Ok just got new irons a couple weeks ago, and just this week got the new Nike driver, and not more than 8 hours later a friend of mine walking with her 14 year old son says to me" oh now my son can try you driver to see if he likes it!" Like geesh why do I want to take the chance of someone making a ding or even worse on my new 500 dollar investment? Why cant people just go demo a driver if they want to try one. I hate being an ass about it or looking selfish but that's alot of money to risk in my opinion

Driver - SQ SUMO2 9.5 stiff
3 Wood - SQ SUMO2 15* stiff
Hybrid SQ SUMO2 20* stiff
Irons - CCi steel stiff
Wedge - 56*Wedge - Knight 60*Putter - ITraxBall - platinum+Black but soon to be switching to pr0v1 SG 2.5

A driver is a $500 asset, not an investment. As such I'm not keen on anybody messing with mine, but I have the same issue you do... I hate to say no.

I never ever ask to use other people's clubs because I know that this is a touchy issue.

I hate letting people try my sumo also. I guess they just want to try it because it is square. The only person I have ever tried their clubs is my best friend and that is allowed

Back in high school my friend used my Biggest Big Bertha (remember those?? LOL).. He snapped the head right off with a drive!! Needless to say Callaway took care of it but I dont care if my friends use my equipment.

Was it a clean shot, or did he hit the ground or something? The reason I ask is, my starter set (Acuity) had the head come off the 5 wood. I was using it off the tee (could not use driver @ the time), took a swing and the hear shot right off. Without me hitting the ground or anything!

Funny thing was, the clubhead flew further than the ball!

Is a $500 club nessacary for a 14 year old? You'd have to be crazy if you think I would let someone use a $500 club that I just bought and hadn't had the chance to give it a proper break in. Either you live in a ritzy neighborhood or those parents really like that kid. I know my parents would not have bought me a $500 driver at 14 mostly because we didn't have that kind of money to just throw around but also because I was just starting out. I wonder what kind of irons he's playing?

In my Pro-Walker stand bag:

If the kid is a scratch golfer at age 14 or maybe even better, then in that case a $500 driver would be an investment for the parents. :)

Oh man, I was playing with a friend and he had just snapped his bargain basement driver at the shaft. I mean he hit down on the ball like he was hitting a wedge and tore up a real beaver pelt. He finished the follow through with just the shaft and the head launched into some tall grass in front of the teeing area.

He then asks for someone to loan him a driver. Everyone's busy laughing at him, and he looks at me, the only serious golfer in the group and asks to use my R7 460. Now it isn't brand spanking new, but it is still a pretty nice driver. After making some exasperated pointing gestures at my buddy's RAM driver, I give in. This guy is a real hack, but he's my friend so what could I say? I just gritted my teeth and closed my eyes while he teed off.

Personally, I don't care if a friend asks to hit a couple of balls with any of my clubs... have at it and welcome. First, friendship is more important than a golf club, any golf club. And second, how is his hitting a couple of balls going to be more likely to damage it than doing so myself? If I do have any doubts, then I would be there to see what is happening. And no, I'm not just giving my new driver to a teenager and let him go off with it. But if he wants to try it out when I'm around, that's going to be ok by me.

I especially question this since 95% of the golfers I ever see on golf forums don't keep a driver longer than about 6 months anyway.... how can you become so attached to it that you can't let a friend try it out? In a couple of months you will probably be trying to get him to buy it from you so you can get the new latest and greatest.

I guess it's true what the world says about Americans... our "stuff" is more important to us than the people around us.

Good point. In that case yes I'd let them try it. But I wouldn't let just anyone use it friend or not.

I love my 4 year old cousin dearly, but no matter how much it would make his day, I won't let him drive my car. :)

I too have had people ask to try out my clubs ... only friends rather than strangers.

BUT, I tell them that if they break it, they just bought it :)

Reminds me of a story someone told about going to a major league baseball game.

This was a middle aged guy who had been going to ball games all his life. For the first time ever he caught a foul ball. He was excited as heck. Then some woman comes up to him and asks if she can have the ball so she can give it to her 8 year old son. The guy looked at her like she was crazy, and she got mad and huffy about "a grown man wouldn't give a ball to a child."

He took the ball home and still has it.

The two morals of the story: 1-some people don't get it, and 2-for some women the world revolves around their children, so no sacrifice (whether it is your once-in-a-lifetime foul ball cath or $500 driver) is too big when their child is invovled.

I've had my driver for 1 year 1 month. Will at least keep it through this year.

I let my friends and family hit my clubs if they ask. I even offer sometimes. None are really hacks though. I probably wouldn't if I just watched a friend bury a driver into the ground and snap the head off.

Friendship is more important than golf clubs, that's true. But it goes both ways - if someone won't be your friend because you won't let them hit your driver, are they really a friend? If they break your $500 driver, will you be mad at them and expect them to replace it? Or just say 'awe shucks, no biggy.'

If they offer to buy the club if they break it at new prices (not off of e-bay, and they have to be able to afford it), then no problem - hit away. Otherwise, no way. It's a simple policy - nobody hits my driver, and I don't hit anybody else's. I see it as saving a friendship, not ruining one.

I always let my buddies use my stuff. No problem. However, it comes with the unspoken rule: "You break it, you buy me a new one"

I live by the rule "If I can't afford to replace it new, I don't borrow it"

I don't really have the problem with the clubs, no one want's to hit them...But I did just buy a Nike Sumo Sq, 8.5, X flex from TGW, (The older, but conforming with stamp model) the one that sounds like a dumpster exploding when you hit it for $175. I am sure someone will want to try it, no problem....mess it up and your buying a new one.

    • I am a huge numbers guy and if a number can be applied to something, I want to know what it is.  Even in golf, I will pace off short chips as I have a 10 yard, 20 yard, and 30 yard shot whereas I take the club back a certain distance for each.  I have heard the comparison to basketball players that they do not know their exact distance to the basket, they just use their eye sight and adjust which I know a lot of golfers do as well when within a certain distance to the pin.  My question is, what is that distance for you?  I was at the range today and was hitting wayward  balls to a flag that I had no idea what it's exact distance was, I estimate that I was at times as close as 40 yards and as far away as 70 yards.  I was amazed at how accurate I was having not known the distance to the flag.  Temps me to not use my range finder within say 70 yards and go by look and feel.  What say you?
    • Well, it was yesterday but I shot an 88 at Lake Park GC in Lewisville, TX.
    • PXG Orlando, other locations I'm sure its the same, offers a full bag fitting for 25 bucks which is applied to purchase if you are a veteran or active duty, etc. Unfortunately I like my Titleist's.
    • Latest rumor is Clarkson, May and Hammond will have a new team on LIV.
    • That's not just sandbagging, that's cheating. Under Rule 3.3 for posting most likely scores, for example if there was a 2 foot putt for par, one can only take one extra stroke from what they lie, meaning par in that instance, not bogey. I didn't check the other instances but you can.
