I am 15 and i am really serious about the game. I hit my drives straight all day, straight but not as long as some of my buddies. Im 6'2 and my swing speed is high, i hit all my other clubs farther than them, except driver. My driver goes really really high and then lands in the fairway and rolls like 5 feet, it goes so high theres usually a ball mark in the fairway. I've been to two pros, and they can't agree on the problem. One says my swing path has the club face tilted up, leading to a high launch angle, and the other says i have the wrong shaft or wrong loft. The second pro is much more reliable, i just want to get some tips on wat i could be doing wrong before i get a new driver.

i've had this problem a lot with high (but straight) drives that look and feel good but die and fall short with little roll. I've found that my problem was that i was hitting the driver too much like an iron. A couple things to focus on that are different with a driver are keeping your weight back behind the ball through impact instead of transferring through to the front foot like you would with irons. Also make sure that you are making contact after the bottom of the swing. You should hit the ball with the driver on the upswing. A way to help with this would be to put the ball further up in your stance. These are what helped for me, good luck!

The issue seems to be high backspin being imparted on the ball. Ideal backspin is about 1000rpm's, and under or about 2000 is really good as well. What is likely happening is that you are at over 3000rpm's. Get on a launch monitor somewhere (places like Edwin Watts Golf do it for free if you tell them you are looking for clubs) and check out those numbers. I notice that you are 10.5degrees. That is great. Most people go down to 9 or 9.5 because they have a high swing speed. Without seeing your swing speed...being that you classify yourself as having a "high swing speed".. it's likely that you are at about 100mph....however with your 6'2 frame..you can easily be 10-20mph about that. That swing speed can get you at 300yards. However, the backspin that you are likely imparting can easily rob you 75 yards.

To solve this...talk to the people fitting you for clubs at the stores. Look around, and you can usually find someone who knows what they are talking about. I notice you are hitting the Sasquatch. That club has a shallow face which is intended to get you the super high trajectory. This can be playing into your issue. I suggest you get to the store and have them test you for multiple club heads. A good place will have you go through everything. Taylormades, Cobras, Callaways...they should test everything on you. The club face can significantly alter your ball trajectory on miss hits (of course if you hit everything on the screws, itts gonna fly true...but even with pros..that doesnt always happen...and if you are an amateur..this likely happens more often then you'd like it to).

But yea, from what i've seen....most often the case for people who have a sound swing (im making a big assumption here that you have a pretty sound swing) is that they are ill-fitted for their club. It may actually be your club that is creating high spin on your miss hits

oh yea. this is an edit..i notice you have a Regular Flex. If you are at 100mph like im guessing...you need at least a stiff shaft. Your shaft is extraordinarily important in your club if you are hitting it well (it wont fix your swing, but if your swing is sound...it'll give you the flight you are likely looking for)

There may well be a swing fault, but you have the wrong shaft in your driver.

End of thread.

Ideal backspin is not 1000. Time to break out this chart again, I guess:

Listen to jay_B. try a 9.5* loft and a stiff flex and that would get your ball flight down.

    • Both @DaveP043 and I play in our interclub matches every year, and have been team Captains as well.  There are always a few courses, mine is one, that win a lot of matches (we've won twice in the last 7 years), and we've been labeled as sandbaggers.  However, I really think that our course was rated too low (our greens just never seemed to get factored in enough), and thus our Handicaps were always a stroke or maybe 2 above, what they would've been if the course was rated higher.  And then when we went and played other courses, their slope and rating were much higher than ours, and sometimes I would get a 2 or 3 stroke bump on top of that.  It was definitely an advantage.  However, this past year, our course was rated again and the slope has gone up, so we'll see if we continue to have the same benefit.  Season starts this Sunday for us.

    • I would not do anything until I met with an instructor and got your swing looked at. There are some obvious better club options out there though. Spend 50 bucks on a lesson, practice and start piecing together a bag that works for you. Enjoy the journey.
