In 1985 they wanted to see who in America was the worse avid Golfer. Well they found him...a guy from my home state, Pennsylvania.

He ended up shooting a total of 257 for 18 holes (99-158) at TPC Sawgrass. He took a 66 alone on the famous 17th Par3...he hit 27 balls into the water and actually had to finish the hole using his putter to get to the green....

So, just when we think we have had a bad day on the links, heres proof that there is always someone else out there who has it worse.....

By the way, what's the worse score you have ever posted for 18...past, present whatever.....if I can recall correctly my was in the 130's at a course in Maryland (Diamond Ridge)

one of the kids on my school golf team (doesent play alot because of said occasion)

In TOURNAMENT play he took a 144 on 18 holes ...DOUBLE PAR

because it was a school event (i shot 78) 78+144=222
and their 85+85=170

needless to say: we lost

thanks teamate..

A few weeks ago, I went to the executive course I play often planning on playing a leisurely single round. Just as I was about to set off, the starter informed me that since one of the members of the foursome teeing off behind me had to cancel at the last minute, I would be held back to fill their group. Since I had been hitting my irons well on the practice range recently, I planned on keeping the woods in the bag. Unfortunately, the members of the group I was paired took aim with the driver on every hole, and to secure my masculinity, I started to pull out the big stick as well. On four of the seven par fours of the course, I pushed my driver well left and into trees; on the other three long holes I hit good tee shots, but was left with half-wedge approaches every time that I either skulled over the green or chunked thirty yards short. Even though I only three-putted once during the course of the round, the abandonment of my course management strategy put my tee-to-green game so out of whack that I finished with a 102 on a par 62 course that I usually play in the 80s.

Chili Dipper, you should have stuck to your strategy no matter what. I just had out first day of HS tryouts and everyone but me hit driver on every hole. I hit 3W all day and was second in the group by 2 shots (but I should have one by one minus the triple on the 17th that should have been avoided by looking for my ball longer).

I know. In fact, considering that one of my good tee shots was a 245-yard low draw with a 3-wood to just short of the green on a 275-yard par 4 (which I chipped and two-putted for par), I probably still could have outdriven them without the driver. Ultimately, it was my inconsistency with the 50-70 yard wedge shots I found myself not hitting solid time and time again, and the resulting loss of confidence that spread to the rest of my game, that killed me more than the driver did.

About 16 years ago I posted a 86+89= 175! My worst hole was a 19. I kept chipping the ball over the green. This is not a hard course and there is only two holes where water comes into play. This is the first round of golf that I ever played. I guess that this would discourage some people from ever playing again, but I was determined to improve. I guess that there was no place to go but up from a day like that.

My first round ever on a full size course 68.0/115 was a 134; a long round to say the least.

Most people have know idea what there worst score is.There is a wide margin between playing this game correctly and fluffing the ball with a couple of mulligans and a dozen gimmies.

I couldnt imagine being an avid golfer and still shooting a 257. If that were the case, I think Id need to consider taking up a different sport.
I usually shoot 100-105 on 18-holes and I thought that was bad!

Don't feel bad. My team came in last in EVERY SINGLE MATCH this season. Even though my stroke avg. in competition was 84, our four man score for every tournament was up in the 390's+. wow....

Who in the world carries >27 balls with them or was the Proshop nearby??? I have no idea what my worst round was (we mostly play stableford) and just skip the hole when i´m over the limit - so that speeds up play a bit actually. I remeber a guy last year shooting around 130 in the club championship - he was the clown of the whole club after that. I will play the first time this year and pray that this wont happen to me - since there are some spots at our course where a triple bogey suddenly looks inviting...

My worst ever was 137 (+66) in my first high school tournament (we had 4 pretty good players and a bunch of us who, umm, weren't so good). I was on the 2-man team and the other guy shot 147! We took last, obviously in 2-man and also obviously, in the 6-man event. I shot 121 in my next and kept it right around 100 in the few more I played after that. Did I mention this was my first year playing?

The 137 included 4 holes in double figures and one hole which was a 15! I did get my first ever par that day though!

The company I worked for had a corporate membership to Firestone before things changed there.

It was a HUGE deal to be chosen to play there. I've played several times on the beautiful North course and had some respectable rounds from the 'member' tees.

Twice I've had the displeasure of playing the South Course where the Phils and Tigers of the world are playing this week. Here's a couple of recaps of how completely 'overmatched' I was at this course:

Hole 10, (we played back/front) tee ball landed just right of dead center. Picked up tee and didn't give it a second thought. Out to fairway--no ball anywhere. If you hit the right HALF of the fairway, your ball comes to rest if 4" deep rough that is as dense as you'll find anywhere.

Second shot was struck with a 6-iron and never made it out of the rough. Just went in deeper about 5' ahead of its previous position. My playing mate offered a good bit of advice: "Just wedge it out IF you can find it!"

I did. Hit 7-iron to green which rolled through and stopped in the 'spinach' they have around the green. Bladed from there, off the front edge of green. Decided to putt from 2nd fringe cut.

Three putts later I walk away with 8 on one of the 'easier' holes on the course.

On #12, I finally hit a green. However it rolled off back/right into a very DEEP bunker. Since my short game has always been good, I didn't think twice. Dug in, took the swing and the ball came out like a cotton ball and landed on the green. I ran up the hill to the green just in time to see the ball roll off front/left and ... into a bunker!

It was then I realized that on a course like Firestone South, I was completely overmatched. Don't remember if I counted more than one for the several lost balls in the rough and one time remember picking up and throwing my ball onto the fairway when I didn't carry the 180 or so required to actually MAKE the fairway from the tee box.

Two rounds. Twice EASILY into triple digits. 110-115 range both times.

OTOH, I've broken 90 on Firestone's North Course twice. Fairways are much more fair, rough isn't nearly as treacherous, bunkers are shallow compared with those on the South course. The north is CC quality as it's intended, the South course is simply diabolical!

I'd be interested in the high scores for the single-digit handicappers on the forum. Come on, you weren't ALWAYS that good were you? ? ?

    • Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
    • Just stumbled onto the article.  Totally random and thought it might be interested to hear other thoughts. maybe I am tired of all the LIV crap and  this just caught my attention.
    • Day 1: Spent some time hitting some balls. Working on my hips and a “soft” and straight trail arm.
