How can you tell if the grooves are shot on your wedge? I've noticed less spin the past 5 rounds or so on my wedge/pitch shots, I think the grooves are shot on my Ping Tour 56* wedge. I've had it for about a year, I'd say 100 rounds with it myself, and then driving range/chipping practice...also I got it used to begin with (looked like used maybe 15-30 rounds before I got it)...I just am not sure how to tell when they are really shot and ready for a new wedge. I may be moving onto the Titleist Vokey Spin Milled (chrome) wedges, really love the look of them.

on the bobby jones infomercial with dave pelz he says that if you run your thumbnail against the grooves and it doesn't click its time to get new wedges- i don't know though if that's just advertising for new wedges

The ping Tour wedges are made from 17-4 stainless steel so I would be surprised if they were worn to the point of needing replacing after 150 rounds plus practice. If you want to try some other wedges in the hope that they will give you more spin then go right ahead and do so, but don't do it because you think your current wedges NEED replacing.

The only way I could see them being well worn after 150 rounds is if you were practicing bunker shots with them for a few hours every day. The abrasiveness of sand will increase the amount of wear by quite a large margin.

If you like the wedge alot you can get it re-grooved. It's not very cost effective though. For another $50 you can just buy a new one.

I like the club, but I don't feel like it's one of those clubs I couldn't do the same job with a new one, if you know what I mean. There's nothing wrong with, but the lack of spin on a few pitch/chip/and full shots got me thinking the grooves may be worn since I've played so many rounds with it. In the summer i play 6 times per week including range practice, bunker/chipping practice, and playing...so I mean, I could go through quicker than the average golfer.

I'm not really sure I want to dish out the money for new wedges just yet though...but I don't really want to repalce the grooves on a wedge that cost me 50 bucks to begin with.

If the grooves are not that shot you can buy a tool that sharpens the grooves on your wedges on ebay for about $20 plus shipping costs.

I've heard from many people that resharpening tools don't work very well at all. I don't know form personal experience, but heck for 5 bucks i'd give it a try.

How long does it last? Like do they end up like new or is this a temporary fix?

Zip grooves are U grooves. Square grooves, box grooves, spin milled grooves... they're all the same thing.

Not saying that to correct you, just wondering aloud why the tool would pretend they're different.

I believe the tool on ebay has one side for U grooves and one for V grooves.. Let's see if I can find a link (not sure if I'm allowed to link to it, but here goes)..

Here's a link directly to the URL stamped on the side of the tool: Groove Sharpener I don't have one of these, but I've thought about it. I bought the one from Golfsmith for $8, looks like a utility knife -- worked great on my 588RTG 60, but not so well on chromed wedge heads.

Ahhh, yes, that would make more sense.

They might be starting to flatten out and close a little. I had that problem with my lob wedge years ago and had to have it regrooved. The grooves had actually closed up and were smooth.

you're right. i meant 1 side's standard & 1's a zip side. I figured they might have been different b/c that's what the kid at golfsmith told me when he sold it to me "1 side's for the zip and 1 side's for the others." not only did I play myself...i just found out I shouldn't be talking to him if his info's all wrong. and to answer the question, i don't know how long the grooves will last for after you tool it. it claims they're like new.
