I have noticed the grips of many pros both men and women and they appear to grip about 1/2 to 1 inch down the grip from the butt. Do you do this? and is there a reason other than proper sole alignment?

Where they in the rough? That stuff is deep at their golf courses..

Funny you ask, I actually did the same thing yesterday with my 9iron at the range. The 130 out flag I was either on it or to either side of it but still close. Choked up about 1/2 inch to an inch ish and was putting everything on the green close to the pin.

I grip down about 1/2" because that gives me a better lie angle. You can also grip way down on the club is you are inbetween clubs and want to fine-tune your distance.

At the 3 day golf school I went to at Stratton, VT, my instructor told me to to "choke-up" 1/2 - 1 in on the club. I've been doing it ever since.

I generally grip near the end on all full shots unless I'm between clubs, in which case I'll grip down 3/4 inch on the longer club and it usually works out okay.

Chips and pitches are a different story....grip well down on them.

I also grip down to the center part of my putter for all puts except those that are more like greenside chips.

I really noticed last week that Anthony Kim does this... He seems to grip down almost 1"... I never seem to notice those things for myself, I will just grip it where I pick up the club... need to start focusing on some of these smaller things...

When Anthony Kim won his first tournament of the year earlier this year, we were at some friends saying he choked up on every club..

I also choke up like 1/2 on my driver.. I think it's more consistent.

i grip it at the end of the club. i feel when i start choking down then i start messing with the lie angle.

Im not a fan of the 'choke up to shave some distance' because i feel its not a very repeatable way of distance control...i think by just limiting distance to two factors (club and backswing length) its much easier to be precise.

I have heard from various sources that you should grip down on the club 1/2 to 1 inch. I grip at the end of the club 90% of the time though, unless I am in between distances. Wedges are a different story and I always grip down a good inch or more on those.

I grip down with my driver about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Everything else is 1/2 to 1 inch or lower depending on distance and lie.

I will grip down if my ball is on higher ground than my feet. Otherwise, only 1/8 inch clear of my left hand.

Same here and also when I'm in between clubs with the wedges..

For full shots, I will grip towards the end of the club assuming that I am on a flat lie.......if I am in between clubs, I move the ball a little closer to me and choke down.

Depends on the shot.

Generally, I place my left hand on the grip with enough room for my right index and middle fingers to come between the end of the grip and where my left pinky meets my palm pad. Originally I started using this technique because my hands are on the smaller side, and before getting smaller grips, would just grip down three fingers to find a more comfy grip, diameter wise.

Now a two finger gap is my normal grip, but if the ball is above my feet, I'm looking to take a little distance off my shot, chipping, taking non-full swings or want to get a little more height from my shots, I'll choke down.

But with the two-finger technique, it puts my hands at the end of the club.

I use this grip-spacing with all my clubs except my putter.

  • 6 years later...

I think I may have stumbled on an issue of mine because of this thread. Everyone here talking about choking down or at least being completely on the shaft. My left pad is hanging over(not completely on the shaft) in my grip. I think this may be a problem and causing some of my control issues. Any ideas what this can cause? I assume I should make the change and get my entire left hand at least on the shaft if not down about 1/4 inch clear of the butt?
