I live in southeast Michigan and have been to other events at Oakland Hills, but have never played the course. I'm not a member there, so shy of hoping that I one day befriend a member and can come on as a guest or becoming a member myself. How might I go about this???

there's probably a lot of widowed old cougars that are members there. you can sell your body to them for a round of golf. win/win situation.

There was an article in one of the golf magazines a couple of years ago on this. Basically go during the offseason, dress nice (don't wear your golf shoes in the Pro-Shop) and ask if it's possible to play the course. If they are ok with it, pay in cash, don't use the members only facilities, and be extra nice to the course. No guarantees though as some will say no. I have tons of Munis that I have yet to hit but one of these days I'm going to try it on one of the closer private courses that I think I might have a chance of getting on.

If you are member of a semi-private or private club many times you can work with your Director of Golf, PRO, or General Manager to help arrange a tee time. If there is a reciprocal arrangement the round can be paid for through your club.

If not... refer back to N.V.M.'s advice! There's got to be a win/win in there somewhere.

Oakland Hills is one of the true blue blood type of courses and you'll need a ton of connections and maybe more than one night with a cougar to get on there. You will more than likely have to play with a member and have a pretty well connected pro hook you up. I doubt they are a reciprocal club unless your club is in the top 100 courses and of similar stature and you'll still need to play with a member to play there.

Better get out the dirk digler outfit as a backup...

Make an appointment, dress nice, and tell them you are considering a membership but would like to play the course first. Most clubs are happy to let you play for the guest rate if you are pondering a membership. Just don't expect to play for free.

A few of my friend belong to the Country Club of Detroit (you probably know it) and they have a guest rate of $105. Like mruseless said, I'm sure Oakland Hills has something similar.

I've considered just calling and asking, then again I've considered using my friends idea and one of the above mentioned ideas of claiming to be interested in a membership.

get about 4-5 black suburbans with tinted windows and fill em up with as many big n buff people as possible and when you get out have them surround you and just pretend you're a celebrity. oh...get some of your friends to get cameras and pretend they're paparazzi. no course will deny the thought of that kind of free exposure. lol

this NEVER hurts...But more times than not, the more prestigious CC's like Oakland Hills, Baltusrol, Winged Foot, Upper Montclair, shoot even Augusta

are a member-referral only. I'd say just call and ask about joining. If they say it's a member-sponsor type of initiation, then try to find out who's a member and befriend them/offer them something that they need in return (i usually tell them I'll DJ one of their events pro-bono). Other than that, find out who caddies. Play your muni courses and start talking to the teenagers/younger twenty-somethings. If they caddy, tell them that you'd be interested in joining, but want to play the course. Hit them off with some $, cigars or something so they can bring you on as a guest during caddy day (for some reason it's mostly monday's in NJ) Also, there's a lot of services that you pay yearly membership dues. It's a service that arranges for you to play at private courses around the country. It's a few hundred bucks a year plus they make a % on booking your tee time. Also at the range, a lot of the instructors have hook ups.

Sometimes members of private clubs will donate rounds to charity or a similar fund raising function. IIRC correctly, someone had donated Oakland Hill rounds at a Detroit Country Day fundraiser but that was 10 years ago when my son attended DCD. And it could have been for the North Course, not the South. But keeping an eye for something like that would be an option.
