I'll start off by saying that I'm looking forward to the 503.U.

But that being said, I currently use the TaylorMade Rescue Dual TP . Prior to that I was using the 503.H , but I traded a better ball flight off the tee (503.H) for a better ability to recover from junky lies (Rescue).

Dave, did you stick with the Sonartec or have you gone back to the TM? Do you use it in Spanish ?

My hybrid replaces my 2-iron. I still have 3-PW (+2 other wedges, driver, 3W, putter).

I've got the Mizuno Fli-Hi II and love it but I'll admit that it isn't the best out of deep rough or other trouble situations. I like the way the Rescues feel but hate the two tone head. I also have a Callaway Heavenwood and a Mizuno CLK that I'll start comparing against each other. The hybrid replaces my 3 iron

Everyone should know based on the review...I have the TaylorMade TP right now. The Sonartec will get another good look though.

Per my signature, I use the Sonartec Md 21°, which replaced a 7-wood in my bag. More accurate, more versatile and a stronger ball flight than either the Big Bertha (20°) or 904F (22°) 7-woods I was using previously. And very useful from the aforementioned "junky" lies and for creative recovery shots.

I am looking forward to trying out the new Nickent 3DX DC 20° in the spring, and I think the new Ping hybrid looks pretty cool, too.

in the bag today:
Driver: TaylorMade R9 10.5° (Fujikura Motore 65 stiff)

My Mizuno Fli Hi II is 21 and the Heavenwood and CLK are 20

I would like to hear what you got to say abou the Mizuno CLK, I have thought about getting one of those. Since Titleist might be coming out with the 503.U I love to try that.

I play a 2h and a 3h callaway heavenwood, and then 4-pw in irons. I tried out most everything else before settling on these, I love how easy they are too hit, and how i can hit them out of all junk.

I use the latest version of the Cobra Baffler, with the Aldila shaft. I find it very effective when hitting from the rough and when chipping around the green.

They're woods ("metals" if you like Johnny Miller's term). The Rescue Dual and the Rescue Mid are hybrids.

Is the loft on the hybrid iron supposed to be equal to the loft on the iron replaced?

For example I have a Wilson hb5 3 (loft of 17 deg.) It is supposed to replace the 3 iron according to the site. But when I go to the Mizuno site and look at the specs on my 3i it says the loft is 21 deg. Does this make sense?

Hybrids typically fly farther with the same loft because they're longer, thus they meet the ball with more speed. Many come with graphite shafts too which also helps to hit the ball harder.

then you're telling me that since it's also 4 deg. stronger (17 deg. compared to 21 deg.) that it would go much further than the 3i no? All I want to know is if I'm replacing my 3 iron (21 deg.) should the replacing hybrid also be the same loft?

No. Hybrids, like Erik said, fly a bit farther for the loft. You'll go with a hybrid that has about 2-3 degrees more loft. Even this will still get you a bit more distance. The only way to really tell is to get a hold of a demo and hit the 3 iron and hybrid side-by-side.

Fairways and Greens.

    • At a basic level, you can take those strokes gained numbers and if you know what the baseline strokes to hole out is from each distance, you can figure out how many strokes on average you will take to hole out from any given spot on the golf course. Then you can take that shot zone thing from shotscope and put it down there and see what the average is for each club and each target you choose. That's not exactly trivial to do though even with a computer, so the strategy guides (like LSW) use rules of thumb to make those decisions easier for you to make on the fly. Most of the time you'll come up with the optimal strategy and on the odd occasion when you don't, the strategy you come up with will be pretty darn close to optimal. If you're anything like me, then you'll probably wind up being a little too conservative with both club choice and target. Fear of penalty strokes can make you play suboptimally. Basically it's a bad idea to base your strategy on a shot that might pop up less than 1 in 20 times. If you happen to hit that shot, then today just isn't your day, but the 19 times you don't, you'll be in that much better of a spot.
    • That sounds like a small sample size issue. What if the PGA tour event he was trying to get into just happened to fit his game perfectly? Also, he could just be playing hot right now. I’ll put this in the wait-and-see category.
    • I've used a construction laser for years. Far less expensive than the PuttAim laser.
    • True, but as 15 year olds go, he has a much better chance of getting there than any of the rest of them. Kid can flat out play. He almost Monday'd into a PGA tour event a few weeks ago too. Missed in a playoff.
    • I'd bet against him having much success as a pro, because of, you know… the odds. You don't want to be the best 15-year-old in the game. You want to be the best 25-year-old in the game.
