i hit these crazy moon balls. That look really good and come up a half a club short... usually on shorter irons I'm within a quarter of a club of what I want... But if I hit these moon balls with 2-7 iron I can come up as much as a half club short (Into the wind) My normal trajectory is very high... I can hit a 2-iron and get it to land soft with like no roll... (5-wood forget it)

I pose two questions, is there a such thing is too high? and should I bring my trajectory down?

Let the debate begin...

+4. Seems to be working ok.

But like...if you hit these moon balls all the time, what is it half a club short in comparison to?...isn't it kind of like just the distance you hit it? I'd say just accept(?) your distances as what they are...hone them to improve on your +4. and uh...if you don't hit them all the time then try to figure out what you're doing differently when they occur...maybe the ball is creeping forward?...coming down a little too steep?...

7.5 project x shafts and x flex wood shafts. gee you must have a fast swing speed. can you purchase shafts stiffer than that? thats would most people would suggest if you're hitting it too high, but i dunno what else you could do. sorry i couldn't help

The shafts you are using wouldn't be causing it, and seeing that you are a +4 handicap your swing is probably quite good. And if it is only losing half a club into the wind, I wouldn't be worrying about it.

I would say no there is nothing wrong, if you have the ability to hit the ball high you can hit it low, if you hit the ball low I doubt you will be able to hit it high.

As long as you can control the ball flight in the wind and shape the ball at will I see no problem with a high ball flight.

As long as you have shaped shots and punch shots in your arsenal, who cares if you hit high?

They make Rifle 7.5?
I used to hit too high too...but I switched shafts and moved to blades to get the ball down. Maybe your irons have too low center of mass?
Also, can't you vary your trajectory by moving the ball in your stance?

On shorter irons, you can move the ball back in your stance to lower the trajectory and gain some distance.

This is why a +4 shouldn't really ask these kinds of questions. They get answers like that... It may not necessarily even be wrong, but it's an 18 talking to a +4.

I'm also hoping you're an actual +4, and not a 4. You're better than scratch? If so, sorry, but 99.999% of the people who could respond to you here aren't within three strokes of you, so who cares what they say, particularly since none of us have seen you play?

The only time I can think of when hitting the ball really high like that would be a bad thing is if its windy.
Obviously, the higher the trajectory is, the more time the wind has to alter its flightpath. If you find yourself coming up half a club short, perhaps you should try going with the next higher club and choking down on it a bit.
That would get you about half a club longer in distance and it should be right on the money.

I would also try moving ball back in stance and try to keep your left wrist from facing sky during follow through.

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
