My last visits to the range have been horrendous. I went yesterday, and was not able to hit my irons in the air. Topping the ball and everything. I felt I was doing something very weird in my swing. So I came to this conclusion:

I feel when I'm on the range, I'm not shooting for anything. I'm not trying to make the perfect shot. I'm not trying to hit it straight. Yes, I aim for a target, but for what? To pretend like I'm on the course? I just don't get that feeling like when I'm on the course. The range means nothing to me.. I just don't really see the point in hitting a good ball out there.

Now when I get to the course, I know this will all disappear, because I'm playing for something. I've realized the range is pointless for me now. It can't bring the same envoirnment as the course does. I hit bad shots out there because I'm just hitting into an open field.

Theres no short grass to aim for, no dance floor to hit onto. Its a waste for me.

Anyone else have the same kind of feeling, where they can't hit the ball on the range, but on the course they can?

You bet. I came to this conclusion last week. I went to the range to brush up before my first match play round and I couldn't hit the ball to save my life. Then I had my match play and won after 19 holes with an 83. I can see me only going to the range to practice chipping/putting, but no more full shot work.

Eh. Wish I had that problem. On the range I can tear through my clubs, hit nice, easy swing after swing. Place wedges where I want, and even hit the hit, 20 yard flops.

But on the course... Sigh. WHO DECIDED THAT A CREEK BELONGS THERE!? And by there I mean everywhere I hit.

Exactly! Why go on there to hit "nothing balls" when you can go on the course and practise?

A lot of the time it seems like it's the exact opposite for me!

Seriously, the range does me a lot of good, from time to time. I don't generally have a ton of BAD shots on the range, maybe because I'm not just ripping drives, I am out there trying to learn something.

I hate the range. It's a boring way to waste an hour and has never seemed to translate to the course for me.

That said, I'm happy when I break 100 so I should probably spend a lot more time being bored. :)

I used to be fine on the range, and Now I'm beginning to hate it.

To be honest, I always try new things on the range, which can develop into bad habbits.

When your on the range, you hit ball after ball with the same club. When you get a bad habit, it continues because your about to hit another ball again right away and you do the same thing.

Meanwhile, on the course you hit a shot where you induce a bad habit, you walk it off to your next shot, and it disappears because you can't remember what it was.

I'm not much of a range rat either, but I find if I do go from time to time, it generally helps my game. It actually works for me because of the exact reason that you mentioned, because I'm not playing for anything. My biggest problem is that I tend to lose my rhythm, and hitting balls on the range helps me to get that back... because I don't have anything else to focus on except making a nice, easy swing.

Yeah I use the range to practice chipping and putting mostly. If I get a new wedge for example I'll hit a bucket just to get a idea on its distance. But I'd much rather play a course and get "real world" practice.

Yep. I tend to hit almost all of my iron shots "fat" on the range, and take a HUUUUGGGEEE divot. Sometimes only hitting the ball 30 yds. On the course, I never take that big of a divot.

This happened to me today. I went out to practice my swings and get ready for a tournament this weekend. I was hitting so crappy today it was unbelievable. The range is pretty much worthless for me too now. Yet I never hit like this on the course. :knocks on wood:

That happens to me all the time. It's frustrating. I hit terrible on the range, then the next round I play really well, and sometimes the exact opposite, lol.

hmmmm......maybe because range balls are $5-$10 a bucket when a round will cost you $30-inf.... The range is good to keep your rhythm or when you are working on swing changes.........

Im the opposite. I can hit on the range very well, but once I get on the course its like Ive never hit a golf ball before.

I'm the same way. I think it is because on the range I get in to a rhythm and little is running through my head. On the course, I think way too much.

It's all in your attitude. If you go to the course and just smack the ball around while you get drunk you will hit the ball just as bad. When you're going to the range you should have something in mind that you are trying to accomplish. I mostly just use the range for working on tempo and making sure my posture and alignment look good. If you have the attitude that you are hitting "nothing balls," then you are going to get nothing out it.

I completely understand you mate. In fact I was playing the las weeks pretty good, but one day I decided to go to the range and I was making big hooks, topping the ball or shanking the ball. I went to the course with that ibad feeling in my mind and this two last weeks I play horrible.

Regards!

Home On The Range - It’s all about ingraining a repeatable swing. How else could you muster the confidence to draw a 5-iron 215 yards to the flagstick? The only way to pull-off this kind of shot is to have done it multiple times on the range.

I went to the range the week before last, even though I took it easy no significant pain occurred just a slight twinge when I swung my #4 hybrid. The most encouraging news was no soreness the next morning. However I think switching back to graphite shafts is definitely gonna happen, my mp15's were fitted with X shafts and having something lighter will help.
