I have a couple problem yardages.

80-100
My insanely high trajectory causes my SW to top off at 75-80 yards or so. I hit it straight and can stop it fairly well, but when I try to move it back in my stance or muscle it farther than normal it usually results in a line drive that goes screaming over the green at about 300 mph and 4 feet off the ground. So when I am between my SW and PW (I have tried a 52* and only got a few yards more than my 56*), I am taking half or three quarter swings with my PW because it is just lower risk for me. Occasionally I come up short or go well over, but it is a safer play than trying to get more out of my SW than my swing currently allows.

160-170
I hit the best 5 iron of my life on Thursday and it was probably 165 on the nuts. It is rare for me to hit it that well, though, and I usually try to avoid leaving myself in this yardage whenever possible. My 21* hybrid is a consistent 175-180, but it rolls a ton if I am taking into the green and it is also a lot harder for me to shorten my swing to take off yardage with it (I just started using it a couple weeks ago, still getting used to the feel), so I am usually trying to muscle my 5 iron if I don't have a hazard to clear, but often times I will just lay up a 6 or 7 iron knowing that I will have something more manageable in the end.

So what are your trouble yardages and what do you do when you are between clubs? Take something off or try to muscle it?

Mine is 100-130. I can get my 54 up to 100 now but then I start having the same problem as you, and my PW tops out at 130. So just to play safe I choke up on the PW because it's the safest play.

If I were you, I'd think about a 51 or something like that.

When I am between clubs, I will almost always go with more club and hit is smooth rather than try to hit less club hard. I find that bad things happen when I go after the ball hard. That's just what I am comfortable with.

Ditto the above, although obviously weather (wind) conditions also dictate my club selection. I almost always choke down with more club for added control and feel.

My problem yardage is always 115 -- to much for my gap and too little for my wedge....

Another agreement here. My "trouble" yardage range is 105-120, in between my GW and PW, for some reason gives me problems.

If I was in between clubs, I would play the club based off of pin placement. Let's say I was 151 yards to a front pin. A normal, well struck 8-iron is probably in the 147-8 range for me. I would step on the 8 because with a little more distance and added spin from hitting it harder, it would give me a better shot of getting it close and stopping it. If I hit a really smooth 7, I might get the right distance but there would be less spin and a slightly lower trajectory and it might go past. For middle and back pin placements, I would probably take the higher club.

I go with more club. It's better to be longer and putting on the green than being short and getting pissed off.

I always consider pin placement, shelves on the green, etc., when considering those in-between club lengths. I would rather be short on a front pin placement below the hole than over the back or on top of a shelf.

I do generally agree that planning on "hitting it for all I got" can cause problems.

Then again, the best laid plans....

I take a few things into consideration.

1. Elevation - is the green downhilll, mostly level, or uphill.
2. Wind - where is the wind? how strong?
3. Pin placement - back, forward, or center?
4. How hard do I want to swing?

I usually take the longer club and choke down and inch. Works real well. More control as well that way.

i have a belief that most, if not all golfers, always handicap themselves by not going with a stronger club. I'll always tell myself,

"Go with the 8 iron for this 175 yarder. You got it!"

And then, to no real suprise at all, i come up 12 yards short!

Unless you hit the club PERFECTLY, you're prob. not going to get your desired result. Thus, when you're between clubs, i say to go with the stronger of the two unless there's a severe hazard past your target.

I take a few things into consideration.

Yeah, one definitely has to weigh these variables. Along with the basic of, "how do I feel/how have I been hitting the ball today?" Just this afternoon for instance, I faced a shot were my actual yardage was 158, it was an uphill shot so I figured an extra 10 yards worth (168), and there was a bunker I had to carry. No wind. I was feeling frisky, plus I had my new clubs in hand, so I figured I'd try something nuts and hit a bit of a trap/draw 7 iron. It worked, I hit the perfect shot, just like I saw happen in my mind. I had about 11 feet for eagle, and made the putt (that's the best part). In the past I probably would have tried a high fade of a 6 iron. Just for giggles I took out an extra ball and hit just that, which I nearly holed. My ball with that shot ended up 6 inches past the hole. I think feel has a lot to do with in-between shots as well.

Conditions and such obviously will obviously be a factor in club choice. The reason I brought this up is because of the 5 iron shot I previously mentioned. I had 165 to the front pin position with a slope down to a wash creek in the front of the green. It is a narrow and wide green, though, so I knew my hybrid would more than likely carry over and into the traps or pine trees behind the green, so I took my chances with the wash creek and swung out of my shoes and hit a perfect shot.

1) I can aim left and open my club face and use my regular swing

2) I can take a full easy swing which I am find more accurate recently.

3) I like to try a 3/4 swing

4) I like to try a knock down swing

As most have said, I usually go with the longer club. I have figured out a few ways to adjust a club to get the right distance. (note: when I do it, a 3/4 grip is choking down about an inch, 1/2 grip is choking down about 2 inches)

For me, a 3/4 grip, 3/4 swing is about equal to a club down, e.g. 8 to a 9. So if I am in between an 8 and a 9 (let's say 140 yards), I might hit a 3/4 grip normal swing 8-iron. Or a full grip, 3/4 swing if I want to change the ball flight. If the ball is in deep rough and I know I need to take a hard swing, I might even use a 1/2 grip, full swing 7-iron. That way I can really get after the ball on contact, but the choking down takes off some distance. You can make a lot of adjustments to any club by gripping down and changing the swing strength.

It takes a lot of trial and error, and practice, to figure out what to hit when you are between clubs. Find out what works best for you and refine it as best as you can.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I have the same problem with scenario 1. I'm hoping to solve it with a gap wedge especially since my PW is 48* and my SW is 56* so there is a big gap there.

Scenario 2 I just hit my 5 iron. My 7 iron is pretty consistently 150-155 and my 5 iron 165-170. I hit my 4 hybrid a bit further than that, should have gone to a 5 instead.

My trouple yardage is anything under 250. That's when things start to get real tricky....
If anything....I take more club. Bad things happen when I try to over swing...
