During the 1932 Walker Cup, golfer Leonard Crawley accidentally hit his ball in the wrong direction and it ended up hitting and denting the Walker Cup trophy. link

From the History of Golf:

"Perhaps the most likely forerunner was the Dutch game of "kolf," documented as early as the 13th century and portrayed in many Dutch landscape paintings by the 16th century. "Golfers" certainly played cross-country with sticks and ball, not into a hole but to certain landmarks, usually doors on specific buildings."

Tom Watson won the 1977 USPGA Championship, 1975 Open Championship, and 1977 Open Championship with clubs that were later deemed not to conform to R&A; and USGA rules and regulations. No disciplinary action was taken.

Not too long ago breast cancer was found to be the highest among women professional golfers over all other sports. It was finally discovered that the herbicides on the golf course was the cause. Herbicides are estrogen mimickers and the body thinks it's getting more estrogen, hence the increased rate of estrogen-positive breast cancers. This may also be implicated in prostate cancers, because of the hormone relationship. Most golf courses have stopped using herbicides. If your favorite golf courses haven't, ask why not.

Leo Fiyalko is 92 and legally blind. It just took a 5 iron for the 110 yard hole. He got his first hole in one in his 60 year career and couldn't even see it.

Margaret Waldron, a 74 year old legally blind lady scored a hole-in-one in 1990, then did the same thing the next day using the same ball!


The blind are hitting holes in one. I can't hit the green in two!

If a rat pees on you, what would be your first instinct? If it was “Continue my game of golf without wiping it off,” you might want to rethink your priorities and take David Bailey’s demise to heart. He was a Dublin man who died in 1997 after a rat peed on his leg during a golf game. Rather than cleaning himself, he played through—then his kidneys shut down two weeks later and he died. I don’t know what’s more tragic: the fact that he died as a result of rat pee, or that the world knows that he didn’t shower after being peed on by a filthy rodent.

It is the internet myth that the name of the popular Scottish game Golf stands for "Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden." The word golf originates form medieval Scottish and Dutch dialects. Back in a day before the creation of dictionaries, there was no standardized spelling of any given word. So it is believed that word golf originates from Dutch word "kolf" or "kolve" which meant "club." Later on old Scots dialect transformed the word into "gouf" or "golve ."

Ever wondered where the golfing term "birdie" comes from? It seems we have an American named Ab Smith to thank. While striding around a course in 1899, he played what he described as a "bird of a shot", which became "birdie" over time. ("Bird" was 19th American slang for anything really, really good. Kind of like "cool" is for us.)

Seventy-Seven Players completed the 18-hole 6,502-yard Kern City Course in California in 10 minutes, 30 seconds, on August 24, 1984, using one ball. Score - 80!

Babe Zaharias is the only woman to have made the cut in a PGA tour event.
In fact she made three cuts on the PGA tour.

In 1945, Zaharias played in three PGA tournaments. She shot 76-81 to make the two-day cut at the Los Angeles Open (missed the three-day cut after a 79), making her the first (and currently only) woman in history to make the cut in a regular PGA tour event. She continued her cut streak at the Phoenix Open, where she shot 77-72-75-80 finishing in 33rd place. At the Tuscon Open she shot 307 and finished tied for 42nd. Unlike other female golfers competing in men's events, she got into the Phoenix and Tucson opens through 36-hole qualifiers, as opposed to a sponsor's exemption.

Alan Shepard, the first American in space and fifth man to step foot on the Moon used a six iron club head attached to the bottom of a collecting tool to be the first "lunar golfer"

It took two swings before he connected his club with the 'little white pellet'. Seemingly unsatisfied with his shot, Shepard dropped another ball to the ground and this time took glee in his drive. "Miles and miles and miles," Shepard exclaimed.

It was later estimated that Shepard's shots had traveled only 200 to 300 yards, but that was good enough to earn Shepard the title of first lunar golfer.

      Yea Club Rat said it. I really enjoyed the Senator and the Judge, then over to Grand National where there a couple good courses plus a fun par 3. The one I do play whenever I visit there is Ross Bridge; something about this course that is just good fun. I hope to play more of the courses in the future, but tomorrow is promised to no one, so hope is the key word. Have Fun, iSank

      Eh. He broke ONE of Tiger's records. Youngest to be ranked #1 in AJGA. It didn't help that Tiger's birthday is in late December, or that Tiger didn't play many AJGA events before he was 15. Did he do any of these things?       Day 56: 4/19/2024 Okay, even though I'll be teeing it up in a tournament in less than a week. I couldn't find time to get to the range today.  I spent time on the indoor putting mat.  And I spent time in front of the mirror with my 7 iron. Then again later with the driver.  I also thoroughly cleaned all my clubs.
