What is your avg. score?

I shoot in the 80-84 range consistently, sometimes breaking 80 (best score being a 76). Just curious.

Thanks!

My understanding of the American handicap system is that they should hand in twenty signed cards, and the best ten go towards their handicap, the effect these ten cards have on there handicaps depends on the difficulty of the course which is determined by the 'slope rating'

I have always argued that it is easier to get a lower handicap using the American system than the CONGU (English Golf Union) system.

Yeah, thats what I always thought too. I've also heard that they can put social rounds towards their handicap, which in Australia we can't. You have to play in the comp (on usually around 2-4 times p/week), and there is a certain amount you lose or get back with how well you shoot.

For 25>32 hcp- Lose .4 p/shot under hcap, get .1 back when over 4 shot buffer zone. 13>25- Lose .3 p/shot under hcap, get .1 back when over 3 shot buffer. 4>13- Lose .2 p/shot under hcap, get .1 back when over 1 shot buffer. <4- Lose .1 p/shot under, get .1 when over. There is a set rating, which is just shown on the cards. It might be 74 off the black tees on a tough par 71. The CCR rating is what counds, and is just the amount of shots over or under the course is on that day. The CCR on an easy day on that same par 71 might be 71. This means that if you shoot 3 shots over your handicap, the rating brings it back to even if the CCR was 74. I think the English is sort of the same?

Almost identical to ours, the only difference is (unless you simply left it out) is that the average score for the day effects the standard scratch, so if ten guys playing off a handicap of 20 shoot 15 over it will effectively turn the standard scratch of 70 in to 65, thus making it harder for lower handicaps.

This system which equals our system in Germany makes it incredible difficult to reach scratch or beyond when you only get 0.1 per stroke you underplay your hcp once you reached 4hcp. You basically need to shoot 40 under par (of your current hcp) to get to 0 and never play worse, which of course is impossible!

Just imagining the rounds i would have to play in tournaments i guess that would take 2-3 years once you reached the skill level. Personally i´m not willing to do it this way - once i got there i probably just move to the US, get a membership/USGA hcp - post the necessary rounds and transfere my handicap back to Germany - thats way easier to do than the other way round. Is there a thinking error in my plan or is this possible?

LOL, I thought our system was already hard enough with the rating system, and yours makes it even harder!

The only problem would be, that when you moved back to Germany, you will probably go back up to what you were off anyway, and also, you may not feel as satisfied doing it in that way, the easy way out.

But I do agree, it is almost impossible to get down to scratch with the system Germany uses, which is the same as Aus.

No - its possible to transfere your US handicap to Germany - I knew a guy who moved from the US and had no problem getting his HCP accepted.

One of our +hcp´s always runs around with some kind of USGA badge at his bag - now i understand why....

BTW - i dont really understand why they make it so difficult to reach that goal. I read an article in GD a couple weeks ago explaining the possible variance different hcps shoot (the big spikes are always up - and very rarely down) - and it is virtually impossible for a lets say 7hcp suddenly become scratch by some kind of hot streak when applying USGA rules. I think if you are capable of scoring an avg of 72 in 10-20 rounds that should be statistical evidence enough that you are scratch...

It gets silly sometimes, I know a boy off scratch who's handicap went up shooting 2 under gross lol, how on earth can you compete with that.... honestly its so hard to get cut at the moment, too many high handicap bandits.

The Irish system is the same as English/Aussie and is what I'm used to. The benefit of the US system is that you get to include everything, so the more rounds that are included the more accurate, right? I guess the bit thats missing is the standard scratch on any given day, but that can be affected as well by people not handing in their cards if they've had a bad day.

No, in the American system you choose your best ten of twenty cards to go towards your handicap, your worst ten are ignored.

Depending on how I'm putting I shoot between 76 and 84. I'm sure like most low to mid handicappers I lose more shots on and around the green than anywhere else.
