I'm still fairly new to the game, so for the last year I was using second hand clubs. Today I got a decent whole set brand new, Obviously I would like to keep them looking their best, and playing their best for as long as possible.

What do you guys do for normal upkeep on clubs? I read something about scraping out the notches on the clubface with a tee? Do you do this after every round? Every few weeks?

Also..How important, or not are shoes? I normally wear tennis shoes, but I am considering finding a decent pair for the course..Should I just stick to tennis shoes for a while longer, or would a good pair of golf shoes actually help me any?

Thanks!

After every round, I get out some warm water and soap and scrub my clubs down. I use an old toothbrush to get the dirt out between the grooves.

As for shoes, I recommend getting a set of golf shoes. There are lots of companies (Footjoy, Nike, Callaway, etc.) You want something that'll be comfortable because if you're not riding, you're walking. Walking 18 holes won't be too much fun if your feet are aching.

Would you play tennis in golf shoes?

Then why play golf in tennis shoes.

Keep a golf towel attached to your bag and wipe any moisture off your clubs before they go back in your bag.

Take good care of your putter, and she will take good care of you.

1 out of ten rounds or so I play barefoot otherwise golf spikes. Tennis shoes let you move all around mid shot.

After every shot I will wipe any dirt/grass off of my clubs with a towel. Also, before each wedge shot I will take a tee and scrape as much dirt out of the grooves as I can. After every round I will scrub the clubfaces down with warm water and a club cleaning brush (it has soft bristles on 1 side and brass bristles on the other). That gets all of the dirt off of the clubs and out of the grooves.
Then, I just dry the clubs with a soft towel and put them back in my bag.
If you want to keep your clubs looking new, you might want to consider investing in iron covers. They protect the heads from the little nicks that you get when the clubheads rattle against one another.

I got a club brush for 3 dollars at the local store. That and cleaning them off twice weekly at the range and wiping the dirt off after a shot is all I believe I need.

I personally like having shoes, especially if you play in the morning or anytime where there may be precipitation (I like in WA, so it's a necessity). I feel like I slipped a lot when wearing tennis shoes.

Also, tennis shoes aren't waterproof. You wouldn't want to walk around with cold wet socks do you?
