Heya everyone,

I just started playing about 2 weeks ago. I went through a bucket of balls before my first lesson and that was the extent of my golf experience. Had my first lesson 2 weeks ago. But I was careless about stretching and strained a muscle between my ribs. I had to take the next week or so off while it healed.

Everything feels fine now and I have had exactly two half hour swing lessons. But given that my lessons are only once a week, I was hoping to get some advice from everyone on some things I am doing wrong.

Yes I know there will be a million things wrong, but don't be shy with your critiques. Tough love people, I can take it!

I uploaded a video of 4 swings from behind with a 3 iron off the tee and it can be viewed here:

I'll post the side view tomorrow as well.

Any and all advice, suggestions, or comments are appreciated and what a great forum. Glad I found it!

I'm a newbie as well. Good luck with the swing. I know I'm looking forward to scheduling my lesson as well. I've been out to the driving range once so far. Going again tomorrow and I can't wait. Practice makes perfect.

Your spine angle looks pretty good. And it looks like your right hand grip is strong enough (from this angle). I see you are rocking at address, and this may just be your move to get the juices going. One thing It does look like your butt is too far behind your feet. Or that your legs need to be more under you. You want a stable base under you to turn around. You want a nice "athletic" stance. Imagine a basketball player defending someone from driving the goal, a linebacker braced for a hit, or a shortstop getting ready to feild a belt high one hopper. If these analogies don't work, just think about sitting in a chair and how if you get your weight behind your feet you will flop down insted of sitting softly. Good luck, your gonna have a lot of fun with this golf thing.

I don't see your wrist cock on your back swing. I would practice with wedges and not your 3 iron. You are lucky to begin golf at an early age. good luck and have fun.

Your swaying your body try to keep from swaying, also your left arm is bent try to keep it straight and your right elbow closer to your body ,like if you put a towel under your armpit while you swing and try to keep the towel there without it falling to the ground. also keep the long irons in the bag 3,4,5,&maybe6; practice and play with your short irons to get a feel of your swing with the easy clubs. start with that for now. My biggest problem when I first started was I would try to kill the ball, but I learned if you swing half as hard and make good contact with the ball it will go straigter and farther then when you try to kill it.

Nothing technical, just keep on golf – watch it every chance you get, read everything you can concerning the game, play when you are able, and practice a lot. Continue to tape you swing and you’ll be able to identify your fundamental flaws and then work it out on the range.

LOOSEN UP!! you seem to be stiff and like somebody said, you need to cock your wrists, also you seem to reach for the ball, stand there with no club and take your stance over the ball, let your arms hang freely, thats where your hand position should be, but mainly always HAVE FUN!

Thank you all for the responses via replies and IMs.

So much to work on... so much fun too.

I thank you all for your input and I will work on your suggestions this week.

Next weekend I will post another view of my swing from behind as well as from the side, so that you all can see all the NEW bad habits I have inadvertently picked up.

Anyway, thanks again for the suggestions. What a wonderful forum here. Happy golfing everyone!

Your left shoulder is hitting your chin, we can almost see your other eye on the backswing. Lift your chin up a little.

I'd like to see that head on shot. You seem to have an overly strong grip with your right hand or it is just the camera angle. Definitely some balance issues on the set up. I paused the video at the top of your backswing and noticed your hands are way behind your back shoulder meaning arm swing and body turn out of sync. If I had to guess you have a lot of lateral body movement and just kind of throwing the arms around. I would strongly suggest a beginners lesson or lessons focusing just on setup, grip and backswing.
