So I'm looking for buddies ball in the tall grass. I come across a ball and yell here it is. I dont touch it because I shouldnt. Buddy gets there looks at the ball and says Thats not mine. He then picks the ball up and puts it in his pocket and keeps looking for his ball which he finds and eventually hits.

Correct me if I'm wrong but its my ball the guy put in his pocket. Two different guys have done this to me in the last week. I only hit pro V's so it shouldnt really matter to me but it does drive me nuts.

If it was me, I would have tossed the ball back to you if it wasn't mine. I have always played that whoever finds it first gets to keep it. If you don't want it then he can have it, but you should get first right of refusal.

I will judge my rounds much more by the quality of my best shots than the acceptability of my worse ones.

I don't know that this is exactly a golf etiquette question, but when my friends and I play, if someone finds a ball at any time, it's theirs. Even if it's while looking for someone else's ball. Usually at the end we'll take all of the "found" balls and split them up and hit them onto the driving range (unless they are in pristine shape and/or the same ball that we play). Usually the balls I find are not in the best of shape anyway.

did you know what type of ball he used on the tee box? and if so did you even bother to look at the ball in question, or did you just see it in the tall grass and yell..."here it is"?

if you knew what type of ball he used/uses and didn't bother to look at the ball in the tall grass...then I'm sorry imo you should have looked better at the ball and by all means you could have picked it up for yourself.....you snooze you lose...

but if you looked at the ball in the tall grass and it was the same brand as he used, then your correct, it was your ball

Call me crazy, but I MIGHT spend 30 seconds looking for my ball. After that, it's my fault that I suck and if it costs me a couple bucks as a penalty, I deserve it!

This "five minute rule" about looking for a ball is insane. The pace of play is already light year's too slow.

That said, he should have given you the ball you found.

That's a good idea - always ask what kind of ball you are looking for. Then, if you find a ball that's not theirs, you can keep it, AND it prevents them from cheating by claiming any ball you might find as theirs (avoiding the lost ball penalty), LOL!

At first when I read it, I thought that was the ball you were playing... Yeah you should get that ball.

I can top that story.. At the big member guest invitational last week, this guy was telling me how he didn't play well, and joking I was like well here's a ProV1.. He actually took it and put it in his bag! The whole conversation was a joke and there's no way he thought I was serious.

IMO, if the ball isnt your buddy's, its finders keepers. I think in the future Id make a point of asking him what ball he is playing and if the ball you find isnt the one he plays, Id pocket it and not say a word.
Also, I do think its a little bit rude (and kinda cheap) of your buddy to pocket a ball that you found.

Since this was titled "etiqutte question", I hope that you and your buddy made sure that it couldn't have been another golfer's ball. If the ball was in the toolies and not just the rough then it's yours. If I find a ball in the rough and there is even a remote possibility that it could be someones on another hole I leave it. I know that I hit the ball two fairways over at times.

It amazes me how excited some people are to find a ball.

With the groups I play with whoever finds one makes sure someone else has to take it. Anything thats found usually gets hit into the water while we are bored waiting for the group in front of us.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Played in a group two weeks ago and one the first tee one of the guys asked everyone to show their ammo, and markings. He stated that it was simply to clear up any issues later on that may arise. There was nothing at stake....just us having fun.

It did prove fortuitous later on in the round on number 16, a par 5. The same guy hit was last to hit as he had been digging around in his bag for something...I thought tees.

He hit a solid drive and then we went to address our perspective shots. I smiled as he went up to my ball and made ready to hit. I stopped him and pointed out it was my ball. He looked down...saw the same ball and same markings I'd showed him on the first tee (it was actually the same ball, too). I walked over to his but noted he wasn't playing the same brand anymore.

I though it funny that the guy who brought it up was the guy who pulled a midround switch after making a production out of each of us showing our ammo on the first.

To answer your question, though, I agree with you...you found 'em....you keep 'em. They may make good shag balls for later on.

To stop that from happening you should just ask him what ball he's playing before he goes over; that way, if the ball isn't his, you pick it up.

Just because you found it doesn't automatically make it your ball.

I agree that since you found the ball it should be yours and not the other golfer.

Here is an great example of how golf bring out a true character of a person in such sudtle ways. If I were hiring a new employee for a high position, I would play a round of golf with them and see how they handle themselves on the course.

In fact, If my daughter is going to date or marry someone, they are going out on the golf course with me first before I say, yes.

I think first one to get their hands on it is its new owner.

This reminds me of my buddy, who is, without a doubt, the biggest ball scavenger on the planet. He will go into the marshy woods next to the course we usually play, armed with his 5-iron, for 3 or 4 minutes and come out with 10 "new" balls and mud drenched shoes. It's getting to a point where I'm contemplating buying climbing equipment for him because he usually needs me to pull him back up.

This happened to me today, it was odd too because, we were out on the course, i said how I wanted to go buy a sleeve of balls but when i walked into the clubhouse I realized I left my wallet in my bag and then it was about time to tee off. Then on the 3rd hole we're waiting for a bit (it's the first par 3 always a little backed up) and one of the guys in our group is showing us this big case of Nike Ones he bought. Four holes later, I TOTALLY shank my drive into the tall grass to the right of the tee box only about 20 yards down... luckily the ladies tees were RIGHT in front so I didnt have to take anything out *ahem*

So I dont take muligans unlike my buddy so I go looking in the tall grass, I find a ball and say "here it is, Oh wait no, that's a Pinnacle" I look up the other fairway coming towards us, as I do my friend starts walking up. "That cant possibly be theirs" I say looking at the ball then up at them one last time just to be positive. Then as I look back over, my friend walks up, says "This isn't yours?" Picks it up and pockets it and walks back up the fairway.

I didn't say anything but I actually was a little pissed. It looked pretty new and I was using a double kart path scuffed ball that looked like it should be a retired vetran with a purple heart, not a soldier on the front line...

    • Welcome to TST @Camjr.   We're glad you've joined.
    • Angle is not a factor. I hit the ball 100’ high. Par is net birdie. My CH is 16. The rough between the bunkers is like 10’ wide though. That’s not something you’re going to try to hit on purpose. Most of the area to the left of that is fescue/native vegetation and I’m pretty sure there isn’t a flat lie in any of it. It’s the second hole.
    • Hello all.  I'm about to be 57 yrs old, started playing when I was 16, and have quit and restarted the game more times than I can count.  I had started playing a weekly round with a friend, and finally made the jump to Senior A shafted Tour Edge clubs.  Instantly gained 10 yds with an easier swing (why didn't I make that jump sooner???).  Glad to be a part of the group. Cheers all,
    • I think I like this hole.  It is a clear "Risk-Reward" choice.  Since most of the shots in your cone cleared the bunkers I would say they are a minor risk and not a big issue.  Playing the aggressive line may give you 70ish yards in from what looks to be playable rough while conservative play is 120ish from fairway.  I know you said 70 vs 120 is minor for you but how does the approach angle in impact your results?  I figure both strategies are playing for Birdie since holing out from either is mostly luck. Looking at your proximity hole I think it says @ 50 feet when hitting from the fairway from 100-150 and 40 feet if hitting 50-100 from the rough.  Neither of those is an easy birdie putt.   I like the approach angle from the rough between the bunkers & the adjacent tees over the angle from @ 120 in the fairway but I really do not like the idea of hitting onto the adjacent tee boxes and that may impact my confidence with making the shot.  Also, too far left may be a worse approach angle then from the fairway short of the bunkers. For me this may come down to how confident do I feel when I reach that tee box.  If I am stroking it well off the tee leading up to the hole I would try for over the bunkers and the better angle in but if I am struggling that day I would likely opt for the fairway to take more bad stuff out of play.
