ok so I have been playing my best golf this year. Well up to yesterday. I went out in the morning warmed up, but while warming up hit a couple "S" words to the right like straight low and off to the right. So shook it off, Tee off on 1 and hit a aswome drive up the middle and was thinking oh ya this is gonna be another good round. Stood over the ball with an 8 iron to hit it on and "S" word off to the right? And from then on I only hit 2 iron shots the whole 18 without "S" wording them into the bush. Every other shot "Whack" to the right .got like 6 to 10 feet high and off 45 degrees into the rough or trees. Looked at the hosel and did see some ball marks I THINK. but what the hell couses this? I tried to adjust my swing all round and couldnt fix it. Serioulsy what causes this? Too close to ball? To steep of swing? Or mabye not staying down on the ball and hiting it with the bottom of blade? Need to be able to stop doing it if it happens again.

Too close to the ball would be my vote. If you're too close and you swing on your normal swing plane, the ball will be closer to the hosel and potentially contact it.

Are you hitting it off the toe? That would be you standing too far away from the ball, causing a low toe ball to the right.

(As opposed to the el hosels, which klaymon mentions. shanks are traditionally hosel shots, but most people will call a toe ball a shank as well.)

It's hard to tell w/o seeing your swing. You'll get lots of advice. Stand farther from the ball. Stand closer to the ball. Put a block behind the ball to get the clubhead to come from inside. You're coming from too much inside.

What I can tell you is I had a similar problem and I fixed it. I know what it's like when you're teeing off and there's a another tee box 45* right, with people on it and you're afraid of hitting them.

My shanks would occur when I tried to hit the ball a little further or when I was not comfortable and happened once or twice a round. The thing that frustrated me was that I hit quality shots the rest of the round.

The culprit was a combination of swing plane and the way I released my hands which I fixed by spending long hours on the range and the help of a couple of good instructors. What I was doing though wasn't only fixing the shank - it was correcting a couple of fundamental flaws in my swing I thought I didn't have. What I realized was that I didn't have a full understanding of the swing and it was trying to get rid of the shank that I learned more of what a correct golf swing is.

I haven't hit a shank in a long time, and if I do, I know why and can easily correct it, with hitting too much of a hook on the next shot.

Another tip I will give you is to try to hit the shank on purpose. Hit 3, 4 in a row and figure out that you're doing. Don't think about people watching you. Then do something other than what you did.

Ok sry for saying the "S" word. Edited and did 3 hail marrys to fix. And David I wish I could say that but never improved my lie once. Maybe I just shouldnt have had that Mochachino before the round!

Most shanks are caused by coming from the inside too much.

Unless they're really going off the toe, but I tend to believe most people are smart enough to know the difference.

Haha! Thats funny right there.

I agree with Iacas, the main cause is coming through the inside too much.

Glad it got figured out on its own!
