Which major is more fun to watch on TV, the Masters or the US Open? So far this year it is the US Open because of the risk and reward that Torry Pines is presenting the players. Some guys are playing it safe and other are going for broke. Now that is golf. The way the Masters is set up now it is almost impossiable to come from way back by making a string of birdes with maybe a eagle in the mix. Plus this week you don't have the piped in song bird that is on a continues loop and the sappey music tht CBS plays over and over.

What I saw in the last two days is if you can keep it in the short grass you have a chance to post a low number. To me that is what championship golf is all about. So which major is more fun to watch?

So far it has been the US Open, but at the end of the year the British Open ('The Open') will have been the best to watch.

This is the type of comment that makes you the moron you are. The question was posed and nowhere did it say anything about the British. Isn't there a British golf forum you could join? To answer the question The "Open" U.S. Open that is, is my favorite every year.

The past several years for me, it's been the U.S. Open. Even though the scores seem to be roughly the same, the U.S. Open is cooler. Jim Nantz gets old fast (not that Johnny doesn't, but at least you want to listen to him to see how big of a tool he can be ), the U.S. Open features more "omygod" type shots (mostly of the "he whiffed it in the rough" variety)... and whatever.

It's very close, but I like watching the U.S. Open more. Heck, if they were options, I might even like watching the PGA and British more than the Masters the past several years.

I could not agree more. I like the Masters and the others but the Open is it for me. Maybe it is the traditional toughness where being over par is OK so guys tend to take more chances. We get to see some great golf shots because guys are trying to do more things they might not necessarily do at the Masters.

I have more fun watching the Masters for a couple of reasons that have nothing to do with Jim Nantz.
The course is a work of art, I've been watching it so long I feel like I've played the course and I have an idea what makes a shot good or bad.
Oh, the best part is the limit on commercials.

I learn more from watching the open but I don't know the courses and a lot of shots into the green baffle me.
I always play better the week of the Open.
I can't watch it without getting a whopping dose of priority - fairways and greens.

The only thing I like more about the Master is the limited interruptions (commercials, etc.)

But the U.S. Open seems more challenging so it's more fun to watch from a fan point of view.

Heck, if they were options, I might even like watching the PGA and British more than the Masters the past several years.

The PGA Championship is definitely an underrated event when it comes to the majors. The leaderboards are usually stacked with big names, and there are usually more birdies across the board. I always enjoy watching the season's final major.

As for the topic, the U.S. Open has always been my favorite major, so I have to pick it for sure. This year's start to the event is one of the best I can recall. There have been a good number of birdies, yet the scores are still creeping around even par. That's perfect! The Masters is second or third on my list, with The British Open coming in fourth for the majors. I enjoy them all, but that's how they rank for me.

I went with the US Open. Even though Augusta is beautiful, the change of scenery from year to year is good.

The US Open - there is great variety (it changes every year, and new courses are added to the rota too) - over here we have Sky Sports for the US Open and the commentry is brilliant, Butch Harmon & Peter Oosterhaus offer great insights and make it fun to watch. The Masters is on BBC but the coverage isn't as good.

However - i'm not liking these West Coast Majors - i'm going to bed at 2:30am every night! Last night, it was worth it though ;)

If I have to chose between those two I'd say The US open easily, that's pretty neat to have been able to watch golf yesterday coming back from work
but the one that I'm really looking for, and the only one that I was watching before I started playing is the Open, I remember getting up early to get to watch it in the morning.
my ranking would be
1 The Open
T2 US / PGA
4 Masters

I have to say I really enjoy watching the US Open. I like to watch the pros be challenged and see them really have to use their short game like the Open makes them.

If I was to attent a Major state-side, i'd go with the US Open first - the crowd are great! A little on the unreserved side perhaps (GET IN THE HOLE for a tee-shot on a par 5) but they are cheering everyone. I think it's great that Robert Dinwiddie (most European Tour fans won't have heard of him) get's a great cheer if he hits a 9 iron to 10 feet, or Oliver Wilson (who most Americans probably haven't heard of) sinks a 20 footer for par - the crowd are noisy but that adds to the atmosphere and the players just have to get over it. Like Goosen in 2004 when he was harrassed - he rose to the occasion and kicked everyones ass.

At the Masters you can't even run!

Definitely the Open (I'm American, the U.S. Open is "The Open" in my eyes). I like the change of scenery. Augusta is a great course obviously, but I do get a little bored with it.

US Open
British Open
Masters

Honestly both "Opens" are tied, but I'm a "hybrid southern redneck", so of course the US open gets top billing, really enjoy the history and courses of the "Open" also, ....St Andrews being the best golf tract in the world.

Masters has become very friggin boring, soften up the course and lets see some -8, or -10 winners, and some birdie roars.

I voted the Masters because I was comparing the tournaments I've watched throughout my entire life; the last few years, however, the US Open has been better. I'll take Rocco, Tiger, and Westwood competing down the stretch over Trevor Immelman's final round 75 any day.

In terms of TV, they're about equal: the commentators are better at Augusta, but Nantz's syrup drives me nuts.
