Recently I have encountered troubles hitting my irons. I was hitting my irons like the following.

PW 95-105
9 105-115
8 115-125
7 125-135
6 135-145
5 145-155
4 155-165
3 165-175

As of lately I have been in a huge struggle. I lost atleast 15-20 yards if not more on each iron. To my knowledge I am not doing anything different, but my friend had mentioned that my backswing looked a little flat. He said I might be gripping the club too tightly as well. As for my shots, they dont have that "ramp like" take off anymore. I either am hitting them really high up or just getting them off the ground. any suggestions?

I would also like to add due to my recent struggles I have gone from shooting mid 80's to low to mid 90's. It really had added 7-10 shots to my game. So I need some serious help with this.

the best piece of advice I can give you is to videotape your swing, and the post it in here so we can see whats going on. If you can afford some lessons it will be great, otherwise the sandtrap can help you a lot. But judging on your lack of distance and your handicap, I bet you are casting the club, no lag whatsoever, in other words you are scooping the ball, and that is a very serious illness you have to cure rightway, it will requiere a lot of practice though.

When hitting weak distance in irons,casting the club can be a main factor,casting equals no power and relatively high shots with no zip in them.

At the range or next time on the course, slow down your swing and concentrate on good, downward contact.

Maybe just a little glich in the swing that you can overcome by slowing things down. If you are worrying about distance, you may be trying to compensate by swinging harder which actually tends to make things worse.

What would be a reason this is happening. Im new to golf within the last year or 2 so Im still trying to understand the game. Is there something anyone suggests i do to fix this problem? My game is really downhill because of my lack of hitting irons. I average 2.2 putts per hole. I can hit my driver 240 if not farther. But when it comes to irons I am done for.

I am thining the same thing as the other guys, for whatever reason you have increased the loft of the face of the clubs by scooping the ball, or whatever. check your ball isnt too far forward in your stance, or the shaft isnt angled forward at contact. these two things may be causing the loos of distance in your irons? just something to try

A shaft lean to the left at address is not a bad thing, and if anything it will help prevent casting and scooping because it promotes a steeper angle and keeps the hands in front of the club-head.

I'm right there with ya on the irons. I'm looking to buy some new Titleist or Nike irons, but right now I'd go to the range and simply start trying things until something clicks.

Two weeks ago I could hit sections of the green on cue - now? I'm lucky to hit it even half-well.

What seems to break me out of slumps is focusing on turning my shoulder square with the ball and then lowering my shoulders to get a higher ball trajectory. May be worth a shot.

Check you're grip. I was losing 10 yards on each club because my grip was too weak (mixed in with one or two other little things) but the grip being extremely weak had me adding loft to clubs (making a 7 iron a 9 iron) and shooting the ball up at a really high trajectory. By just making it stronger can give you at least 5 more yards, probably even 10.

Thanks for the tips. Im doing a Driving range session this morning, then I have a tee time later tonight. I will be focusing on your guy's tips during that time. If anyone has anymore things to try let me know. I will post later how I do during todays golfing.

I could never decently hit my irons before this year. A couple of lessons was all it took to begin to correct my problem, and though I'd still like to add 10-15 yards with each iron, I am using them with confidence for the first time ever. And I dropped 10 shots because I am not swinging easy with my woods (I actually bought an 11-, 13- and 15-wood!) for shots I should have used my irons for.

Spring for a lesson or two. I wish I had years ago!
My Equipment:
Northwestern 3-, 5-, 7- and 9-wood;
Goldwin AVDP Irons (5-10 plus PW);
U.S. Golf 60 degree wedge;
See-More Putter; Bushnell Yardage Pro 1000 Rangefinder;Golflogix GPS.

Exactly. If you are not taking divots from your 7 iron down, you are most likely adding loft to the club. Divots are not the be all, end all. But they do tell a story about your impact position (assuming they aren't behind the ball with a fat shot). You really want your hands in front of the ball at impact with the 7 down. You want the shaft BUTT leaning toward the target at impact. Ideally you want to drive the ball down hard into the turf causing a backspin that lifts the ball, not lifting the ball with the loft itself.

My yardages were about the same as yours a year or so ago. Now I am just as flat and laid off as I ever was, but my yardages have increased by hitting down. I'm up to 115 on the PW and 155 on the 7 iron. I only take what is most people's 3/4 swing and half back my shaft is almost parallel to the ground....now that is flat! My new swing thought for hitting down is to fire down on that ball hard by turning my right shoulder down and under. It also keeps my head down, or more specfically, keeps my spine angle intact. Try a forward press at address. This is what really got me hitting down in the first place. Good luck.

your distance with the pitching wedge doesn't seem to be that short compared to your distances with your 7 iron and up.

If you hit your pw 105 id say you should be able to hit your 7 iron about 150 with the same swing.
