20 bucks off retail. And I mean they are used and abused for the most part.

What type of driver did you break? If it was a quality built club head you could get it reshafted for around $50. That way you'd have a better club head (and likely shaft) then what you'd pick up at a Walmart or K-Mart, for around the same price.

3balls.com - older drivers for a dirt cheap price that are better than anything you would buy at a mass merchandiser. I discovered that site when I was looking for a replacement for a lost iron.

I got my Tommy Armour Ayrtime at Sports Authority for $50, and I love it. I have hit it side by side with the a Burner and HiBore and I am not giving it up a thing. Drove my first par 4 green with it last week.

Here's a nice story - couple of lads in my society (brothers) are mad into their gear. One of them comes back from America with a new driver (TM CGB, with custom shafts, the works), and he's given his previous driver to his brother.

First tee conversation:

Brother one - hits one down the middle, 250, a long way and very straight for his handicap, says, "This is a hand-me-down from my brother, cost him €600 last year".

Brother two - hits one 260, dead straight, big drive for him, licking his lips and thinking money well spent , says, "€1000, worth every penny!"

Mate of my dads stands up, takes a practice swipe with a 3 wood, adresses the ball, digs it 270, runs past his playing partners balls, says, "3 wood, Aldi, €20!"

(Aldi being a cheap German store offering discount golf clubs for next to nothing!)

did notice the last time at wal-mart that they are now selling callaway balls

Check them out, I think the most important thing is the shaft. I bought the Wilson FatboyII driver last year it has a UST shaft on it. Im hitting it as far as other people I play with that use 500 drivers. I paid 100 bucks

I've never really thought about getting clubs at Wal-Mart. Maybe I will so I can save a little green.
Oh yeah, and I checked that website, 3balls.com. as meenman suggested and I might be getting some new irons there for $80 (even though they are knockoffs).

I was in a similar situation about 3 years ago. My driver got a noticeable crack and it just wouldn't produce the same feel, sound, and distance it had beforehand. It was then that I decided to NOT buy a new driver and focus on hitting 3-wood only off the tee for my long drives. Best decision I ever made. Not only am I better with my 3-wood than ever before, I was able to save up enough money to buy a shiny new driver when I felt the timing was right :)

I guess my only advice would be to use this as an opportunity to focus on your other woods and save up!

Yup, that's what I got, it is a great set. The driver and 3-wood are awesome, the irons are very good cavity back style. The hybrids are OK but the lie is a little funny and I don't hit them well, but it's probably my fault. The stand bag is great. The whole set for $150 was an awesome way to get started in golf and I wouldn't go any other way for your first season.
