It's a local club, not a professional match or anything but here's what went down.

4 of us hit our drives on #8. I'm in the right rough behind some trees, my only shot is a punch out but I can advance it about 30-40 yards.

I'm away and first to go. I take out my wedge, and right in my back swing one of the other 2 players (not my opponent) (unintentionally) said something with a very loud voice. It totally made me flub the shot. The guy was apologizing when my opponent said to hit it again.

I said, "I don't think I can do that". He said "don't worry about it". I said I don't know if the rules allow for it, if the other guys yell is considered interference.

He then said "I'm your opponent and I'm telling you to hit it again". It sounded right in keeping with the spirit of a fair match. So I dropped the ball back where it was and rehit it. We ended up tying the hole. I won the match on 17.

I wasn't too sure of the rule on interference by an outside agency. Note this isn't a PGA event with a gallery, if that even matters.

Any takers?

p.s. I can't imagine 95% of us would not do the same thing as my opponent did.. so temper your reaction with how you would act.. not as if you were the PGA Rules co-chair.

Although it's unfortunate, if this were a tournament match, Rule 1-3 would apply:

1-3. Agreement to Waive Rules Players must not agree to exclude the operation of any Rule or to waive any penalty incurred. Penalty for Breach of Rule 1-3: Match play — Disqualification of both sides; Stroke play — Disqualification of competitors concerned. From what I can tell, however, this was not a tournament match. If you agree to waive the rules, you can still play for money or whatever, you just can't consider it golf. Basically, what you did is akin to playing some silly format that violates the rules: it's not golf, but you still use the golf course and can bet money on it.

What's in my bag:

Driver: R7 CGB Max, regular shaft
4-wood and 7-wood: :: Launcher, regular shafts
4-iron to A-wedge: X-20, regular steel shafts56- and 60-degree wedge: forged, stiff steel shafts, vintage finish, MD groovesPutter: Circa '62, No. 7, steel shaft, 35"Ball: NXT Tour or ProV1(x)...

That's not really an opinion. If you aren't following the rules of golf, you're making up your own game that can't be called "golf."

If it was a match against the guy (say, the match play championship at your club), it's not so much an agreement to waive the rules as it is that guy acknowledging the score and tying the hole. Though the semantics would matter, the end result is that the halve would stand because he agreed the hole was halved and he didn't make any claim before y'all teed off on the next hole.

I agree - play by the rules or don't call it golf!

Another option if you think that your opponent has been unfairly affected by some outside agency that caused him or her to fluff their shot is to simply knock your next one a few feet sideways thereby evening up the state of play. I have done it a couple of times in the past in similar situations. It's not always about winning you know, how you win or how you play are far more important in the overall scheme of things.

Yup. My bad. It is not waiving the rules to declare a hole halved in the middle of playing it.

2-1/1.5 Players Agree to Consider Hole Halved During Play of Hole ... An agreement to halve a hole being played does not of itself constitute an agreement to waive the Rules. However, if the players agree to consider a hole halved without either player making a stroke, they should be disqualified under Rule 1-3 for agreeing to exclude the operation of Rule 2-1 by failing to play the stipulated round. Thanks for clarifying this situation.
