So I'm working on getting my takeaway more "on plane," meaning not so flat and inside - I used to be worse than the video below - and it's getting better. The takeaway practice move that looks like Mike Weir's move is the plane I feel like I'm on , but the real swing is more inside. So my takeaway looks more like an arc than a plane, but the downswing seems to be fine.

Any thoughts on drills, etc., to keep my hands further outside in the first third of my takeaway?

Use your body to take the club back. By doing this you get your entire body in sync on the back swing.This will help you lenghten your backswing and keep it from going so far inside.

Here is what i used to correct the same flaw in my swing (i used to have a very flat swing too)

a good drill to fix this.....requires about a 8" piece of 2x4, with one end cut to about a 45º angle. pick a target line, place a ball directly in front of the piece of wood (cut side should be towards the ball, about 1" away), and using an 8 iron, take the club back and make a swing at the ball. the wood should slide straight back very smoothly. if you flip it back, or it flies away very fast, you are using your arms and hands to take away the club. if you do it properly with the shoulders, it should slide very smoothly. good drill that i use at the range all the time!

Haha "pulled it"... jokester! Try taking some weight off your left foot so your not so into the swing right away. Stay back on it, and then let your body do the work.

I take it away inside as well. It's harder than I thought to correct. Because taking it on the proper plane feels like I'm taking it waaay outside, even though I'm not.

It seems that even your waggle is very inside, and then the actual take away is even more inside.

Try this drill, taking your normal grip but take your backswing with only your left hand, still have your right hand on the club but don't use it during your backswing.

This should get you drawing the club back straighter instead of you pulling the club inside with your right hand.

      I have a putting mat in my office. It's 9 feet long almost 4 feet wide. I've drawn a line down it in order to practice hitting my line and stuff. Works fine for what it is.  While I'm not a fan of lining up a line on my golfball for every putt. I think for practice sessions it can have a lot of value.  To me this product makes sense.       Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.

      Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group.
