I went to the driving range today and after countless attempted adjustments on my drives (which were being hooked) I found what may have been an obvious problem. I was moving my front foot, almost picking it up, but not quite, and I wasn't transfering my weight. So I was elevating my front side, and hitting off my back foot. Once I began concentrating on keeping the front foot still, and transfering my weight to end with that 'picture perfect' finish, I began hitting higher, straighter drives. Could that have been the big problem

Possibly yes. You really want to keep your lower body quiet. By lifting your foot, you are forcing yourself to time your swing beyond what is really necessary. By keeping your foot down, you are allowing yourself to transfer your weight easier, which allows you to fully release the club, which gets you to that picture perfect finish. I'll go out on a limb and say that you may have come across a fundamental of the swing that you should learn to apply. Keep that foot quiet in the backswing and you'll be along the right track to developing a repeatable swing.
