Today I whacked a ton of balls at the range. I got frustrated and came home. Reading some threads here on the board I was reminded of Ron Del Barrio's 'passive swing' technique and went back to the range after lunch to try it out. I liked it with the irons - including the head turn down the line on the downswing to help turn the body through the ball - and went to give it a try with the driver. On the second strike, the shaft snapped right at the hosel and the head spun down the range like a frisbee. I have no idea where I hit the ball or where the ball went, but it felt like a good strike.

I guess I'll to on Saturday to get fitted for a driver, and hopefully take advantage of a 4th of July weekend sale. I had been planning on waiting until next year to get fitted for any clubs, but I guess now I have an excuse to do it now! Now the big question is whether to go whole hot and get fitted for a 3-wood and a new hybrid while I'm at it, too. It's a 100 mile drive to the nearest store with a launch monitor, so I might end up taking advantage of the time to buy more than just a driver.

What ever you decide to do, don't try to rush the fitting or do too much in one day, or you might as well give your money to me. I'm sure the sales associate or if your really, really, really lucky - golf pro - will be glad to keep working with you as the cash register rings. That being said, I wouldn't imagine there would be a lot of fitting involved in a fairway wood or hybrid selection after your general swing characteristic are evaluted in a driver fitting. Mainly you'll be looking at your yardage gaps, preferably on a range. Buy American on the 4th and play all day on the 5th!

A 100-mile driver? Dang!

Here's what to do - do not rush it. Go get fitted for a driver, but while you're doing that ask the stats of the launch monitor (your avg. swing speed, side spin, launch angle, etc) and listen to what the fitting pro has to say/recommend. Take a note if you had to. I'll tell you why it's for later. Secondly, ask to hit some woods with different head and shafts combinations. There should be plenty laying around if it's a fitting center. Whenever you hit one of them and felt good about it (also the launch monitor), take note the specs of the shaft if it's the shaft or the head club if it's the head club. If it's both then you have a winner. I'm sure if you intend to and eventually purchase the driver from that fitting pro, he'd gladly let you test some woods. With that note of your swing stats you got there and the shaft and head choices you've tried, you could actually go anywhere and get the same thing with the benefit of better deals. That's the blueprint of your swing at that time. Later on when you've improved your swing speed for instance, you definitely need to get fitted again and of course would give new blueprint. In other words, you need not to worry about 100-mile drive anymore to go to one place with launch monitor. Just present your blueprint to a clubmaker and a good one will know what to do. Hope it helps.

    • You might want to try a can of Bar Keepers Friend. Yes, it is abrasive, so just wet a sponge and dab it on. It has oxalic acid (no bleach like "Comet" kitchen cleanser), and it works wonders on stainless steel and other metals. Try it on a small area first to see what happens.
    • Fair   My uneducated thought: the big miss is the penalty area. If you want to optimize score, missing into the bunker (likely 5) is better than missing right into the penalty (possible 6). With that, your strategy seems sound and if you hit a committed shot, you get a bunker 5% of the time, take your medicine and hopefully get a putt for par but accept bogey. You may find yourself in a penalty situation 2-3% of the time and accept the associated outcome. The vast majority of the time though you are giving yourself a good approach shot into the green.
    • I walk 30 mins a day on my lunch break. It is not very intense (since i dont want to get sweaty in my work clothes), so just a touch above leisurely. 3 days a week I walk on the treadmill for 60 mins. I alternate the incline from 4 to 10 for a couple minutes, once every ten minutes. I lift my kettlebells nearly everyday. I have a couple complex routines. I find just 15 minutes and my heart rates is elevated
