Life Expectancy of Golf Balls

I have some brand new golf balls that I haven't used and some slightly used golf balls. I haven't been going through my golf balls that fast lately since I can't play often and luckily not losing them when I do play. How long before these go "bad"?

I was just curious on the shelf life of new golf balls.

For now, I am using up the random Titleist's that I have such as HVC Tour and DT Distance. Then I am going to move onto DT Solo and NXT Extreme. The HVC Tour seem to have turned my slight fade into POWER fade so I don't think I'm ready for tour type golf balls just yet.

I got new wedges and so my ProV1 get ripped up pretty badly at the moment - but still i was able to use it 36 holes (i did this a couple of times before ) - but after 36 holes i normally send the ball into retirement or my practice bucket...

If you bought them new they will be fine until you lose them. If you found some in the water or in the woods they might lose something from sitting out in the elements. But for the most part a new ball won't go 'bad' from sitting in the house or car.

on sunday I tee'd off and hit a nice drive down the middle, leaving myself with roughly 90 yards

pulled out the sand wedge and with one swing the ball had a nice scar on it... prov / prov1x - pretty much any soft 3-4 piece will tear up easily if you clean your clubs and grooves often

I'll play a ball until I see a change in ballflight... I've had iron shots look like a tim wakfield pitch

From what I have read....shelf life is about 5 years.

Just make sure to keep the golf balls out of heat and cold. So clearly don't store them in your car trunk.

Me...may sound crazy....but I empty my golf balls out of the box and into an Igloo cooler so I can store them in my garage.

I think it is ok to keep the golf balls in the trunk for short time storage between rounds....but not if your are attempting to prolong the shelf life. In fact...balls coming out of the hot trunk just might compress better from being heated.

As long as they arent exposed to extreme heat or mositure, they really wont go bad. Right now Im using a bunch of Cougar balls that are at least 8 years old and they work fine. They go straight (as long as I swing the club correctly), they take 2 hops and stop when they hit the green and they putt true.

My mother in law just gave my son some Pro V1X's that we estimate to be 2003 models. Her husband died recently and he had a big stash of golf balls. I'm curious as to whether they are still good. He has some big matches coming up and I don't want him playing a ball that may go kerflooey.

For matches, I'd say use some new balls and use the old ones for practice since the newer balls have "newer technology".
