So basically over the last few weeks I've been hitting the ball very well. I have a pretty "normal" swing. The only thing weird is that I grip the club with my right hand, almost on the bottom side of the club. Today when I took my lesson he moved that hand to the normal postison on top of the club. To me this makes the club face feel wide open. I guess my wrists end up cupped sometimes to, so with the new grip a miss hit is a bad bad slice, almost more of a sideways shot. With my current grip, a miss is usually a big draw. Should I change grips and work hard for the next 10-15 days before my golf season, or leave it alone?

Change it. Do whatever the guy says at the lessons. Your wasting your time and money if you won't change it.

I went through a grip change as well man, it's real tough for the first three weeks. Then once you get used to it really helps your game!

Exactly though, 3 weeks from now my season will have started, we'll have played two matches. I Don't know if it's worth risking giving up my slot on the team because I'm working this out now.

In 3 weeks, the negative impact of your mishits will have been mitigated... and likely better than they are currently.

I think you'd be surprised how quickly these "big" changes are integrated. You're likely to find middle ground if not a superior swing.

I threw my clubs into the lake so it's time to start over...

Spend some time at the range and change it now. In the end you will benefit. If you work at it the range you may be able to adapt in just a few days.

I too used to have a very strong grip. One day I just accepted the fact that my game was not going to improve unless I fixed that. I'm a huge believer in the fundamentals and it all starts at the grip. Having a grip that strong will not allow you to work the ball (which may not be a big deal for you) and will actually prevent you from making solid, consistent, contact. This really affects your control as well.

Chances are that this is something else in your swing that you're doing incorrectly to compensate for your strong grip that is resulting in the type of "mishits" that you are experiencing. You may "discover" this on your own while you work with your new grip, or you may need the help of a coach. If you don't have a coach to work with (and you can't take another lesson for one reason or another), check out How To Master a Great Golf swing . This is a book with a very deep focus on the fundamentals of golf and it even includes a nice cause/effect section at the end (well, at least the first edition did).

Work with this grip over the next few weeks. It will pay major dividends in the end and you'll find that your game will improve tremendously. Chances are, you'll even learn to work the ball once you get comfortable.

Oh, can you tell that switching to a neutral grip helped my game big time? After a few weeks with the new grip I started to hit more fairways which resulted in hitting more greens which resulted in lower scores. Step two, for me anyway, was to change from an interlocking grip to an overlap. This change gave me a bit more feel and control... That may, or may not, apply to you as well.

My was a very very significant change. I'm not sure how much of a change your's is..it may take to a few times at the range to get comfortable, or maybe a month. I'd still say go with the new one.

Do you play in high school?

How competitive can you become with your grip? If you change your grip as your pro suggested will it take you to the next level of your golf game? Tell your coach what change you made with your grip and show him how hard you worked on the changed grip.

If Tiger woods can overhaul his swing completely and come back more consistent I think you can give it a shot also.

I would try the change. I note that you are an 18+ handicap. I imagine that you will get comfortable with this grip fairly quickly, but you should certainly get to the range as often as possible before your season starts.
If you don't see improvement by the time your season starts, there is always the option of switching back to your old grip. You are taking lessons so I would try to follow the pro's advice, but not every golfer is the same. A unique grip doesn't mean it's wrong.

With your current grip, it's going to be hard to get very good. It might work for you right now, but overall, if you want to truly get better, you need a more conventional grip.

I tried to slowly convert the grip today, on the course... It actually went okay. No slices, just hit a few thin. The grip isn't quite where he wanted it, its sort of in the middle, but it's much more conventional then it was.
