i posted my frustration a couple weeks ago that i'm a 5.4 handicap and have never had a eagle before, well......
our club has two courses, one has a lot of water, the other is more tree lined with long rough and fast greens.......so my friends and i decided to play each front nine while taking a break to eat and go in the pool to deal with the heat.

Front nine: I got off to a rough start, 4 over through 7, approach a very difficult par five. every time i play, my goal is to break 40 on each nine, so i needed a birdie on 8, because i had never birdied 9 before. 8 is a very difficult hole to explain but i'll try my best. There's a "driving area" up to about 300yds, water left and long trees right. then, over the bridge going over the lake, there is another fairway that is perpendicular the the first fairway and going towards the green, which is at the end of this fairway (on the far right) last week, i figured out, accidentally, that if you fade it over the trees, there is a chance to get home in two, or at least leave a short pitch. however, the farther right you go, the more it requires a full carry over the lake.....and it is always into the wind. i hit the perfect drive, 285 with 227front, 245 to the pin (into the wind)....after considering my options (laying up would involve navigating around a bunker in the middle of the fairway...exactly where you would want to lay up) i decided that my best chance of birdie would be to go for it and at least bail out left into a different bunker. i hit what will be the best shot of my life....ever. one foot from the pin, tap in eagle. My first ever. Parred 9 for a respectable 38.

Next Nine- after a couple hours at the pool, i expected some rust, but i needed a good round because i have a ugsa junior amateur qualifier in two weeks on this course. Parred 1, as usual. Topped my second shot of the par five second, pulled my third left of the green into very thick rough. Flop shot over the bunkers into the hole for birdie. Bogeyed 3. Made a 30 footer for par on 4. Next came the par 5 fifth, one i probably average sub par on...but i usually consider it unreachable for me. however there is a big hill on the left side of the fairway that tends to be very dry. I caught the hill, a 301yd drive. Left me with the exact same ydge. as earlier 245. i hit a fairly solid 3w, didnt catch all of it, but it rolled up onto the front of the green. i had about 40-45 feet and as i walked up i jokingly remarked to my friend, "maybe i'll get another one". i saw the putt and then said to him, "yea.....there's no chance on this one, i'll just cozy it up there for my birdie". there was a big hill at the very end of the putt that i thought had a bit of a double-break to it. i had it about 20 inches outside the hole, and i figured a good putt would be within five feet hole high. i putted it and saw it turning on line to the hole, but i saw it slowing down at the hill and i thought....no way...it's gonna sit on the lip??!?! it sat there for a second and then rolled in....we went crazy, completely screaming....it was insane.....i went on to shoot an even par 36 after a very unlucky bounce off of a tree on 8......74 total with two eagles and a chip in birdie, what a day

Ive never made an eagle either (but Im not nearly as good as you) and am desperately trying to get one before the end of the summer. I had a 50 or so foot putt for one but 3 jacked it for par.

Congrats and I hope to join you in the "eagle club" soon.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.

    • I would not do anything until I met with an instructor and got your swing looked at. There are some obvious better club options out there though. Spend 50 bucks on a lesson, practice and start piecing together a bag that works for you. Enjoy the journey.
