Just when I thought it was impossible it took me over 6 hours to play 18 holes yesterday. I went out to Copper Hills Golf Club in Michigan, which is a super course by the way, and it happened. We teed off on the front side at 8:16 and waited at least 5 min to hit every shot. We putted out on #9 and I looked at my watch, it was 11:15! I would have left if I was playing alone, but I was with my wifes uncle. We went to make the turn and the starter made us wait. I voiced my displeasure in the speed of play and he said, get this, "You guys weren't even on the slow 9, the other two nines are where the problems really are." Can you believe that? It just took 3 hours to play 9 holes and thats not the bad 9!

So we finally tee off the back and we wait and wait again on the back side and finally finish at 2:30. At no time did we ever see a course marshall, at no time did anybody say anything to us about how they were even sorry about the pace of play. It just seemed like business as usual. Its too bad too, because it was a really nice, fun golf course and I would like to play it again. But I don't think I will ever go back there. I don't have 7 hours plus drive time to devote to playing 18 holes. I have played 27 holes in less time than that.

Sorry to hear that. The weather was crappy too so you would have thought many stayed home. I played in Ann Arbor and we were done in less than 4 hours.

It took my dad and I about 5 hours to finish yesterday. We had some foursome in front of us who all took like 20 practice swings before each shot and were NEVER ready to hit when it was their turn. Meanwhile, we had some hackers behind us shooting it over our heads on the fairway while waiting for the green to clear.

Sounds like Durand Eastman Golf Course here in my area. It's a Robert Trent Jones layout, a fun course, and it's priced rather cheaply. But those three variables add up to every duffer and their hacker brother jam-packing that course every weekend. You're guaranteed a 5+ hour round every time there.

I played it once last year. I just go into it knowing I'm gonna wait on every tee. But I don't usually play it more than once a year anymore. I haven't played it this season yet.

Sounds like a round I played once at Bay Point Lagoon Legend. Out in 2 hours, 10 minutes. Not bad. In, however, in another 3 hours, 50 minutes. Came literally within seconds of being a perfect six-hour round.

6 hours yesterday at Rancho Park golf course. Teed off right behind a tournament, but then again, 6 hours at Rancho Park on a weekend is expected. Now I remember why I play there weekdays instead!

I pity you. I hate slow play and normally finish a round in just over 4 hours when there's nobody in front of me.

I'm still waiting for the slow foursome ahead of us to find their ball. Right now its dark out, and in the distance the crickets are laughing. A wolf is howling. If we bivouac we can hang on till morning.

Same here. I played one tournament in 5.45 and I was rather displeased with that. I guess it puts things in perspective.

    • I did not realize that, I was thinking a more traditional golf club.
    • Thanks for the feedback. @StuM, we are a "club without real estate" so no facilities or pro. We have a membership of around 185 players and we only play together as a group at our tournaments, which are held at public access courses. A group of us setup the tournaments, collect the money and dole out the prizes.
    • In general, granting free relief anywhere on the course isn't recommended.  Similarly, when marking GUR, the VSGA and MAPGA generally don't mark areas that are well away from the intended playing lines, no matter how poor the conditions.  If you hit it far enough offline, you don't necessarily deserve free relief.  And you don't have to damage clubs, take unplayable relief, take the stroke, and drop the ball in a better spot.
    • If it's not broken don't fix it. If you want to add grooves to it just because of looks that's your choice of course. Grooves are cut into putter faces to reduce skid, the roll faced putter is designed to do the same thing. I'm no expert but it seems counter productive to add grooves to the roll face. Maybe you can have it sand-blasted or something to clean up the face. Take a look at Tigers putter, its beat to hell but he still uses it.
    • I get trying to limit relief to the fairway, but how many roots do you typically find in the fairway? Our local rule allows for relief from roots & rocks anywhere on the course (that is in play). My home course has quite a few 100 year old oaks that separate the fairways. Lift and move the ball no closer to the hole. None of us want to damage clubs.
