Stone Crest

Its an 'ok' place, but isn’t that great. Its fairly easy with the main obstacles being trees. They have 3 9-hole courses which they somewhat take care of.

The tee boxes are pretty used and it shows and they don’t move them/repair them often enough.

They do move the hole on the green around weekly, but the green it self is a little pot marked with divots.

Their sand traps are a joke. They aren’t filled with 'golf sand'. What they have in them is a little thicker. They aren’t properly irrigated either, so they trap water which stays in them for DAYS after it rains.

The driving range is ok, but they don’t have mats, they just have a tee box like area, which means unless you buy a rubber driving tee, you’ll burn though a lot of wooden ones. It also means there are a lot of sliced up areas from people hitting the ground/digging in. The range markers are large colored rocks, which your ball will sometimes hit, and the signs for their ranges isn’t easily seen (its buried in the ground). No place to prop up your bag, so bring a stand bag.

They have a small practice putting green and rim area so you can practice pitching onto it, but no markers for the holes (sticks to catch the ball)

The majority of their carts are gas powered, which are much weaker and louder than the electric ones. They also don’t like non-members or late players using their electric ones and try to save them for events and such. The good thing is all their carts have electronic readouts of how far to the center of the green you are.. so that’s handy.

Id rate this as
(2) Fair to (1) Poor

IU Par 3 Course

This one is nicer than my last review. They have 2 main courses. A 9-hole par three course, which is great for practicing your short game and iron shots, and an 18-hole champ course.

I have only played on the 9-hole par three thus far, and will review the 18-hole when I get a chance to play on it. (or if someone else has played on it, feel free)
The tee boxes are simple. One spot boxes, they are however using normal grass that has weeds in it, and not specialized grass. Because of this, the ground is uneven and is planted in that Indiana ‘clay’ they call dirt, which sometimes makes it difficult to set up a tee (ive broken a couple tees just trying to setup)

I haven’t notice them moving the hole around the green, but haven’t played frequently enough there for myself to notice, but my guess is they don’t move them. Many of the greens are near or under trees, which means leaves are always on them, and one green (hole 6 I believe) has a rather large dip in it, like the ground caved in.

They have no fairways to speak of, as all but one hole is a par three (the one exception being hole 2, which is short par 4) so I guess that isn’t a big deal really. They have no water hazards or sand traps, and only a small amount of wooded area, so its fairly difficult to lose a ball.

They have a Pretty nice (and large) driving range, most of them are fenced & matted, each with their own print out of the ranges to the colored flags. Since the tee stands circle around the range, each flag means different distance depending on where your standing. 6 bucks gets you a basket of balls, (which is more balls than Stone Crest has in their bag for the same price) and they all seem to be the same kind (Titleist range balls). My only gripe is the range itself is next to the main road, which is a state road, also known as the by-pass. So it sees a lot of traffic and makes for a fair bit of noise.

They have a large practice putting green with 8 or 10 holes, each with retrieval poles, so that’s nice. However they do not allow pitching on to it, so they lost a little bit of points for that.

They have electric carts and push carts available to rent

All in all, the par-3 is a nice little course, especially for beginners and those looking to work on their short game.

I give the par-3 a

The 3 courses I have played...

Brook Hill Golf Course in Brookville, IN
This course is very well groomed most of the time and has it's fair share of challenges. However, from the blue tees it is somewhat short. I would give it a 4.

Buck Point Country Club in Liberty, IN
This course is quite new but is very, very challenging. If you are not accurate on this course, it will eat you alive. Well groomed and has a beautiful view over the Brookville Dam. I would give it a 4.

Spring Hills Golf Course in Hanover, IN
This course is very, very new...established only 7 years ago. It has the potential to be very nice, but it just needs to grow up...i.e. the trees need to grow to help shape it. It has great prices and a friendly staff. It also gets a 4.

Place I'd recommend: http://www.swanlakeresort.com/

Went there for a lessons clinic a couple years ago. Stayed onsite, had four 3-hour lesson sessions with 3 other friends. Unlimited range, play, etc. on a couple of major-league 18-hole courses.

Northwest Indiana location.

Awards, Achievements, and Accolades

Played the Coffins track in the spring of last year. Good parkland layout, kind of tight on a few fairways so you can find trouble if you're not careful.

On a scale of 1-5, 5 being the best course for a muni under $50, I'd give it a 4.

I like Heartland Crossing in Camby, about 10 minutes southwest of Indianapolis. The course offers a good challenge, but will reward you for good shots. I've played it about 10 times, and it's always been in great shape.
Favorite holes:
#4 - 320 yard right dogleg par 4. You have 3 options off the tee: a long iron to the dogleg with a full wedge in, a fairway wood carry over two large bunkers leaving a chip to the green, or for the big hitters you can go for the green which is protected by three traps.
#9 - 425 yard par 4. A long drive in the fairway is crucial as this green is heavily protected by sand. The green is very large with plenty of undulation.
#13 - 500 yard par 5. Off the tee, there's trouble on the left with trees, and trouble on the right with heather. Your second shot is uphill, almost blind. Going for the green in two is nearly impossible with the bunkers that surround the green.
#15 - 385 yard par 4. This hole curves right around a lake. A long, straight drive will give you a wedge shot to the green, which is slightly uphill and heavily protected.

I give it a 5.

Otis Park Golf Club

A few days ago, me and my roommate played the back 9 of this course (10-18)

The tee boxes were pretty normal. They have Blue, White and Red boxes that are marked with nice looking stone markers with the Otis Park logo on it with the appropriate colors. They were more or less kept in good shape, considering how much they are played. Most of the boxes give good views of the green, though hole 16 goes over a hill and is impossible to see the green or the flag. Anyone new to the course is advised to scout out the green before teeing off.

Their was a ball washer at nearly every hole, and they have running water faucets every few holes that have cool (not cold) water. The hole information looked like it was torn down, so there were no layouts of the holes at each hole, nor was there one on the score card. The electric carts they have are nice with 2 size cup holders (this is important to us because we usually pick up large Poweraids that don’t fit in standard size cup holders.

The Fairways were kept in relatively good shape and have irrigation. I must grip alittle about them however. As certain spots on the fairways had dead grass or dirt spots, and one had a couple ‘pot holes’.

The greens were in good shape, though areas around the green had dead grass spots where it was obvious that people had pitched from those locations. There were a few water hazards, but most of them we encountered were dried out, leaving rough rocky areas. I hit a good 3wood shot into one and it hit a rock and shot about 40-50 feet up, but landed back in the rocks unfortunately, and I lost it heh.

They had sand traps in pretty good areas where it was likely you’d land a ball, but not so much in the way that you couldn’t avoid them. The sand was in good condition (I point this out because I’m use to playing at stone crest, who had poor sand traps/bunkers)

Hole 17 is gives a very nice view of the fairway from the white/blue tee box, as it sits on the edge of a cliff, to which you hit off of on to the fairway below, which doglegs slightly to the left.

There is tall grass around a few holes, which I found a surprise black snake as it slithered close in front of me, thinking they should proly cut the grass in a few areas to help avoid this.

All and all a good course, one of the better ones I’ve played. Will have to play the front 9 sometime.

I give the back 9 ..

If anyone is in Southeast Indiana, two courses I'd highly recommend are Belterra and Grand Victoria. Both are riverboat casino courses; maybe an hour or so apart. I'm not a riverboat casino guy (nothing like Vegas, baby!) but both courses are outstanding. Between the two I'd say Belterra is definitely better, but Grand Vic is definitely worth the drive to go play. It's a links style course.

I play:

Saddlebrook Golf Course (Indy):

I would consider this my "home" course simply because it's on the way home from my work so I get to play it often. It's a decently maintained housing addition course. It's very affordable and just challenging enough. (3/5, affordable, decent maintenance)

Quail Creek (Pittsboro):

Played a Sunday night league here last summer. This course is not all that challenging but is well maintained. There are a couple really neat holes and some that are rather boring. Decent fun, but a bit too pricy for what they offer. (3/5, nice but overpriced)

White Lick (Brownsburg):

This is a "goat pasture" as some would call it, and I love it to death. It's a few minutes from my house. An easy 9-hole course built on some farmland with a small pond in the middle of the last three holes. The course is wide open and laid back, great place for beginners. The greens are usually soft but the fairways are basically lawn grass. For $7.50 for 9 holes, you can't beat it for a quick round after work. (2/5, not a "premier" course but much fun to be had at a cheap rate)

Cambridge Golf Course

This is one of my favorite courses. Its a links style course. Not too much in the way of trees, but has a lot of elevation changes. It is a tough course, playing over 7200 yards. The greens were are undulating, having lots of break in them. It was a great to be creative on some shots, and knowing where to put the ball. The course was in good condition. The rough wasn't very taxing, unless you put it in the very long stuff. Water came in to play on several holes. The only complaint that I had was that I felt the greens were not in as good of shape as they could have been. This is not to say the green were in bad shape. In fact, there were in good shape. I just wanted them to be a bit faster.

The best part of it was the price. You can walk 18 for under $20 for twilight. Play 18 during the week for $34 with cart.

The final verdict: (4) Good

Central Indy Here

Prestwick Country Club (Avon) (My Home Course) 5/5
Its private, but if you can get it via a buddy with a guest fee, it is an absolute blast to play. The course is kept wonderfully, the staff there is very friendly. And has some very challenging holes.
Favorite Holes

#8 150 yard par 3 over 2 areas of water with a peninsula between them. Around the green is very sloped on the right side which can lead to even more water hazards. A great hole.

#10 A very unique par 4. Your 2nd shot is over a giant cliff and is completely blind.

#13 Long and curvy par 4. My personal favorite hole for unknown reasons

Eagle Pines (Mooresville) 4/5

Great well kept public course, Only played once, but it was pleasant.

Oak Tree (Plainfield) 2/5

Garbage course, can't tell the fairway from the rough... kept VERY poorly. Very little sand in bunkers, so little its hard to get them out. Tons of giant mounds. No unique holes.... all par 5s are identical. Would NOT reccomend.

Deer Creek (Indy) 4/5

Great course, Only played once so I can't provide much detail.

Played Wildcat Creek a week ago in Kokomo, very nice links style course, well maintained. I found a course in Fishers over the weekend that I want to try out, it's Ironwood. Any one ever play it? I saw on the site it's 3 nine hole course's. The one thing I was impressed with was a par 3 that I passed on the main road to the clubhouse was kind of like 17 at Sawgrass with a complete carry of water to a green sticking out on a point on the other side of the pond.

I've also played Wildcat, nice course winding through a housing development and discounts can be found. Also, the American Legion course in Kokomo, some tricky holes with surprising big changes in elevation. I like them both and try to play them when I'm in town.

Great thread!

White Lick (Brownsburg):

Is that not the one that closed? I lived in Brownsburg for a few years, and my first ever round was on whatever course it is that is visible from I-74. You enter off of some County Road onto a gravel parking lot. The last time I drove by on 74 I thought I saw a For Sale sign and the grass was out of control.

You're thinking of Clermont Golf Course. They closed it down after the 2007 season if I'm not mistaken. If I remember correctly, they sold it to a hotel developer but the paperwork was never finalized so now it just sits.

White Lick is on IN-267 about 4 miles North of I-74.

Perhaps I can revive this thread.

I have played golf all over Indiana and a lot in Indianapolis.

My favorite courses would have to go in the following order, and having the following rating.

Victoria National (5+) - It's not even close, this is the nicest unknown course in the area. Impeccably maintained, but very challenging.

Bear Slide (5) - Great course in Cicero. Not too well known, so only good golfers here mostly. Specials can be had on golfnow.com for $37, a steal. Greens are not as fast as they used to be this year, sadly.

Prairie View (4) - Great course, but pretty pricey, I only play there for the $55 twilight.
Purgatory (4) - Challenging but fun course, but can also be pricey.
Crooked Stick (4) - Great course, sneaky in how strategic most holes are. Only a true golfer will appreciate the subtle challenges Pete Dye put in. This course is famous more so for its members than the course though.
The Fort (4) - Beautiful golf course, but attracts some hackers, so can be a slow round.

Ironwood (3.5) - Great golf course for a good rate. Never terribly crowded. The 6th and 7th on the lakes nine are two of the prettiest holes in Indianapolis.

I have played just about every course around Indy, so if someone has a question, I'd be happy to answer them.

    • It's been a little more than a year since I can last remember hitting golf balls and today I just got my second cortisone injection in 11 months. I thought maybe shortly after the first injection I was going to be able to start playing again with therapy but the pain while doing my backswing past halfway just didn't subside like just lifting my hands up in the air did. So today the Orthopedic surgeon put more in the backside of the shoulder than before to address the tendon more. I'm going to try therapy for another 3 months and if I  can't swing the club without pain then I think surgery is going to be my next option.

I hit my ball into the deep rough near some tree's and my cousin's husband offered me his Sim 2 Rescue Hybrid to try out. And I felt the same way, wow! I loved it, it also had a Pure DTX grip on it which I loved. As soon as I got back home, I ended up buying two used Calloway Rogue X hybrids, 3 and 5. So far I've only tested them out at the range, but I love them. They're much more forgiving than irons for me.
