So I'm playing in the Nevada State Mid-Amateur down in Vegas this weekend. The pairings were just posted today...and I'm paired with...get ready for it...

Evel Knievel's oldest son Kelly.

Cool!

He plays to a 0.2 handicap, so it should be a good match. I will be sure to try to stop playing poker long enough to let you know how I'm doing

You should dare him to go for it on every shot... or dare him to jump over a wide creek or something just to rattle him.

While I agree that some Americans may have difficulty distinguishing the difference between irony and coincidence ( and that, of course may be true for those from other countries, as well [ ignorance knows no national borders ] )and I agree that the original post has nothing to do with coincidence, what has it to do with irony?

General misunderstanding of the word...

And IME it seems the lack of irony/coincidence distinction is isolated to the US. I've spent time with many Australians, Canadians and Brits and the misuse of the word has never come up.

the words ironic & coincidence wouldn't be used as per the description of the events that will transpire.
It would be more like, Craziest Pairing Ever. or spin a pun with the world Evil.

Irony - a usually humorous or sardonic literary style or form characterized by irony
Coincidence - the occurrence of events that happen at the same time by accident but seem to have some connection; also : any of these occurrences

so it would be a coincidence if you were paired up with a family member, friend, etc. It would be ironic if someone who you normally beat lays a whipping on you.

And please don't generalize by saying "Americans"

I played golf with two good friends that went to college together back east but have not seen or kept in contact over the years and they went there separate ways. In San Francisco at Lincoln Golf Course a golfer's in their group was late for a tee time and delayed their starting time, when they were on the fairway, someone hit an errand ball into their fairway and it turns out to be the old friend from college and thats how they met up again after years away from college and of course they were now golf partners, so talk about timming, the errand shot at the right time and because the group was delayed created the right moment for the buddies to meet again.

I'm curious to know if Kelly measures his distances in yards or bus widths?
And be careful how you use the word "break" on the putting greens.....he may be a little sensitive to that.

You can talk to a slice, but a hook doesn't listen.

While my tee shot was in the air with a hook it suddenly changed in direction. Coincidently a tee shot from the first tee struck my golf ball in mid-air. Ironically both balls were the same brand and number. I have marked my ball ever since.

      No, they will collect the "Stay & Play" cost at the Virtues on Sunday. I was a little surprised by that, I would collect on Saturday, but I guess the person doing the reservations & bills is located at the Virtues.  I think we can trust that none of us are going to run out on the bill and leave us in a lurch.

      They're playing 16 games in each match though. Don't need much of an advantage before that number of players significantly loads things in their favor. The other team has to win 8.5 games to beat them. At a 65/35 split, that's a lot and pretty unlikely (about 10% of the time).

      Why does the second sentence have to be true? If they're used to playing a tough course that's improperly rated, they're going to both have inflated indexes and have higher skills relative to them. If their home course features a variety of different challenges, I don't see why their game wouldn't travel well. And on the flip side, some courses and their members take pride in how hard their course is and how tough it's rated, and that bit of vanity ends up hurting them in these kinds of competitions.

      I discussed it today but can call back and re-confirm.  I would love to be wrong on that point. Note: That may have been before they changed the hotel due to lack of room at Hampton Inn. Update on Friday Hotel: If I can give a count to EagleSticks they can get us a discount on Friday night at the hotel.  I do not have the $$ but should be much lower than the $249 the hotel quoted me. I do not have my list with me for the Friday hotels but if you want one, please post ASAP and I will get the rate and get them held. Thanks @billchao for catching this.
