Just curious if anyone has played any courses in Kansas, and if so what were their thoughts?

Well, being a high school golfer from Kansas, I think there are some hidden gems in the state. Sure, we don't have many notorious/famous courses (excluding Prairie Dunes), but there are many great courses (and green fees are usually pretty low around here). Some of my faves: Colbert Hills, Rolling Meadows, Sand Creek, Stagg Hill.

depends where at in kansas, i lived in overland park(eastern kansas) I belonged to Loch Lloyd Country Club which is very nice

Well....you have Flint Hills listed as your home course. I was lucky enough to get to play it last year & it's flat out the best I've ever played. Including Prairie Dunes (though that was about 18 years ago).

Just took a trip to Garden City with some buddies a couple weeks ago & played Buffalo Dunes & Southwind. What beautiful courses in a part of the state where you wouldn't expect it.

I think there's a lot of good golf in this state...especially for the price.

What's in my bag:

hey...I played Colbert Hills in mid July and it was perfect shape...greens quick and few players...get there in middle of week

I am playing Tomahawk Hills this afternoon (just nine holes today) in Shawnee Mission. It's been years since I played it; its signature holes are 9 and 18 (Par 3's off the top of a hill, about 150-170 yards). It's kinda tight fairways but the slope is about 118 so it's not too difficult. Hope I break 45!

Sunflower Hills is the course I learned on in the late 70s; it's LONG (6,600 from the middle tees, 7,000 from the back, I think the front tees are ove 6,000 also) with a slope in the upper 120s. It's located in Bonner Springs. Was kept up pretty good back when I played all the time; it's hard for me to say right now since I just started golfing again after 5 years off.

Northwestern 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-wood;
Goldwin AVDP Irons (5-10 plus PW);
U.S. Golf 60 degree wedge;
See-More Putter; Bushnell Yardage Pro 1000 Rangefinder;Golflogix GPS.

They've all been mentioned but I've played a few good courses in my home state this year. I'd rank the courses in this order reguarldess of what i shot. If I could I'd play either of my top two here everyday...
1.Prairie Dunes (Hutchinson - no brainer, best in the state by far)
2.Colbert Hills (Manhattan AMAZING public course, best public course in the state hands down, coupons online for great deals)
3.Buffalo Dunes (Garden City - always been highly ranked among municipal/public courses)
4.Alvamar Public (Lawrence - tough course, they redid the greens acouple of years ago and they are stellar now. FAST, but hold the ball great.)
5.Prairie Highlands (Olathe - public, but pricey)
I didn't mention South Wind (G.C.) because I haven't played it this year, but it would be ranked third for me . . .

You guys need to play Cottonwood Hills, which is also by Hutchinson. I am sure it will be on your list after you play it.

I played there (Cottonwood Hills) when it first opened. I was WAY impressed. Flint HIlls National would also be upthere, but I haven't played it this year! Kansas does have some great golf!

GREAT THREAD! I was recently talking to someone about K.C. being an underrated golf destination for the $. Of course in K.C. most of my favorites bounce around both Kansas and Missouri, but staying in Kansas I like the following... These are ranked by combination of value and quality.
(Private courses excluded)

1) Sycamore Ridge - Overall great course
2) Colbert Hills - Love the challenge, can really play long
3) Ironhorse - Mature course, good service
4) Southwind - Took advantage of what little SW Kansas land has to offer
5) Deer Creek - A couple of holes push this course up into the top 5

Might as well include the private courses...

1) Wolf Creek
2) Shadow Glen
3) Prairie Dunes
4) Alvamar
5) LionsGate

Thinking about courses back in Kansas makes me want to start a thread to give credit to some of the great Missouri courses as well. If there isn't a thread started, I'll start one, but now I have to leave to go play in the Colorado rain, Pelican Lakes.

Traveling to Hutchinson tomorrow for an evening dinner party; but I'm getting there at noonish. I might get to play at Praire Dunes (if I can get on during 'ladies day'). If I can't get on I'll go the the matinee of The Dark Knight, whish I still haven't seen. Let's hope that by this time tomorrow I STILL haven't seen the Batman flick.

Kansas City golf, that's sort of Kansas.

Heritage Park, challenging 72.6/131/6876 from the back, attractive, and always in decent shape when I have been there. Sister course to Tomahawk Hills which Smallville already mentioned.

Adams Pointe, (Blue Springs MO) moderately challenging but I didn't play the back, very attractive, well kept but last time I was on it they were starting reconstruction on fairways and I haven't seen it since.

Country Creek - Rock, (Pleasant Hill MO) basic straight forward golf but the people there have always treated me great and the price is attractive. Two other courses here but I have only played the Quarry once and never played Hoot's Hollow.

Overland Park, fun but don't expect a stern test of golf.

St. Andrews, run away!

5. Falcon Lakes
6. Dub's Dread

Are you guys into the value courses? I haven't played any courses yet cause I'm just getting back into golf, but I was looking around and I saw a course in De Soto, KS called Oak Country Golf Club. Has a par 3 island green 18th hole. Something I wanna try when I get the chance.

      Again, I’m not an expert so take it with a grain of salt My question is whether laying back even further becomes too conservative and that strategy is suboptimal as a result? Essentially what’s the cost of guaranteed longer second shot vs the x% risk for hitting the bunker? I think the optimal way to answer the question is looking at strokes gained, in consideration of the hazards and penalties, and picking the strategy that maximizes SG off the tee. I’ve seen some apps that do this but I’m not sure how accurate they are.   And again, asking all this so I can learn what I should be doing in these situations rather than questioning your approach Bill. I would give an example of the course I’m joining this year where I plan to aim at the bunker, but I don’t want to take over your swing thread any further!

      What @DeadMan said. From the satellite it looks like there's tall grass to the right, long of the fairway post-dog-leg. But left it just looks like regular rough all the way to the neighboring tee boxes. If that's true I'm aiming left edge of the green and bombs away every time, hoping for a 30-70 yard up and down opportunity.

      What's the case against blasting a driver at the green? I'm guessing it puts the penalty area/fescue too much into play, but if that's just standard rough around the green, there would be a good case for it. If it's not driver, then I agree with your approach. The one thing I would add is to shade your aim towards the bunkers vs. center of the fairway. Hitting out of a bunker is (marginally) better than a penalty drop.

      Yes, if you are gonna layup, then layup. No need to nickle and dime a few extra yards and bring bunker back into play.
