So I've managed to become an equipment ho lately and have a never ending revolving door for drivers right now. Tried the R5 Dual first, then bought a 3DX square which I had cut down to 44.5" today (feels much better). The tech doing the work suggested I try the regular Burner (not tour). While I was waiting for the work to be done I hit the simulator to try a few clubs. Everything felt pretty mediocre (Hi-Bore XLS, Ping G10 w/V2 etc) until I hit the Burner.

Right off the bat it felt completely different in my hands. The whole combo felt very light and the shaft had a very strange rubber band feeling to it. It had the 50 gram RE-AX shaft in it and I'm not sure what loft it was since the only marking on the head was "HT". I hit 10 shots and at least 7-8 of them went dead straight 200-220 yrds. My swing speed is normally pretty low (around 90-91 mph) but after I got in the groove with the Burner it was consistently 95 mph! I'm not sure if it's because the whole package is lighter or the whippy feeling shaft helps with head acceleration but I'm very impressed.

I might have to return or sell that Nickent 4DX driver I bought today on impulse and trade it for the Burner. Has anyone else had such a positive experience with it? I know a lot of people are raving about the Tour version but the little brother to it suited me really well.

The increase of your swing speed is, I believe because of the lighter shaft. Positive experience with it? None, I hit it too high and slice it bad. The stock shaft is too light and feel way too noodly for me. If you like this, then you probably would want to try the r7 CBG Max (even lighter shaft).

If it says "HT" on it it means 'High Tradjectory" which I beleive is 13.5 degree's which I beleive is way to much loft and is aimed at people with slower swing speeds.

95mph swing = 200-220 yards? I was clocked in the low 90's with 250-260 yards on average.

Unlikely. Highly unlikely.

95 and 200-220 is about right. "low 90s" and 250-260 = hogwash, unless you're getting 50-60 yards of roll. And I'm saying that not to encourage a response (please don't - PM me if you have more to say) but just to let other people who may read this thread some day know what they can expect. The general rule of thumb? 1 MPH = 2.3 to 2.4 yards of carry, and that's with nearly optimal launch conditions.

I swing at 95 at the start of the day up to 105 once I groove my swing that day. At 95, I'm generally 250 on a straight hole with about 15 - 20 yards of roll. My father's clocked in at 91 and he's around 220 all day.

but after I got in the groove with the Burner it was consistently 95 mph! I'm not sure if it's because the whole package is lighter or the whippy feeling shaft helps with head acceleration but I'm very impressed.

if you can control that "whippy" feeling to get your ball to go straight and eventually work it..then swing that bad boy. Once you groove the swing, 95 mph is easy to stick to. Also remember you probably hit 10 - 20 to warm up. take that to the course with you..swing and loosen up..but don't overswing..just groove your swing for the day and i bet you'll be crackin it 260/270 by the end of the year...and that "whip" helps with distance too....at least that's what I feel.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I just realized I put "Regular Tour Burner" I guess it's not tour anything just the 07 Burner model. The simulator I hit on was a pretty new model at a PGA superstore that opened last year and the guy said it's typically about 5-10% shorter than real life. So theoretically a 220 yard carry and roll on it could be 231-242 which I think would be right on the hard summer Texas grass we have here. I hit my 19* 3 hybrid about 200 carry with a 20 or so yard roll and the way I was hitting that driver it definitely would go longer. Keep in mind the shots that were going 215-220 on the simulator were with the 93-95 mph swings and the 91 mph swings at the beginning of the session were yielding about 200-205 yard total carry and roll.

I'm not sure why the HT model worked so well for me, I only hit 1 or 2 balloons that were mainly from teeing it too high but the majority of my shots showed a 13-14 degree launch angle with around 3,900 rpm spin and were within 10-15 yards of dead straight. I hit quite a few balloons with my 12* Nickent, hopefully the shorter shaft will let me control it a bit better. I never really understood the difference between regular and stiff shafts until I hit the regular flex 50 gram REAX back to back with a stiff flex 65 gram V2 wow what a difference. Are you supposed to be able to feel the shaft bend a little at the top of the backswing and on the downswing or is it just preference? With all the stiffer shafts I've hit it feels like 1 solid object (shaft and head) swinging instead of a head on the end of a shaft if that makes any sense.

Either way I'm very very impressed with the club. If the Nickent 3DX square I had cut down to 44.5 last night still doesn't work out I may sell it and pick up the Burner and decide between that and the 4DX draw that I have coming to me in the mail.

I have the 10.5 degree version and love it. It has a bit of a closed face to prevent slicing, so if you slice this driver.....you gotta be swinging out-to-in with your hands pretty open. 13* is way to much loft on a driver, IMO, through. I wouldnt go over 10.5.

I think there's something else to it besides just the closed face. My 3DX square has a very closed face 2-3 degrees and I still manage to slice the hell out of it. I think it has something to do with the head snapping into the ball slightly ahead of the shaft on the downswing to help square it at impact but that's just a guess.

Unlikely. Highly unlikely.

Wouldnt this also have to do with what degree the drivers being hit are? I didnt think I saw anything about that, but I might have missed it.

I was hitting what turned out to be a 13* driver, the HT model. Surprisingly my launch angles were only about 1-2 degrees above the loft of the club so I must have a VERY flat swing. I could see a 9* going 250 easily with a 95 mph swing.

Do you shift your hands in front of the club face at address? I dunno.....if you can consistently slice a 2-3* closed Draw driver.....I think there is something else up other than the club.

Not much. I square it up and slightly tilt my wrists out towards the target just to make sure the handle is a bit forward. On the initial ball launch it goes straight and about halfway up when it reaches the apex and starts to drop it goes right. It's not a slice that starts right and continues that way.

stock shafts usually play a bit softer if you compare that to aftermarket shafts.
i'm guessing that you are slicing probably because of the shaft too stiff for you?
when i was picking out a driver, i usually try those with stock stiff or after market regular.
btw, my ss is about 90

just something to pay attention to, so you end up hating burner later and looking for another new driver.

If i hit the driver 270-280 yds consistantly, probably 240-250 carry with 20-30 yds of roll... does that mean i swing around 105 MPH? hmmmmm if i can just get 10 more MPH... i'd be able to get 300yds on average...

Oh back to the main subject, I tried every club at Golfsmith when i chose the TM Burner. It was the most forgiving and longest driver out of all the demo drivers on the rack. 2 of my friends have also switched to the Burner not long after I got me one lol. One point i'd like to make... I chose the 10.5 because it was more forgiving and actually longer on "average" than the 9.5. Hope you enjoy yours as I am mine.
