Lately I've been hitting my iron shots and even my wedges fat. My woods and driver I still hit fine, it just bugs when you have a great drive and your second shot is fat. Some of my fat shot I'm digging a creator in the ground. Could it be a weight shifting problem, where I'm shifting to late to my left side? If anyone knows what causes, or how to fix fat shots I would love the advice Thanks

very likely scenario is that you have too much lower body movement in your backswing. would you say that your lower body is quiet during your backswing?

Referencing Lee Trevino;

fat shots are usually caused by releasing the left hand on the grip on the back swing or down swing. maintain a constant pressure with your left hand on the grip and see if the fat shots cease

Thanks for the tip, Went back to the range today and I must've just been putting the ball to far foward in my stance, I just moved the ball back about an 1"or 2" and fixed it right up. It's funny how if you don't pay attention to the little important things how bad it can mess everything up.

Where is the ball in your stance now? Is it a lot more towards your back foot now? By moving the ball back, this may be just a quick and temporary fix.

Maybe getting your swing and the mechanics down will help you in the long run. Because if you're doing something wrong now and keep on doing, it'll be a bad habit that will take forever to get rid of.

Again, this is just a suggestion but if you feel comfortable with it and your scores are dropping, by all means go with what works. :]

The ball is about 1"-2" past middle of my stace towards my back foot for short irons Is that too far back you think?

I put my ball 1"-2" back in my stance when I'm hitting a wedge, usually for chipping. Other than that, everything else is right in the middle.

There's another thread in here regarding hitting fat shots. Let me see if I can find it for you, it has great tips in there to fix this problem.

More than likely fat shots are from a power weight shift during transition. If you have your ball beyond center closer to your back foot to adjust for an improper weight shift... it could cause more problems than you want.

I am headed to a lesson in a couple hours to help resolve this same problem. I notice it happens when I want to add that "little extra" ooomphf to a shot. I think I am transitioning way too soon and casting the club with little to no weight on my left foot at that point. (Righty.) I notice my fat shots go away when I have a nice smooth swing with a good tempo / weight transfer.

for ball placement take 2-3 practice swings and see where the club brushes the grass and that us where to place the ball for that club

I went to the range again today put the ball back in the middle of my stace and hit it well , I don't think i hit more than 2 fat shots ,also played 18 and shot pretty well today with no fat shots during play. I also was'nt trying to kill the ball, that's when I mostly hit it fat to. Let me know how the lesson went, and what the pro told you to do to fix the problem. thanks

For me the fat shots came from decelerating on the downswing and trying to steer the ball. That caused my weight to stay on my back foot as well. Accelerate through the ball and get to your front foot at your finish. Took a while for me to fix this but I rarely hit it fat now. I hit so many fat shots I was ready to quit the game. LOL.

She basically told me what I was expecting. Stop swinging so fast and make sure to have a nice easy tempo. Me trying to "crush it" resulted in a very fast transition (not taking a full back swing). I need to slow it down and that will result in much better contact.

1) make sure that your left hand is extended fully let relaxed.
2) make sure that you are backswing is rotating around and not swaying laterally.
3) focus on swinging with your shoulder and take your hands out of the swing.
4) If you are hitting your irons fat you must be hitting your chip and pitch shot fat also, so practice making solid contact with your chip and pitch shots first and your iron game will follow.
5) think compact swing

Just my 2 cents.
