I took a trip to a Golf Galaxy the other day. I was talking to the head equipment guy there and was asking him what balls he recommended. He said the TopFlite D2 Straight was a good ball and he also recommended (and I bought to try) Callaway HX Hot Bites.
He said (don't know if its true) both have all the features that Titleist stole for their ProV1's.

1: Balls I use
Taylormade TP reds 07 (Sports authorty for 25 bucks)
Top Flite Gamer (20 bucks)
Noodle + (16 bucks)

2: Balls you should get next
That depends on if money is a consideration, I would not recommend Prov anything for a 36 handicapper.

Topflite D2 feel 15 pack for 15 bucks would be my suggestion

Taylormade TP 2010 9.5 Fubuki stiff
07 Burner 5W stiff

Adams F11 Ti 3W Adilia NVS Stiff
Bobby Jones 21* & 25* Hybrid

alright thanks, i am thinking about the d2s probally, and 36 isnt my handicap, it was just the default and i havent changed it because i actually am not even sure what it is

Its not always how you drive the ball, but how it arrives.

I wouldnt recommend a Pro V1 or any of the other premium balls for a high-handicapper. I go with one of the harder, distance balls that are designed to limit spin. The will reduce the amount of sidespin that you get, which will result in straighter shots.
Id really look into Precept. Their balls are made by Bridgestone (Bridgestone owns Precept, actually), their balls are really affordable and they are designed to reduce sidespin, so you get longer, straighter shots. Granted, the ball wont stop on a dime when it hits the green, but thats the price you pay with a harder ball.
You could get a 24-pack of Precept Laddie Xs for $20, which is a pretty sweet deal.

I disagree that beginners need balls with less spin. Spin gives you lift and if you are not hitting greens, then you need more spin than anybody to get up and down around the green. A pro COULD use any ball, the high handicapper needs more performance form their ball than anyone else.

If you can hit your driver over 225 yards, you're long enough to step up from distance balls. You probably lose more shots from a lack of touch on approach shots and near the green than you do with inaccuracy off the tee. Granted, ProV1s and other $40 tour balls aren't worth it for the average player in terms of price and performance. I'd suggest a three-piece ball; the Top Flite Gamer and Wilson Staff Zip are both three-pieces that can be found for under $20 a dozen at most golf stores.

I usually play with Nike Power Distance balls, they're pretty cheap and have an over-all nice feel to them. For tournaments or something, I bust out my Pro V1's.
