How long did it take you to break 100?

I have been playing once a week, sometimes twice a week since the first of May 2008 and I finally broke 100 last week. This was an honest to goodness 98. No mulligans no re-dos, nothing. I was very pleased with myself and I was just curious if anyone has done it faster or if this is about the norm.

As far as my history with golf, I have never played a round of golf before May, and I had only been to the driving range 20 or 30 times or so in my 28 years.

i shot the same score after 10 rounds. i was a lucky score..i wasn't consistent..i just got crazy lucky with bounces off of trees, cart path, etc. i skulled shots that somehow landed on the green. i lost like 3 balls that day but still pulled it off. i finally broke 100, but it was UGLY! my dad had a WTF look on his face the entire round

It took me a while.
Then, I just started breaking scoring barriers every few rounds.
I'm in the mid 70's now.
I just worked so hard once I broke 100.

If you are having trouble breaking a scoring hump, go play a shorter or easier course, possibly from the ladies tees (look for something in the 5,000-5,500 yd range). yeah, yeah, yeah, you don't want to play from the ladies tees, but it will help.

you will learn to make pars, scramble for bogeys, and score better. You will experience the feeling of shooting a low round, and mentally improve.

every couple of months, i play an executive course or even from the ladies tees, just to give myself a boost in terms of scoring mentality. it frequently carries over to my next few rounds from the back tees. get in the habit of making birdies (or pars), and putting together a good round.

don't be the macho man who is too tought to try this. it will help you break scoring barriers. you might be embarrassed, but if you can't suck up your pride in order to help your game then you do not deserve to improve. check the ego at the door when trying to get better at golf.

I am sorry but I do not see how artificially inflating your ego is going to help your game. I definitely can not see how shooting from ladies tees to get a better score makes you a better golfer. - If someone needs to shoot from ladies tees so they can brag about breaking a milestone it may be time to take up a game that doesnt require skill (like bowling)

I shot one of my lowest scores ever yesterday - too bad the course had such a wimpy rating it is not even good enough for a top 10 score as far as my handicap goes. I say play the tougher courses - it will only help you when you play an easier one. I know I learn more having to play surrounded by bunkers, water and trees than I would if I played on a course that was full of 280 yard par 4s that are all straight and BORING!

My first round ever was an 89. But now that I really know how to play (and keep score), that round was probably closer to 109 lol

So a real sub 100 round probably took me 2 months of playing twice per week.

It is not "artificially inflating your ego..."

It is learning how to score. Learning how to make pars and bogeys and even birdies. It is learning how to get around a course in fewer strokes than you are accustomed to.

If you don't believe me, then don't do it. It works for me. And like I said, it is not artifically inflating my ego.

When I was having trouble breaking 80, I played an executing course at about 5300 yards a few times. At first, I actually shot around an 81/82, and was pissed, as that was the same as my scores on 6000+ courses. But that also let me know that it wasn't the course, it was my approach that needed work, and after a couple of rounds, I fired a few lower 70's rounds, going under par for 9 holes a couple of times. Then when I got back on the 6,500 yd course, that scoring mentality carried over, I was thinking birdie more often than thinking saving bogey, and found myself breaking 80 with more consistency.

If you don't believe me, that's your choice. But until you try it, don't say it is wrong. It works.

Our local college team used to practice once every week or every other week from the red tees. I was confused, asked the coach what that was about, and he told me it was to teach the players how to shoot in the 60's. That's where I got the idea.

Also, when you do this, your score might not even drop your first round or two. You might be making the same stupid mistakes on the short course as you are on the longer courses. But after a couple of rounds, you might learn to minimize those mistakes, and those lessons will carry over on the longer course.

Dave Pelz also suggests playing "short courses". I guess he's wrong too.

Playing hard courses can help too. But don't discount the value of developing a scoring mentality on an easier course.

Also, the problem with playing the harder courses is that you learn to be pleased saving bogeys. Bogeys are good scores.

But then on your regular course, you continue to simply save bogeys. But you haven't learned to make pars and birdies.

I play courses of all sorts of ratings, hard and easy, and they both have their virtues. But when trying to get over a scoring hump, I will spend some time on the easier courses and learn to get to that number.

And like you said, the course/rating reflects the difference, so you aren't stroking your ege (you usually cannot even post those executive course scores).

Executive courses I can understand. Playing the ladies tees so you can have 220 yard par 4s and 105 yd par 3s? I can practice plenty of 100 yard shots during my normal course of play. Breaking 80,90,100 from womens tees does not mean you have broken that scoring barrier.

Pretty far from the norm, I'd say. To break 100, having never played the game before, after only 8 to 10 rounds is pretty astounding. Congratulations.

It took me almost 2 years, playing considerably more often than you have. But then again I never played a lot of sports, and am not naturally coordinated.

I think I broke 100 when I was around 9 or 10 years old. Started playing golf seriously at 7 or 8.

congrads on those who broke 100 so quickly; it took me a full season (9 months).

It took me 6 months from the first time I held a club. I thought that was fast, but looks like a lot of you have me beat.

After hitting that milestone I was hoping to break 90 within a year, but only got down to a 90. It's now 13 months and counting...

This is my second summer playing seriously and I still a haven't done it. The closest I've come is 102 but I have shot a front nine 49 playing after work.

I am playing quite a bit this summer so I'm hoping to post a similar accomplishment soon.

Meenman,

You are missing Sandman's point. He isn't saying that breaking a scoring barrier on the short course is official. It just helps your thinking when you go back to the longer/harder courses so you are better prepaired to break the scoring barrier there. He has been pretty direct about what he is trying to say. I suggest you re-read his posts.

    • You all are right, its not that big of an issue, I'll leave it alone, especially after looking at that picture of Tigers beat up putter. But I also noticed the small circle worn on the sweet-spot where he hits it every time, I definitely don't have one of those. Thanks for the replies
    • Committing to one brand of ball this year - Snell MTB Prime X, the 5 doz. pack. Like how they perform for me. At $18/doz., can live with cover scuffing. Iron regripping with GolfPrice MCC+4 Teams std. in red/navy. May be retiring Odyssey Dual Force after 30 yrs. Seems like I can't get it to the hole anymore. Kind of light and has lots of toe hang. My reg. group's hounding finally wore me down.    From Callaway preowned - trying out the Odyssey Tri-Hot 5K in double wide (less toe hang) and triple wide (face balanced). Both also noticeably heavier...we shall see.
    • WOW, it looks like he has been hitting stones with that putter to put all of those nicks into it.  I can't see how a ball would cause many those dings.
