Looking at getting a new driver, an R7 superquad. My swing speed as about 110. Would you suggest a 9.5 or 10.5 loft?

Also for those who know what loft and what swing speed are you?

9.5 with a stiff shaft. My friend plays a 7.5 with an Xtra stiff shaft, but his swing speed is 117-120 in that area.

If you are swinging that hard and spending the dough you should get on a launch monitor. Fitting cost nothing if you buy the club. Most places take the cost of fitting off of the purchase price of a club. Try to do it somewhere that has a driving range as well, so you can see a ball flight pattern. I would try to demo some models so you can hit on the course with the ball you actually play with.

I would say get fitted since you aren't some average joe wanting a new driver. To optimize your purchase a fitting would be best. Good luck!

I have a 10.5* Driver with an extra stiff shaft with a high kick point and a 98-103 mph swing speed, and I still hit the ball too high. I an going down to a 9.5* Mizuno Mp-600 with a stiff shaft when I get the money. That way I can adjust the trajectory as necessary. With your swing speed I would say that you definitely do not need a 10.5* loft. I would go with between a 8.5* and a 9.5*. But remember, the shaft can make a huge difference in the trajectory of your ball flight. I recommend that you get fitted for a driver that plays to the trajectory that you need to maximize your distance and accuracy!

I was just fitted for a driver last weekend. My swing speed was typically 108-112 high speed 115. This is a typical agressive but not 100% swing. Ended up with a KZG SPX 9 degree with a Fuji Rombax, stiff shaft, tipped to make it slightly more stiff (but not as stiff as the X).

Not exactly cheap, but it will fit me (or they'll keep working until it does) and, consequently will last me a while (I don't purchase new equipment each year No way I would have happened upon this combination by chance, and no guarantee that your similar swing speed will result in similar optimal setup. Get fitted.

a lot of launch angle is determined by the swing. I tee the ball up decently high (3/4 of the ball above the crown) and swing up into the ball so I launch it pretty high with my driver (actually getting excessive at times where it is an actual swing flaw - excessive reverse c finish). My swing speed is around 100. I get by with a 9.5 905r with a stiff nv and I get a nice mid penetrating trajectory. I've also been using a 10.5 d2 w/ ys6 and 10.5 r5 w/ nv and I hit those way high I'm sure my distance is all carry.

that being said, going solely by your swing speed, I would say 9.5 or 8.5.

I would suggest going 9.5 instead of 8.5 deg to maximize ball carry. But you still need to hit the launch monitor and see the result. Also try some shafts while you're at it.

I play a 9.5 degree Superquad, with the RE*AX stiff shaft (mid tip)

Love it to bits, and the club is on the "more draw" setting which gives me only a very slight draw (I have a natural fade). Flight is very high, and distance, although very long, is all carry. I think if I changed to the normal "draw" setting, the trajectory would be lower, and more roll, but on the courses and weather conditions I am currently playing, carry works well.

This is a great article for you and everyone else to read: Study: More Driver Loft = More Yards Sunday October 19, 2003 A big problem with the driver for many recreational golfers is too little loft. The feeling is that you don't want the ball going too high, because then it doesn't roll as much. And, therefore, it's better to have less loft. Turns out that thinking is completely wrong. A study conducted by Golf Digest shows that more loft on the driver equals more yards for nearly all recreational players. If you have clubhead speed that matches or exceeds that of the pros, then you can get away with playing an 8- or 9-degree driver. But only a tiny fraction of us have that clubhead speed. The rest of us probably need a driver with a loft of at least 11 degrees. The study appears in the November issue of Golf Digest. Unfortunately, it is not yet posted online (there's no guarantee that Golf Digest will post the article online, but if they do, it will be linked on this page). The crux of the article is that more hangtime with your driver generally means more yards, even though that seems counterintuitive to many golfers. One story told is how the long-drive champions use stopwatches in practice to time how long the ball is in the air. If the long drivers recognize the importance of hangtime, that's a good indicator. The study examined driver distances at different swing speeds ranging from 65 mph up to 115 mph, and with driver lofts of 9-, 11-, 14- and 16-degrees. For most golfers, it turns out, adding loft to the driver increases driver distance by an average of 10 yards. At 65 mph, the 16-degree driver was the longest; at 75 mph, the 16-degree again; at 85 mph, the 11-degree was longest (and the 9-degree was the shortest at each level up to this point); at 95 mph, 11-degrees was longest and 14-degrees second-best; at 105 mph, 11-degrees was longest; at 115 mph, 11-degrees was longest. So if you're one of those golfers carrying a 7.5-degree driver or even a 9-degree driver, do yourself a favor and add loft. I highly recommended picking up the November Golf Digest and reading this very interesting article.

i'm 115 - 120 .. bought the R7 superquad 9.5 stiff .. shaft was way too flimsy and went way too high. Over my career I've always played 7 - 8 degree drivers.

took it back . .superquad's don't come in 8.5 .. I got a Ping G10 7.5 .. shaft was still too flimsy .. so reshafted it with a UST V2 X stiff 2.2 torque .. i hit this thing a ton now and very straight .. the shaft makes all the difference.

Wonderful!! Thanks for the article, which also brings up that in order to lower trajectory you'll need to find a suitable shaft instead of getting lower lofted driver. To be honest, my UST V2 does its job very well.

Maximize ball carry not roll.

I like the 9.5. It is more versitile and creates less spin on the ball.

My current driver is too little.

I went with more loft, larger head and weaker shaft w/ livelier tip all to help me with this.

I'm also making changes to my swing to widen and lengthen the arc but do away with to much hand action up at the top.

I wouldn't even begin to know what it's like to get 110 mph with driver. Good grief, man.....with the right weapon you will kill some fairways.

Were I in your realm, I'd definitely go to a green grass fitting center and hit all the concievable clubs. I'd go online and find the neareast Titleist and Ping fitting centers and go give it a try. Even if they don't have time to drag the stuff out on the range and work with you, they'll let you come in and out and try the different drivers.

I'd guess that you'll wind up with something in the 8-9 degree range with either a stiff or x-stiff shaft.

Good luck....you are generating some serious clubhead speed. Take the time to get mated up to the right shaft & loft and you'll be launching bombs.

I'm curious. Did they do this test outside or based on accuracy at all? I know that for a slower swing speed a higher loft is required. I swing 102 m.p.h. and use a 10.5 stiff. It keeps my ball flight at a controllable trajectory and I get my max distance out of it. If you put a 14 degree driver head on my club. I would sky ball it and lose distance and lose accuracy in the wind. Higher wind speeds at higher altitudes. Also, I read the link from the other post, saying that a 45* launch angle is optimum. Maybe for a cannonball. But a golf ball is not a cannonball. Golf balls will be much more affected by wind because they have dimples and about 5x the spin of a cannonball. The user who posted this is not looking for just distance. He probably wants something with a nice trajectory that won't balloon in the wind from his swing speed. To answer the the post. I would say that a 9.5 would give you a nice trajectory and max distance with a natural draw. But if you hit a natural fade, than you might wanna go with an 8.5. Mainly because draws do not have as much spin as fades do, and that is why they are usually lower. If you hit a fade with 9.5 it might balloon a little bit. I use 10.5 and swing 102 m.p.h with a stiff shaft. I hit a small draw my miss being push. I get about 260 average. But you should definately get fitted first.

    • I would recommend spending some time at the range and film your swing. You can post it in the Member Swings thread. At the range, you can figure out how to control the driver a bit more. We can offer some pointers once you post in the Member Swings section.
    • With the H4 or the watch, you tag the club before hitting by putting the tag next to the device. The tag is on the club butt end. After a round, you don’t really think about it too much. You just do it. I don’t know how far you are from @phillyk, but he may know an instructor in your area.
    • So the biggest issue right now is marrying the hands down with an athletic turn. I can get stuck not turning. Things get interesting from there.

    • Hi everybody!  I am new to the golf game. I have taken some lessons and got fitted for clubs a couple of months ago. I usually score between 110-120 for 18 holes.  I bought a Stealth driver last year and have been hitting consistently with it 210-230 yds on the simulator. But when I take it out on the course, every drive is a severe slice!  I played 18 holes yesterday at the club where I belong. I removed the driver from my bag and used the 5 iron to drive with. I hit straight 16 out of 18 drives, 180 - 200 yds. I used the 5i - putter for the rest of my game.  I ended the day with a 92. Question: Does it make sense for me to continue playing with irons only until I get further along in my game before I reintroduce the Driver and woods again? Or should I continue to struggle with the Driver and woods and shoot in the 100’s again? To me it’s a no brainer, but for those more advanced I am interested to get feedback.
